In the crowd

Driving 32 miles back and forth from work each day gives me lots of time to think...

And so I was thinking about all the bands I've seen in concert during my lifetime. And I'm curious to hear some of the responses from this group, given the diversity of the people here.

So, here's my list:

Depeche Mode (twice)
Ministry
Smashing Pumpkins
The Reverend Horton Heat (eight times)
Barry Manilow (twice)
Tony Bennett
Aretha Franklin
Tom Jones
St. Louis Symphony Orchestra (twice)
Stabbing Westward
Poe
Atari Teenage Riot
Grant Lee Buffalo
The Cows
The Mimis
Reacharound
Face to Face
The Nixons
Toadies
Hank Williams III
Dancehall Crashers
The Amazing Crowns
Mighty Mighty Bosstones
H20
Pietasters
Pearl Jam
The Flaming Lips
Stone Temple Pilots
Butthole Surfers (twice)
The Urge
Fragile Porcelain Mice
Rage Against the Machine
Babes in Toyland
Tool
A Lighter Shade of Brown
Front 242
Dinosaur Jr.
Arrested Development
Alice in Chains
Primus
Fishbone
Ozomatli
Jazzfatnastees
Collective Soul
Sarah McLachlan
The Chieftains
Ron Sexsmith

There are some other ones I've seen that were openers for the Reverend Horton Heat...but I don't remember...probably b/c I was drunk.

Oh, and there was the band I fronted by the name of Sycamore. ;)

Undertoad 08-05-2001 12:56 AM

Barry Manilow (twice)

Lessee, you're not a woman so... what IS your excuse?

Tom Jones

The thing about Tom Jones is that he's one of the coolest guys that's ever lived, and remains cool to today. He goes on talk shows, it's like this aura of cool comes in, out-cools everyone around him, and shimmers out with him when he leaves.

Fishbone

That MUST have been nuts!

My list is just as "late 80s" as yours is "late 90s".

Three Dog Night (I was 9)
Asia (twice) (no excuse)
The Cars
Chris DeBurgh ("Don't Pay the Ferryman")
Yes
Yo La Tengo
Devo
China Crisis
Innocence Mission (15 times)
Chris Isaak (twice) (only man cooler than T. Jones)
Dire Straits
A Flock of Seagulls
Modern English
Earthworks featuring Bill Bruford
Book of Love
Squeeze
Rush
The Church (four times)
Lloyd Cole (twice)
Jill Sobule
REM
Bryan Ferry
Simple Minds
Shriekback
BoDeans (twice)
Thomas Dolby
The The
Robyn Hitchcock
Adrian Belew (twice)
The dBs
Let's Active
Don Dixon and Marti Jones
Julian Cope
The Mighty Lemon Drops
The Smithereens
Jerry Harrison
10,000 Maniacs
They Might Be Giants

I cut my teeth on mid-to-late 70s pop, as that's what my mom listened to--Elton John, the Carpenters, Barry Manilow, Neil Diamond, etc.
As a child, I loved Barry Manilow. It was the first show I ever saw--March 30, 1981. Granted, I moved away from that in my teenage years. However, having grown up a bit, I can say that Barry Manilow is one of the greatest pop songsters that there is. Not to mention, his ventures into new sounds (such as jazz and swing) have been great. I don't feel so ashamed now...*sniff*. ;)

He played at Fair St. Louis in 1995. My mom had been one of those crazy thirty-somethings that was throwing her panties at the guy in concert. I wasn't sure what to expect, given that this was a free show, but I was blown away. He roared through covers of "Hard to Handle" and "Are You Gonna Go My Way?" and I was amazed. This was around the time of his comeback pop album...and those songs were great as well. I was highly impressed. Not to mention, the movies he's been in (Mars Attacks!, Jerky Boys)...he just has that swagger. How could you NOT dig the guy?

Quote:

That MUST have been nuts! (Fishbone)
It was--Lollapalooza '93. The mosh pit was fierce, but they put on a hell of a show! Angelo Moore is a true frontman...he's just insane.

Interesting side note--a friend of mine went to see them when they were doing a tour with Biohazard in early 1994. The show was apparently phenomenal...and my friend still suffers from permanent hearing damage due to that show.

Quote:

Actually, more like mid-90s...most of those shows I saw from 1993-96. Although it's funny...the shows I've seen in the past 3 years have probably been the best ones I've seen. Ministry (St. Louis, 1999) was 7 years waiting. Depeche Mode (Chicago, 1998) was 4 years waiting. And Ozomatli (St. Louis, 1999) was the most fun I have ever had at a show.

That's a great list though...it would make my gf jealous...she's a huge 80s nut. I can remember watching "120 Minutes" in the late 80s as a pre-teen and wondering two things: "What the f**k is this?!" and "Wow! Why isn't this on the radio?"

alphageek31337 08-05-2001 03:05 AM

I think I've got a pretty impressive list considering I'm 16

Mighty Might Bosstones
Fuel
Deftones
Warrant
Poison
Quiet Riot
Live
BuckCherry
The Berlin Project
AFN
Slick Olde Bishops
Distorted Penguin
Barenaked Ladies
The Flys
Dave Matthews Band (upwards of 6 times)
Mest
New Found Glory
Blink 182
Fat Tony
Body Jar
Stone temple Pilots
Orgy
Liars Inc (These guys are fuckin' great, whatever happened to them?)
Sleeping Giants (If you're ever in the Plum Borough area, go to a place called John Anthony's; Their ex-guitarist plays there, and he is the best in the tri-county area, three years running)
The Clarks
The Gathering Field
Green Day
Agnostic Front (there aren't words....)
The Offspring
Lenny Kravitz

Plus countless other local bands, cover bands, and little club shows I don't remember.

And syc, you're definitely right about angelo....those guys are on par with Dave Matthews and the Dead as jam bands, and he's definitely the coolest frontman since Lemmy.

jaguar 08-05-2001 04:31 AM

Damnit you americans are frigging lucky - we get buggar all bands down here i swear - only gone to big day out which gets a few big names and a 'gurge concert, oh wait, and a snog one, and an augie march one......ok not *as* bad
the last two a small melbourne bands that me and my friends think rock, i cna link to a few mp3s if you want. Snog is an anti-corperate band but tehy do all sorts of inductral techno/lyirics stuff its imporrible to explainbut fantastic to lsiten to
my fav quote "hey christian god, get outa my face, your ugly ghost is a curse on the human race"

But i do go to alot of clubbing events..

mbpark 08-05-2001 03:36 PM

I've seen a few...not too many though...

Here's my list:

Moby
Primus (2x)
Ween
Goo Goo Dolls (they're not too cool)
Barenaked Ladies
Josh Wink
A large amount of hardcore bands...most names I cannot remember
Guns 'N Roses (Vegas this year)

Soon to see this summer/fall:
Tool
Fantomas
Deftones
Slash's Snakepit

Hubris Boy 08-05-2001 04:24 PM

Top Ten List:

The Rolling Stones (twice)
B.B. King (4 times)
The Grateful Dead (14 times)
George Thorogood and the Destroyers (3 times. I like George, even if he did drop "Delaware" from the name.)
Sarah McLachlan (Birthday present for someone else)
Van Halen (My first concert. 1980)
Chris LeDoux and the Saddle Boogie Band (4 times)
Duran Duran
Dar Williams
The Talking Heads (twice)

elSicomoro 08-05-2001 09:19 PM

The Ones That Got Away

Unfortunately, two bands that I always wanted to see (Nirvana and Soundgarden) I will never get to see...unless Soundgarden decides to reform, which seems unlikely at this point. Talking Heads would have been a good one too...and a reunion of those 4 seems extremely unlikely as well.

I would have liked to have seen Area: One, particularly for Moby and Outkast. I hope it is able to pick up where Lollapalooza went wrong.

I would love to see Pantera, but I have crowd concerns over that one.

I can't think of any other shows I'd like to see in the future at this point, but if Dave rejoins Van Halen, I am SO there!

vsp 08-06-2001 12:58 AM

Okay, given how rarely I attend concerts AND that most of these were either to chaperone/join someone else or when I was a kid, I'm about to seriously embarrass myself.

But here goes anyway:

Kenny Rogers, at least twice
(I forget how many times I saw him when I was in single-digit years, attending with my father.)
Debbie Gibson
(Someone had to chaperone my younger sister. I'll give her this, I hated the music but she was quite the entertainer in her day.)
Bricklin
(West Chester University, where I saw a lot more comedians than bands over the years.)
Beru Ha Ha
(Alibi's, in West Chester, which is called something else now. I was too young for Beru Revue.)
Moody Blues
(My dad's birthday present one year.)
Dead Milkmen (solo), a couple of times
Mojo Nixon (solo), at least twice
Dead Milkmen/Mojo Nixon/Cavedogs triple bill
King Missile
(All four in Raleigh, NC, in my college years. Nothing quite like watching Mojo's keyboard player simulating sodomy with an inflatable sheep.)
Stephen Lynch
(In Williamsport, at a local college up there. Great guitar-playing comedian.)
John "Dr. Dirty" Valby, four times
(Once at the 23 East, once at the Big Kahuna in Wilmington, twice upstate, and why can't anyone book this bastard closer to Philly?)

And that's all I can think of, off the top of my head. Pity me.

vsp 08-06-2001 01:04 AM

Okay, I _almost_ got to see Fishbone.

The Wolfstock festival at NC State had Fishbone as the featured band one year. I couldn't attend for some personal reasons (as that was the ONLY year they had bands that were in the least bit appealing), though I did get roped into trying to interview Dirty Looks for the college paper (the hairy freaks blew me off).

I didn't miss much, though. Fishbone blew onto stage with "Freddy's Dead," the mosh pit started, and the campus security immediately stopped the concert and sent everyone home because they felt that the pit endangered the safety of the crowd.

Oh, yeah, add: New Potato Caboose, in Raleigh. Great name, ehhh band.

Also saw a talented MD band called Last Picture Show on the boardwalk of Ocean City, Maryland once, come to think of it. They were right there on the side of the boardwalk and blowing the crowd away. Good stuff.

elSicomoro 08-06-2001 08:47 PM

A few I forgot

I happened to write all these down while I was at work Saturday...and found my original list. I forgot about:

Buju Banton
Wailing Souls
The Romantics
St. Stephen's Blues
Celtic Connection

Now in the neighborhood of people I could have seen, but either didn't have the money, or was too lazy to go:

--Chuck Berry (still performs once a month in St. Louis)
--Wayne Newton
--Tony Orlando
--Roy Clark
--Andy Williams
(these 4 have theatres in Branson, MO and perform regularly, except for Clark who recently retired)
--Buddy Guy (was at his club in Chicago on a couple of occasions I was in Chicago)

And to add to the list of people I'd like to see:

Prince
B.B. King
Herbie Hancock
Clark Terry

alphageek31337 08-07-2001 02:30 AM

Syc

You *need* to see buddy guy. If you're too lazy/broke, fire yourself up with a cup of coffee and sell your kidney. If you appreciate good music (especially if you appreciate good guitar) this man will make your head explode. I've only seen videos, and they were incredible.

jaguar 08-07-2001 05:11 AM

Blodoy hell i feel very left out *laughz
Anyone else here a clubber?

elSicomoro 08-07-2001 08:18 PM

Sorry Jag...I was only a semi-clubber in my heyday. I haven't been to a rave since 1993...and that was before it was cool...and before X was overly popular here in the States. I haven't been to a club in about 3 years. Well, actually, I DID see the Reverend at the 930 Club in Washington, which is actually a real club, although not one with pulsing lights, mind-numbing techno, and glowsticks. ;)

Sometimes, I think about it...and I wouldn't mind going to a club again...but then I think about the ones here in Philadelphia (and these are supposedly some of the best in the country...and I'm sure they are), and all I think about is the "meat market."

My fiance on the other hand is a self-professed club whore, although this is about 10 years removed now. She hung out at all the clubs in Baltimore and Washington in the late 80s and early 90s, particularly Tracks in DC and the Hippo in Baltimore.

Kris 08-07-2001 10:12 PM

Billy Joel (x2)
Pink Floyd [Dave Gilmour version] (x2)
Roger Waters (x4)
Dave Matthews (x2)
Alman Bro's
Aerosmith (x2)
Fuel
3 Doors Down
Oleander
The Wallflowers
Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band (x5)
Double Trouble
Metallica
R.E.M.
Collective Soul
Bare Jr. (won the tickets on WMMR)
Creed (x2)
Rage Against the Machine
KoRN
Page and Plant (x2)
Robert Plant (solo)
Days of the New (x2)
311 (x2)
Santana
BB-King
Ozzfest (x3?... )

I also have another Aerosmith show coming up in September...

Undertoad 08-07-2001 10:45 PM

Actually most of mine came from Philly clubs that would bring in national acts, so those shows included Devo, Thomas Dolby, and TMBG all at the Chestnut Cabaret (R.I.P.).

Kris, I woulda loved to see Plant solo during the 80s when he was putting out all those really cool semi-experimental things. As long as Phil Collins didn't drum for him.

Kris 08-07-2001 11:12 PM

He seemed to still be doing a lot of experimental stuff. I had taken my dad for his birthday, and he knew more of the music (almost the whole show was cover's from the 60's & 70's). He played a few Zepp tunes, as well as a rendition of "Hey Joe" that I didn't recognize until I heard those words.

The best show I've been to by far was Kenny Wayne Shepherd with Double Trouble. $25 bucks and they played for 4 solid hours.

Bah, generation difference i think. Clubs aren't jstu meat markets any mroe, you go with freinds for a good time - sure you might pick up and plenty of *ahem* stuff happens but thats not relaly why you go. Most are there for the music and the atnosphere which is of course often enhanced by little pills.....Haven't been to many full on raves - most are 18+ only but i go to an event called earthcore when its on 1-5 day raves held in natural locaiton - often natural parks with minimal enviroment impact.

Ah ... how it warms the cockles of my heart to see that someone recalls Beru Revue and Beru Ha Ha. (I, however, am not too young to remember Beru Revue ... and consumed rather a lot of Heineken over those years ... and dancing onstage to "Women Can Fly" and hula-ing to "Moving to Hawaii ..." Oh thank you vsp for bringing back Many Many happy memories for me!!! (I was officially a groupie ... and only recently gave up my "BRU RVU" vanity plate to replace it with "SLVR WF" I was splitting my groupie time between Beru Revue and The Flamin' Caucasians ... who I still get out to see from time to time.

And I also appreciate the musical stylings of Dr. John Valby ... who I saw at West Chester State College (yes, that long ago) for a "Totally Tasteless Evening". I have a signed copy of his album "Concerto for Piano and 499 Screaming Assholes"

Oh, and who else have I seen?

The Hooters (before the national album, back when they were good)
Steeleye Span
Renaissance
The Heartbeats
Tommy Conwell and the Young Rumblers
Twisted Sister (yes, I admit it)
Dokken
Cinderella (2x)
David Lee Roth
Peter Gabriel (2x)
Laurie Anderson
Cheap Trick
REO Speedwagon (3x)
Bon Jovi
Roger Waters
The Moody Blues
Radio Rodeo (another defunct philly band ...)
Johnny's Dance Band
Brittny Fox
Crystal Ship (a Doors cover band, when people first started doing that stuff ... they showed up several hours late at WCU, just in time to prevent the riot)
Jane Sibbery (who I really ended up liking, but she had the misfortune of playing at the Chestnut Cabaret on the same night as a Beru Revue Farewell (to Buzz Barkley) show, so the crowd was just not at all interested in her and heckled her pretty incessantly)
The Monkees
Chuck Mangione
Benny Goodman
Harry Chapin
Sha Na Na
Helen Reddy
(I used to live down the street from Temple University Music Fair and went there nearly every night during the season)

Whoops ... almost forgot that I went to the Lilith Fair one time, so I saw
Sarah MacLachlan
Missy Elliot
That chick who used to be with 10,000 Maniacs ... you know, what's her name ... Natalie Merchant
and a bunch of other people I just don't remember ... maybe the Indigo Girls?
(and no, I wasn't really invested in seeing the lilith fair, but I knew someone who had really wanted to go, bought 4 tickets and strong-armed 4 friends into going. I was soooo out of the demographic it wasn't funny ... (okay, the male friend that went with was more out of the demo, but as a straight, white later 30something female, I was a bit out of my depth ...)

Oh gods, I know there are so many more, but the years and dead brain cells (and the fact that I am at work and trying to rush typing this are not helping right now)

Seriously, I like glowsticks. I like mind-numbing techno (Underworld is probably my favorite). Pulsing lights make me ill though.

Raves like that have been going on here for years, particularly out in the deserts of the Southwest. But clubs have been meat markets for years in the States...and probably will be for some time. Of course, it depends on the club. I used to hang out at a few jazz dives in St. Louis...now those were sweet!

Knew I Forgot at Least One ...

And of course, its the most surreal experience of the bunch ...

Ladysmith Black Mambazo

What's surreal about that do you ask?

Where I saw them.

Norristown State Hospital.

No Really!!!!

Building #33 (The community center)

It was a benefit concert for the Noyes Foundation for Schizophrenia Research ... I know the program director of the research unit at NSH and he "hooked me up" ... I got to hang out after the show and meet the performers. It was WONDERFUL.

jaguar 08-10-2001 02:15 AM

It *so* does rely on the club, some clubs here are pure meat markets (and this is underage!) but alot of good ones aren't! GOd i lvoe jazz clubs - havne't had a chance to go for *ages* somthig i've got to drag a few people to one of these weekends =)
Big jazz fan.

thx3232 08-16-2001 03:09 PM

The idea of 'how many bands' is sort of a cool idea. I've never really sat down and tried to list them. The following list dosen't include a lot of crap I have forgotten. At least half of the shows I have been going to for the past 10 years are 'All Ages Shows'. For the most part they are bands that are young and don't last long, so they won't be in the list...

Fugazi X 3
God Speed You Black Emperor
Kid Koala
Blaster the Rocket Boy
Masada (John Zorn project)
Medeski Martin and Wood
Butthole Sufers
Roadside Monument
Icarus Line
Havalina Rail Company
Stereolab
Blur (yuck)
Radiohead (in a small bar no less)
the Evaporators
Pavement X 2
Sebadoh
Kronos Quartet
Zony Mash
Orange Symphonette
Hepcat
Slackers
MXPX
DOA
Citizen Fish
Subhumans (Vancouver, not UK)
NoMeansNo
Morrissey
Melvins
Dillenger Escape Plan
All State Champion
Neil Young
Pedro the Lion many times
90 pound wuss
Ween
Murder City Devils
Motley Crew
AC DC
Bob Log 111
the Immortal Lee County Killers
Modest Mouse
Fire Hose
Primus
Rush
Red Hot Chili Peppers
thee Pirates (how could I forget)
the Need
Rancid
Black Heart Procession
Death Cab For Cutie
Dameian Jurado
Mecca Normal
DRI
Kataclysm
Me, Mom, and Morgentaler

I seem to be digging now, so I'd best stop.
These kinds of lists suck cause I know that as soon as I hit 'Post' I will remember some band that's like, damm, how could I forget them. Oh well.
But all I want to see is www.mchawking.com. Oh cruel world, why doesn't he tour more?

Undertoad 08-16-2001 04:32 PM

Didn't like Blur? Was it the band that sucked, or just the show?

thx3232 08-16-2001 08:05 PM

Brit Pop

No, I'm not a big brit pop fan. So I would say it's the band. They were opening for Stereolab.

elSicomoro 08-16-2001 10:02 PM

Blur seems like one of those bands that is great in the studio, but would suck live. I dunno...I love their last album ("13"), but I can't imagine them doing it live. I guess I would have to see it. Radiohead makes a fantastic album, and the times I've seen concert footage of them, they pull it off so well.

They were OPENING for Stereolab? Wow...that must have been what? Early-to-mid 90s?

thx3232 08-17-2001 07:26 PM

mmmm...

.../94-/95 I think.

Griff 08-22-2001 02:06 PM

Whatever happened to Tommy Conwell? I saw him a couple times and he really could put on a show.

I was wasting a lot of time trying to come up with all the bands I've seen, so I thought why not bend the idea a little...

Who were the best acts you ever saw?

I saw the Neville Brothers during their Live from Planet Earth tour, that was the single best show I ever saw great rhythmns, great message.

I recently saw the David Grisman Quintet. He plays a really accessable style of mandolin driven jazz called Dawg that draws a lot from bluegrass something like you'd get from Bela Fleck, only a little more rootsy. (Y'all might have heard him when he played some with Jerry Garcia)

Paul Simon Rhythm of the Saints Tour, just fantastic, little bit for everyone there probably the widest age differential I ever saw at a concert.

All three were outdoor venues which in my old age ;) is the only way to see a concert.

Its funny what jag was saying about the Aussie music scene, when I was his age Australia was where all the bands came from...

Griff 08-22-2001 02:18 PM

Dagnabit (no longer a copyright infringement?)

Dulp! I couldn't even do that right, I forgot John Lee Hooker saw him in a little theatre with a Dr. Funkenstein, whole different kinda show...

alphageek31337 08-22-2001 11:18 PM

Griff: You're right about all the bands coming form australia. Especially if you're like me and really into the punk scene; every two days I hear another excellent punk or ska band coming out of australia, and the scene seems so alive down there (from the two or three exchange students and online aussies I've talked to).

jaguar 08-23-2001 02:30 AM

=) We still have/produce alot of great bands, tryng to think of ones that have gone to america recently
killing heidi
savage garden
greenday
snog
ummmmmmmmm i don't know most mainstream music anymore well enough to know where bands coem from so =(

Yea there is a growing and already large punk/ska scene here - i like quite alot of ska.

Griff 08-23-2001 07:38 AM

The wife just picked up an album called Hayseed Dixie. Its a blue grass band playing... just say the name outloud in a rural american accent. Its amusing in small doses and was apparently done dirt cheap.

I have no idea what punk has evolved into since the eig..ah lets just say its been awhile, who epitomizes the sound?

kaleidoscopic ziggurat 08-23-2001 12:05 PM

to contrast your long lists, here is a detailed breakdown of all the concerts i've ever been to in my entire life:

concrete blonde on their last tour
...

and that's all folks, unless you count juno reactor, which was absolutely amazing. drum machine, synths, computer, a guitar, and 5 crazy african guys all poundin out the sickest rhythms on their drums, with much in the way of theatrical performance to spice things up.

^,^^

A child of the 00s followed by a fellow child of the 80s. You know we haven't heard from any children of the 70s yet. And from all these best-of complations ads on late-night cable TV, there must be a lot out there. Come on, who's seen Guess Who, America, Kansas, Foreigner, Boston, as well as the "Behind the Music" shite coming from Styx, Journey, etc.? Or is it bad enough just to be able to make a list of those bands?

I for one will admit to having just "re-bought" a Pat Travers CD recently in a moment of reminiscing.

You can't take away from those bands though...the true pinnacle of "arena rock."

I watched the one on REO Speedwagon a few weeks ago, particularly due to their semi-St. Louis connection. It wasn't that bad actually...

Parabolate 09-25-2001 02:39 AM

We get quite a few bands in Australia, but the problem is that they don't come here often enough. I've been to a few festivals and a few concerts. Most of the bands I've seen are at festivals.
Here's the list: I've divided them into festivals and concerts. There are some bands I've seen at both, though, and they're just listed under concerts.

FESTIVALS:
Marilyn Manson (pretty cool)
Hole (kind of crap)
Red Hot Chilli Peppers (cool show, crap sound quality)
Nine Inch Nails (mindblowing)
Soulfly (Damn good)
Queens of the Stone Age (not bad)
Foo Fighters (pretty cool)
Killing Heidi (good, but not great)
Blondie (Good. Really good)
Violent Femmes (arrogant pricks. Not bad musicians, though)
Tea Party (mindblowing)
Mudhoney (kind of cool)
Rammstein (awesome)
Deftones (mindblowing. I didn't really know their stuff well then, and I HAVE TO see them again)
Pennywise (okay, I guess. I waited ALL DAY at the FRONT of the mosh pit for the Deftones, but they changed it at the last minute and put Pennywise on first, and I screwed my neck when a crowd surfer landed on my head. I had to get out of the mosh so I was at the back when the 'Tones came on. Warped festival sucks)
Suicidal Tendancies (crap)
Korn (okay, but boring)
Blink 182 (unbelievably crap. but what do you expect?)

CONCERTS
Tool (beyond mindblowing. amazing. an experience to never forget)
Faith No More (absolutely awesome)
Sepultura (pretty cool)
Slipknot (okay, but too over aggressive. It gets really annoying after a while.)
Powderfinger (damn good band. good live show, too, but nothing super-special)
Metallica (pretty good. better than expected considering it was on the Reload tour)
Smashing Pumpkins (reeeally good. different, but really good.)

AND THE LITTLE AUSSIE BANDS THAT MOST OF YOU PROBABLY HAVEN'T HEARD OF BUT ARE KIND OF BIG DOWN HERE (some at concerts, some at festivals, some of them good, some of them crap):
Something for Kate (pretty good)
Testeagles (amazing. They suck now, but they were good 3yrs ago)
Ammonia (cool)
Superheist (cool)
Jebediah (good when I liked them, which I don't anymore)
The Whitlams (reeeally good)
George (awesome)
Cosmic Psychos (crap)
Mental As Anything (awesome. Remember that "hey there you with the sad face...." song from crocodile dundee? Yeah, that's them. Reeeeaaallly good.)
Spiderbait (pretty cool)
Machine Gun Fellatio (awesome)
SuperJesus (getting boring, now)
Ice Cream Hands (kind of boring)
You Am I (reeeeally good before they got boring)
4th Floor Collapse (reaaaallllly good, also.)
Alex Lloyd (pretty cool)
The Living End (not a bad live show. saw them before they went all popular and they were quite good)
Frenzal Rhomb (shit. reeeeallly shit)

There are more. Heaps more, but they're just little bands I've seen here and there. I made a list of bands that I'd seen a couple of years ago and it was at about 60, and I've seen even more since then.

And please don't ask me about the ska/punk scene in Australia. I can't stand that type of music.

jaguar 09-25-2001 11:07 AM

Parabolate yes you listed some great ones there.
Particualry the Whitlams, they ROCK!!!
BUt you forgot,
SNog
Augie March
I don't you've heard of either unless you lvie in melbourne..You go to Big Day Out?

Parabolate 09-25-2001 07:19 PM

Yeah, I live in Melbourne, but I haven't seen either of those bands. To be honest I haven't really heard anything by Snog, but Augie March are cool. I have a funny story about them, actually.
I was in a music shop (in Knox, I think it was) and I found an Augie March CD under 'M' in the alternative section. I moved it to 'A' and went to look at something somewhere else. I went back to alternative and the same CD was back in 'M'. Don't you love the ignorance of the average music store employee? They work in a music shop and yet they probably haven't hear of more than 10% of the bands they sell CDs by.
And BDO? Damn straight. I went to the last three. My big regret is never seeing Soundgarden, who I would have seen if I'd gone in 97.

Undertoad 09-25-2001 07:37 PM

I keep on not mentioning it but I've heard Snog. For a year or so I was working on the web site for their American record label, Metropolis Records . As a part of that I listened to Snog's first couple of albums, because it was my job to select and create the audio tracks. I particularly liked that "Third Mall from the Sun".

But doing that job I got really tired of the typical industrial vocals. Every band used the same, affected guttural growls.

You and me both. I had an opportunity to see them in '92 and '94...missed 'em both, not to mention, Chris Cornell's solo tour last year here in the States. (Either last year or the year before.) Soundgarden was the biggest influence in my forming a band in 1992.

The 2 bands that I definitely need to see before leaving this earth are Metallica and Van Halen...but ONLY if Dave is back on vocals.

For the record: Ozomatli just released their 2nd CD on September 11th, "Embrace the Chaos." I myself will probably buy it Friday. If you like funk, hip-hop, Latin, and rock put in a bowl, mixed up, and thrown against the wall, you will probably dig them. They put on one of the best live shows you will probably ever see. They are currently playing some shows across the US and will probably branch out across the globe. I highly recommend it.

Tony: You worked for Metropolis? Now THAT is cool...did you get any free shit?

Parabolate 09-25-2001 08:57 PM

Huh, Chris hasn't even been here since 'Garden broke up. I'd love to see him do his solo stuff live.
I'm really looking forward to the new stuff from him and the old RATM guys. Reports say it will be quite Led Zeppelinesque, but I'm not complaining about that.

Undertoad 09-25-2001 10:53 PM

The free shit I got was a copy of almost every release they did, of the first 107 of them that is.

elSicomoro 09-25-2001 11:22 PM

I don't listen to a whole lot of industrial anymore, but they have and have had some great bands on Metropolis. I'm still partial to the Wax Trax! clan though.

Parabolate: I'm not sure what to make of Chris with the ex-RATM members. Each of the artists in RATM is very talented IMO, and I think Chris will bring a whole new element to that trio. And let's not forget that Chris Cornell is a god. :)

I miss the old Lollapalooza Festival. After 1994, it just seemed to go downhill.

jaguar 09-26-2001 06:42 AM

A fellow melbournian on cellar? Small, small world. What suburb? If you don't mind me asking.

I don't know any other bands quite snog, i find thier songs fall into 2 catagories, industial techno stuff or slower stuff with thsoe lyrics you were talking about. Best i find by far is Real wise yuppy/Born to be mild.

What is happening iwth RATM? I havne't ehard much and haven't had time to follow it up after thier lead singer left they seem to dissipear, he really was they guy who made it all work so incredibly (he says listening to Renegades of Funk...(and yes that is one of the few legal CDs i own)

I've only seen AUgie March once at a free show at the gardens next to the art center across from flinders, i'd say you'd know where i mean.

dave 09-26-2001 11:23 AM

Incubus
Mindless Self Indulgence

Note: I don't drink or do drugs, so all shows were seen as presented. No chemicals altered my perception in any way.

Parabolate 09-26-2001 06:56 PM

Yeah, Jag, another Melbournian. I live in Burwood.
As far as RATM is concerned, Zak De La Rocha, the singer, has been replaced by ex-Soundgarden singer Chris Cornell. RATM and Cornell are on two different record companies, and due to the agreement between the two companies, the band will not be allowed to use the name Rage Against The Machine. They haven't confirmed a new name yet, but so far the music has been described as "groundbreaking" and rather Led Zeppelin inspired.

Hey Dhamsaic, I would also cut off a finger or two to see Soundgarden. They were my favourite band for more than 3 years but I never saw them live. And as for FNM, I saw them once in 97 (on my 18th birthday, actually) and I would dearly love to see them again.

And I wish and hope and pray (well, not pray, really) that System of a Down would come to Australia.

Parabolate 09-26-2001 06:58 PM

And oh, Dhamsaic, Tool will leave you changed, too. Try to make sure you've listened to Reflection a few times before going, otherwise you mind find the 11 minute track a bit boring.
Unless, of course, you already know the song well, in which case, look forward to hearing it live, as they will probably play it.

elSicomoro 09-26-2001 09:18 PM

A friend of mine here in Philadelphia is obsessed with Tool, particularly Maynard James Keenan, aka "Her baby daddy." I'm still trying to get into their new CD...I've had it since it came out, but IMO, it's a hard listen. I liked the Perfect Circle CD better. From what I've read, the Tool CD was put together rather quickly, and that may be why it doesn't sound very cohesive to me.

Parabolate 09-26-2001 09:51 PM

Hmmm... a hard listen it is, but not cohesive? They actually spent more than a year making that album. It definitely takes some getting used to, but that's Tool for you. I quite like the lack of rock anthems like Forty Six & 2 and Stinkfist. It's a very fulfilling album to get right into, but it doesn't work for everybody.
I don't think Mer De Noms was as good as anything that Tool has done, except maybe Opiate, but it's still a great album. I would class it as the second best album of last year, after the Deftones' White Pony.

let's crucify the ego...

yeah. i got lateralus the day it came out. i've listened to it probably (no joke)... three or four hundred times... so i'm down with reflection... gotta say though that my favorite track is ticks & leeches... though i wish they'd have ended the song with the last "suck me dry" instead of banging out a few more chords and speeding it back up... oh well... favorite tool album is undertow actually. that's what got me started. it's also got four degrees, which is pretty much my favorite tool song... been into tool since '93 and it isn't slowing down...

faith no more, i've been listening to since '89... i'm a retardedly big faith no more fan... have 23 fnm cds (only band/group/artist that surpasses that is nine inch nails - i have about 30 nin cds, i haven't counted them recently, though i could list them all off to you)... i was going to see faith no more on 9/16/97 but my dad wouldn't let me go (alas, i was 16 at the time)... he said "i'll let you go next time they come around, i promise"... they broke up in early '98... never got to saw them, although i had a chance in '93 and in '95... 'course, each time, dad didn't want me to go... :(

soundgarden... man... the reason i say that they're the most underappreciated band is because no one really looks at them as "one of the best" or anything... they tend to get heaped in as a "grunge" band... yet i put them above nirvana easily... maybe even above pearl jam... but definitely in my top 10... down on the upside is a hugely underrated album as well... i think it was a great last album... i used to not find it nearly as good as superunknown (which has been a favorite cd of mine ever since it came out), but i think down on the upside probably even surpasses that... when they broke up, i was like "oh well"... wasn't particularly moved or anything 'cause i kinda thought that down on the upside wasn't that great... but i've definitely come to appreciate it in the last 2 years... i'd cut off a few fingers to see them roar through a live show :)

Parabolate 09-27-2001 01:55 AM

leave behind this place so negative and blind and cynical, and you will come to find, that we are all one mind, and capable of all that's imagined and all conceivable...

sorry, got carried away there. It's my 2nd favourite song of all time, behind Pushit (especially the live version on Salival) and ahead of Third Eye.
Tool do have a habit of dragging out a song as far as it can go, like Ticks and Leeches, and then some more, but that's one of the main reasons I love them so much.
I first got into Tool in 95 when someone gave me a tape that had King for a day... on one side and Undertow on the other. Neither album fit completely on the tape, but I was into both those bands from that moment on. I copied the tape, and I still have it to this day. It hangs around in my car and on my desk at work.
When Aenima first came out, I can't say i got into it straight away. I was only 16, and a big Nirvana fan, so they were a little inaccessible for me. I didn't even get into Stinkfist for some strange reason. I'm glad, though, because i was able to get into it properly when I became more musically mature. This didn't really happen 'til I was 19 or 20.

As for Soundgarden, they were never really a grunge band. They were more of a metal band that just happened to come from Seattle, and put out a rather brilliant and successful album the same year as Ten and Nevermind came out. I thought DOTUS was rather underrated, too. I can listen to it from start to finish and enjoy pretty much every song, especially Pretty Noose, Overfloater, and Boot Camp. The latter is probably a tad too short though. It would be better if it lasted longer.

Aah, well, nothing lasts forever, eh?

dave 09-27-2001 10:33 AM

man... i've been listening to DOTUS for about the last 3 weeks straight :) occasionally i throw some tori in the cd player... or some tool, or some nails... but i can't get off soundgarden for the time being... i think my favorite tracks are pretty noose, zero chance, blow up the outside world, burden in my hand, tighter & tighter, no attention, overfloater, an unkind and finally, boot camp. hehe. and yeah, it is kinda short. i even like the rest of the songs... those are just my favorites on the album :)

Galadriel 09-27-2001 12:10 PM

I just turned 21 and live in Hicksville so keep that in mind.

Aerosmith (twice) favorite concert memory: my dad almost kicking some frat boy's ass
Cowboy Mouth (thrice) a religious experience, highly recommended
Caroline's Spine
Better Than Ezra
Built For Speed
Godsmack
Staind
Sevendust (twice)
Black Crowes
Creed
Candlebox
finger eleven (twice)
Cold
Systematic
Afghan Wigs
stuck mojo
Ultraspank
Clutch

and various opening bands that I no longer recall.

But given that "Ænima" came out in late 1996, I expected a bit better I guess. "Undertow" was great, as was "Ænima." I'm not saying that "Lateralus" is a bad CD...I'm still working on it. :)

I am not a fan of "Opiate," other than the fact that the album cover is cool. "Mer de Noms" is like Tool-lite, but I really dug it. I wore the hell out of that CD last summer, particularly "Magdalena."

"Sober" started getting airplay in St. Louis in mid-1993. I happened to see them at Lollapalooza '93. At the time, they were on the second stage. They were sawing the heads off Cabbage Patch dolls and tossing them to the crowd...it was a good set though. I'd have to go with "Ænima" as my favorite.

Quote:

faith no more, i've been listening to since '89... i'm a retardedly big faith no more fan...
You and my friend from high school would get along great...he drooled over FNM. I had tix to see their last tour (when Limp Bizkit opened for them...I think this was their last tour), but sold off my ticket. To me, FNM was one of those bands that would put out a great album ("The Real Thing," "King For a Day"), then put out a strange one ("Angel Dust," "Album of the Year").

Now, speaking of Patton, let's talk about Mr. Bungle. I love Mr. Bungle! Particularly their first one. It's one of my favorites. And "Disco Volante" may very well be the strangest album ever released on a major label.

Quote:

soundgarden... man... the reason i say that they're the most underappreciated band is because no one really looks at them as "one of the best" or anything... they tend to get heaped in as a "grunge" band
Now, I wouldn't say that. Soundgarden, while sometimes panned as a glorified metal band, were an extremely talented band. Cornell...Thayil...Ben Shepherd...Cameron...all respected artists. They were the first "grunge" band to sign to a major label (1990's "Louder than Love")...and they were courted before that. I liked the way Kim Thayil described "grunge" once: "It's one part punk, one part metal, and one part somewhere between psychadelic and retarded."

Quote:

down on the upside is a hugely underrated album as well... i think it was a great last album...
I got mad at them for releasing that album. To me, it was just rehashing "Superunknown." Every album before that had that special something that made it unique...I just didn't feel it with that last album.

elSicomoro 09-27-2001 11:28 PM

And for post #500...

It seems only right that I use music for post #500. So...what's in everyone's CD players these days? For me:

--Danzig: "III: How the Gods Kill"
--Nitzer Ebb: "Ebbhead"
--Tool: "Ænima"

and tomorrow, I will buy Ozomatli's "Embrace the Chaos"...and maybe the new Jamiroquai CD to boot.

Parabolate 09-28-2001 02:08 AM

What CDs?

Shouldn't you start a new thread for this?

Anyway, I've got a 6 disc player in my room. It's a magazine-based one, so it takes, like, 3 hours, to change from one CD to another.

At the moment I think (I'm at work now) that I've got Down On The Upside, Alex Lloyd - Black the Sun, Slipknot's first album, Placebo - Black Market Music, Tool - Opiate, and I think Metallica's Reload is in there too. Lateralus, White Pony, Aenima and Salival all float in and out of there pretty frequently, as well.

dave 09-28-2001 05:56 AM

in my cd player at work, down on the upside. in my cd player at home, lateralus. in jenni's car cd player, which i am frequently in control of, pretty hate machine.

going to work now. 5:55 am. slept on my hand funny and it's still half numb. hate that.
