Remember Webscalpel?

Well, he's gone...404 when you try to go that url.

Guess the logo wasn't quite enough to make up for the lack of meaningful content...

For those wanting to have a good time reviewing the Webscalpel Logo Contest thread...

Man! I am so sorry that I missed that thread.. I guess that's what I get for only checking a few of the sub-forums. I suppose it's too late to post to that thread. Alas!

So: has "Don't mess with the hateful web lemmings" been the Cellar tagline yet?

Elspode 09-20-2003 05:43 PM

Oooh!! Excellent suggestion!

It's too bad that antibitch didn't join us. She would have been great here.

LUVBUGZ 09-21-2003 01:19 PM

Els, I just spent the morning reading that classic Webscalpel thread and the Ciera Myst (sp) deal that was linked in there. Boy, I don't feel so bad anymore about people jumping on my ass about the Big Pig thread and the resulting BS overflow into every thread I posted in. I kinda feel like I passed the Cellar initiation or something. Whew, I'm glad that is overwith. I've been laying low waiting for the storm to blow over. I guess it's safe to put in my irritating two-cents again. This time I'll be ready for the shit to hit the fan:turd:. So, am I a non-newbie yet? I haven't had the opportunity to get into a pissing contest with Radar or Cairo which use to be the basic criteria for becoming a bona fied Cellarite. Does surviving Quzah, Whit, and Dagney count?:p

OnyxCougar 09-21-2003 03:38 PM

I just read them as well. I think Luv got nailed harder than antibitch did, tho. Mostly because she let us see her feelers were hurt than anything else. Quzah smelled the fear and it was over.

I don't remember my first post (WAAAAY back) in March, either, but I do recall it didn't spark any flames. 'Course, I had been lurking for a good while before that, and had a general idea of what pisses the "meanies" off. ;)

I've noticed lately I've been bolder with my opinions and what I post/don't post... and for some reason these recent posts don't spark any debate as I expect them to. *sigh*

I'll get the hang of this place eventually, I suppose.

Glad you're back Luv.

At the time I joined, there were only 16 other people here, mostly Philadelphians. And no Dave or Jag or Bruce...man, that WAS a long time ago.

Cairo is long gone, or so it seems. Too bad, 'cause I hadn't been around very long when I discovered what fun it was to irritate her. She had a MAJOR superiority complex. Radar is just Radar...you learn to filter him. Quzah, Whit and Dagney are actually pretty reasonable people, IMHO. We all have strong opinions, and they often come out here, but it is by and large a pretty safe place to be, even if someone is ripping off your head and shitting down your neck. You need a fairly thick skin anywhere that opinionated, intelligent people gather to discuss.

Just don't go and hide anymore, LB...no one knows how to deal with that!

xoxoxoBruce 09-21-2003 07:11 PM

You all suck! pitter patter pitter patter slam

OnyxCougar 09-21-2003 07:32 PM

And some of us suck better than others. :D

Elspode 09-21-2003 08:07 PM

Braggart. Or is that braggartess?

Torrere 09-21-2003 11:36 PM

I had been drifting around the Cellar for a long time before I joined, and by that time I was sufficiently cowed. I had watched several flamefests between MaggieL and jaguar. I usually added on pithy comments onto the Image of the Day, rarely stated any really strong opinions.

I didn't actually get actively into posting until I went elsewhere, a small little forum that some people I knew visited. It was there that I got into posting actively, maybe two posts a day. Tragically, some newbies came and ruined the neighborhood, but I had developed the confidence to post here.

I still haven't gotten into a real flamefest, alas. I don't hold ludicrously strong opinions on Gun Control or the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, but that might not be all of it.I think that most flamefests on the Cellar occur when someone goes too far, beyond what is supported by the facts. I also haven't posted many threads on my own, and the one that I posted because it was something that I cared about... no one replied to.

dave 09-21-2003 11:58 PM

What one was that? I might have missed it.

dave 09-22-2003 12:01 AM

Oh yeah, and flamefests start for two reasons. One is that someone makes a completely ridiculous statement in an asshole-ish manner and someone that knows better decides to take them to school. The other reason is that someone makes a perfectly reasonable and sound statement and some idiot thinks it's wrong and responds in a dickheaded way. Reasonable person becomes very unreasonable and proceeds to give them a beatdown.

jaguar is typically one of the ones that is getting a beatdown.

antibland 07-27-2004 03:36 AM

still a bunch of lemmings i see

Hey flamers, lemmings, what's up??

This is the webscalpel guy. I'm back and 30% more agile. I've honed my CSS, DHTML, and PHP skills since you last torched my (admittedly) pitiful design skills. I have gotten a little better though. I accept my limitations and work and web development more than design. I leave the design for the designers and the rest to myself.

It's funny. You guys were my first taste of what a bitter, cruel place the webs could be. Now I see all the patterns and laugh it all off. Well, this trip down memory lane has ended.

Andrew

jaguar 07-27-2004 03:50 AM

um hello, example then?

Undertoad 07-27-2004 08:34 AM

Congrats on honing your stuff down to what's saleable out there, have you tried guru.com to get work at all?

We schooled you out of love, because you tried to come here and scam us into designing your logo. That's not what the community is all about, and so you became fair game. The web is harsh on anonymous people coming into communities and trying to USE them for things they are not really for. The community has to defend itself, and what you saw, unfortunately from your POV, was one of the most elegant defenses possible: the community turned around what was basically spam and made it a net positive for itself with humor and joy. And we've done it several times since.

Please hang out and see what we are really about. It's a community, so you truly get what you give. Asking for a handout logo without giving first is poor form but we are actually pretty accepting people and would gladly overlook it as a silly thing that happened.

antibland 07-27-2004 12:39 PM

I didn't see the defense as elegant. Especially when 90% of the sites belonging to the people who were part of the "elegant defense" looked liked dogsh!t. Whatever. It's all over and I'm just here for some exercise.

You fail to mention that 95% of those are not commercial sites, and therefore are permitted, or rather expected to look like dogshit.

jaguar 07-27-2004 12:54 PM

If all you're here to do is spew vitrol, let me say, probably on behalf of a fair few people...
Fuck Off.

If you want to discuss design, web coding, web app development and the challanges of webdesign I'm more than happy to, or if you want to just contribute go for it but if all you're going to do is flame about your bruised ego from a thread from another era, seriously, fuck off.

antibland 07-27-2004 01:18 PM

Well, why discuss web programming, design, etc..., with the purpose of improving one’s skills, when the overall level of output is, well, dogsh!t? I wholly disagree that most non-commercial sites should look amateurish and non-standards compliant. It seems your mind is somehow pigeonholed in a time when animated gifs were an acceptable addition to a webpage. Have a look at moderately to heavily read blog sites. These are non-commercial sites that look good and are usually standards compliant. Check your facts first please, instead of leaning on the gray matter of a community that doesn't know markup from (insert obvious plural noun here).

jaguar 07-27-2004 01:24 PM

And you're judging that based on what exactly? Think you're such hot shit? Congratualtions, you and half every other 3rd kid your age can code up some crap in PHP in your spare time and might even get it to scrape though the W3 validator for 1.1 transitional, get back to me when you're on StyleBoost or create something unique an interesting beyond pulling content out of mysql and creating some amazing header image with a probably stolen font in your pirated copy of photoshop.

heck everything I create is XHTML 1.0 Strict and CSS compliant and works in everything from IE4 to Opera and I certainly wouldn't entertain the idea that I'm good at web development.

Hey Antibland, here's a graphic for you...

perth 07-27-2004 02:41 PM

Hey Beestie, if you animate that I'll host it on my webpage. I'm thinking have it flash a lime-green background or something. Oh, and a spinning skull. While we're at it, can someone make me a midi or something I can embed on every page? And is it okay if I leave the document title at "Untitled Document"?
