9/12/2003: Newborn panda thrives

http://cellar.org/2003/panda3wks.jpg

The newborn from three weeks ago is doing quite well, and "It's a Boy!" They couldn't work out whether it was male or female until its second exam, which you see above from Wednesday. They "stole" the baby from its mom for a mere six minutes while mom was eating.

Cute little smiling laddie.

There are only about 1200 pandas in the world.

dave 09-12-2003 11:31 AM

Any word on the twin?

Undertoad 09-12-2003 11:38 AM

The twin didn't survive.

Griff 09-12-2003 12:13 PM

Thanks Toad! The girls love the animal pics.

LUVBUGZ 09-12-2003 12:17 PM

Cute little baby panda. Big difference from the little speck on his mama's chest last time UT posted a pic. of him. I haven't been following though, UT. Did the other baby end up being stillborn?

Guey 09-12-2003 12:18 PM

So, the twin died and the turd lived?

Thanks dave for pointing out the obvious, but I was asking UT if he had any more specific info. other than "twin didn't survive".

Undertoad 09-12-2003 12:59 PM

I tried to get more info on the other but didn't find anything. But I did find they've put video of this very exam online. (Click on "It's a Boy") It's fun to watch, because in the middle of it, the little bear lets out a few squeaks. They don't do very much to the cub, but he protests anyway. (You can even see the hands of the press photographer who took the above shot)

From the zoo site:

"The second twin, whom zoologists had expected to be stillborn, was birthed some three days after the first. It lived for a week before succumbing to PIV, or Panda Immunodeficiency Virus."

daniwong 09-12-2003 01:15 PM

OHH! That is so darn cute!!!!!!

Ouch. That's not a good sign for his future sex life, if they can't even tell if he's male. :D I think some of the daily spam I get may have some products that might help him out.

Of course, isn't the entire problem that Pandas are so stoned all the time they just lay around instead of mating anyway? Or is that the Koalas?

Quzah.

The pandas are coming
On a rampage of the dead!

Leah 09-14-2003 07:12 PM

Skunks 09-15-2003 07:08 PM

Nah. Actually, the mpeg of that episode a friend tossed me was quite disturbing.

It was just an odd concidence, really, and I wanted to see what, if any, response the quote would draw.

xoxoxoBruce 09-21-2003 08:28 AM

Do you think they eat their young?;)

elSicomoro 09-21-2003 08:32 AM

Mmmm...tastes like chicken.

No, Bruce. Pandas are herbivores, not carnivores. But they might roll over and accidentally squash the poor little baby:(

xoxoxoBruce 09-21-2003 07:16 PM

Oh yeah, then how do they know their young taste like chicken?:p

Why don't you ask Syc, he's the one who said they taste like chicken, maybe he's tasted baby panda before:confused:

Elspode 09-22-2003 08:03 AM

It really is quite remarkable the variety of things you find in Chinese groceries these days, isn't it, Syc?

xoxoxoBruce 09-22-2003 05:42 PM

Cool link, Els. For only $10 you can be officially nuts. :D

wolf 09-23-2003 12:58 AM

I can hook it up for you AND I'll see to it that it's covered by insurance.

xoxoxoBruce 09-23-2003 04:24 AM

Really, Wolf? You know some hookers...and can get my ins to cover it? :D

Ok clearly I must log in more often. But I repeat myself. Now, did the two of you not have massive fun some time back over photo retouching?
If it is you two, and you're now seemingly more civil... Bueno, bueno. If it is not you two, I apologize.
