8/9/2003: Performance artist "rips off" skin

http://cellar.org/2003/trapped.jpg

The official caption: Ksenia Vidyaykina performs as a 1920's era strip tease dancer who takes off her cloths, and then her skin in a portion of 'Trapped,' a one woman performance which tells stories of women alone, confined, and forced into difficult choices, during a press preview of the New York International Fringe Festival, Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2003, in New York.

"...takes off her cloths"? The Associated Press ain't what it used to be.

The Philadelphia Fringe Festival is coming up in 3 weeks...I wonder if she'll perform here too.

Welcome to the post-Internet era. Nobody give a damn about speling or grammer.

Dave does.:D

Hubris Boy 08-09-2003 09:00 PM

Didn't Griff do something like that to a deer once?

Michael Roth 08-09-2003 10:04 PM

I wonder if Robbie Williams has seen this article yet...

"Fringe" or "cringe"? Just that little image there makes me shiver and clutch my thigh.

Perhaps she begins her performance wrapped in various pieces of unfinished textiles? In that instance, the statement would be correct.

maybe she isn't wearing Clothes maybe she is just wearing cloths, if you look at her feet those don't look like clothes to me.

Sounds like a ripoff.

I know you are all thinking this, but not saying it, so I'm going to be the gross guy...

Does she rip off her tits? Disgusting though that may seem, it *would* be quite the statement about the current state of affairs as concerns the female form in pop culture.

Torrere 08-10-2003 09:10 PM

I hadn't considered that, but I don't think it's all that important. She simply rips off the skin that's over her breasts, same as the rest of her skin... right?

Maybe I'm wrong and she doesn't rip off all of her 'skin'.

xoxoxoBruce 08-10-2003 09:41 PM

Great date. you could tear off a piece anytime.

Emrikol 08-11-2003 01:47 PM

Okay, maybe I'm dumb...or not...but, I can't figure it out. Is she really pulling off her own skin? *shudders*

a hack

As Michael Roth already alluded to before me, Robbie Williams already did this in a music video. Tore his ass right off (as well as the rest of his body parts). It was kinda gross, but really funny because the women watching were so turned on by his bloody body parts being thrown at them. It kind of made fun of how we're so into the physical aspect of people. Not sure if it was meant to trigger that response, but that's what I got out of it.

Anyway, it makes me feel like this new act is a hack job, but maybe I'm off base.

Of course that's not her own skin. No sane person would do such a thing, and special effects technology are more that capable of simulating the effect. And besides that, I don't think that's what it would look like if you ripped off your skin. It probably wouldn't even stretch like that.

Besides, then it'd have to be a "one time only" performance. I mean, there's only so much skin to go around. Even if you were one of those morbidly obese people who lose all their weight real fast so they have hanging folds of skin.

Quzah.

elSicomoro 08-11-2003 08:15 PM

I remember that video...MTV in the US would only play it late at night, IIRC.

I've seen some insane people do such a thing ...

Also, there's a lot of extreme stuff in performance art. I remember reading an article in the NY Times Art and Leisure Section about some performance artist (who, incidentally, was HIV+) who would self mutilate (in artistic ways) with an X-Acto knife and press paper towels against the wounds to transfer the impressions to them. As the 'piece' progressed, the towels would be hung from a clothesline that stretched across the stage.

What a package ... art and a biohazard all in one.
