6/9/2003: Spencer Tunick in Barcelona

This one is getting wide coverage by the "regular" media, but IotD has been studious at picking up all the Spence Tunick stuff from the very beginning.

Again, Mr. Tunick is a photographer who is specializing in shooting nudes in wide-open public space. This meant that yesterday, about 7000 people (a new record) stripped off and settled down in the public square in Barcelona, Spain for the purpose of art.

It should always be noted that this is a news image (of sorts) and not the actual art image that Tunick is creating. He had the people "pose" in at least two different positions to get a different look and feel. In another shot that I saw, the people were in turtle-like positions and you saw a sea of backs.

Someone on one of the news channels pointed out that Mr. Tunick is shooting internationally because of the amount of hassle he's had in shooting nudes at home. In fact -- I didn't know -- he's been arrested five times in NYC. But he doesn't get that sort of flak overseas.

In response, I'm posting the most graphic image I could find of the event, my own tiny little shot across the bow of the culture wars. IotD is not porn, but it's adult, and we all know and understand the difference.

Why do I keep visualizing a steamroller in this image?

I have a friend who lives in Barcelona - I wonder if he's there?

What is really funny is that I was about to point out that nudity does not always have to be about sex by showing that none of the men appear to have an erection.

So of course upon closer inspection there appears to be one guy who is visibly at 'full mast'.

Sort of like a game of 'Where's Waldo'.

Unfortunately that is not the right image for that post. That's not a Tunick there. I must have blown it and chosen identical filenames and accidentally not noticed the overlap. Damn.

Probably the only people who are secure enough in their bodies to pose naked. I'd imagine when your going for 7000 people to lay down naked in the street the casting call ain't all that selective. I know you wouldn't get me out there. The comparisons between whales and beaches would be too easy.

No lawsuit but I wonder if it was deliberate or as someone else said, that the "others" don't want to be naked in public.

I suspect he might be herding all the people who don't fit his ideal to the less visible parts of the photos.

Naturists indeed do come in all shapes and sizes ... it's about comfort with your body and celebrating that with joy, regardless of lovehandles and stretch marks.

No lawsuit. You can bet he's in Europe, not America, for more than one reason.

These aren't <b>his</b> photos, though - they're that of the news organization. For about the twelve billionth time. We haven't seen his yet.

I can spot two men in the foreground who have erections, though they aren't necessarily at ninety degrees. You can notice a little blip rising above their legs. The guy in the center foreground has a definite erection, and the guy just past the redhead does too.

There is one guy who appears to have a foot at just the right place that richlevy might be talking about, but that's just a foot.
