Graduate program in North America

I am preparing for the TOEFL/GRE/GMAT tests now. I want to apply graduate program in NA. I was majored in Material engineering in my univerisity(www.csu.edu.cn). But I like business/management/marketing/economy. I want to change into that major. It is very difficult to get one USA visa now. Many China students who get the school offers can not go to study becasue can not get visas. So they go to Canada, UK, Australia, Germ..

It is a big dream in my heart to go abroad to study. I will try my best to learn whatever I face on my way. I want to listen to your good advice.

xoxoxoBruce 05-07-2003 11:19 PM

If you get accepted and a visa, who pays your expenses? Would you have to work also? got any schools in mind?

elSicomoro 05-07-2003 11:28 PM

Bruce brings up some good points. What would you be looking for in a host city? As far as a business program, there aren't many better than the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia (where many Cellar members reside, including me).

Billy 05-08-2003 12:32 AM

Good advice

1. I want to apply scholarship and loan from banks. And I have some savings.

2. I want to know America. I think work is a good way. But I don't like washing dishes in in China restaurants. It have no use to help my experience.

3. I don't know what school I apply now. I want to enter the east schools.

Billy 05-08-2003 12:40 AM

Hahaha... this may not be a selling point!! Billy may feel the urge to get farther away from us rather than closer.

Billy, don't limit your search... there are many fine state universities that might suit your needs. Their names won't smack people upside the head the way "Harvard" or "Wharton" will but you can still get a very good education.

Billy 05-08-2003 07:13 PM

Seach more

SteveDallas, Thank you. I should find omre schools. Now my task is take a good GRE score. I think you can give good advice to apply schools. Thank you for helping me.

McCombs School of Business, University of Texas - One of the best in the nation.

SteveDallas 05-09-2003 09:02 AM

Good luck--I've sometimes wondered how I would react to the GRE now. When I took it, I believe it was only 2 years or so before they started giving it electronically. I'm not sure I like the new systems where what questions you get are determined by your answer on previous questions.

True. "Texas - it's like a whole other country."

Are they still playing those commercials anywhere? We don't tend to see them much here (naturally).

xoxoxoBruce 05-09-2003 10:44 AM

I can picture Gabby Hayes saying "...in the whole USA annnnnd Texas.";)

Yeah, stupid ass commercials featuring some boring ass places in a state with the IQ of a pair of shoe laces.

;) (Yeah, I think I just saw one last week...I'm still taking you up on your offer to take me to Texadelphia, TG.)

Bring it on. I told dave the same thing. We've got quite a few decent places for the meat-eater in you.

The weekly entertainment section of the paper recently had a review of the best burgers in town. There was another article that just listed the best 32 places for a burger.

I'm sure you can pack your philly-cheese eatin' ass into the car and head down for a real meal. Screw that northern crap -- I'll show you how to get some cholesterol and really clog those arteries.

Oh yea -- #666 - post of the beast.

USA and Canada schools

I want to apply the USA and Canada schools in the same time becasue the USA schoold provide much scholarship, I earsier get one Canada visa. I know many USA schools because we chat it each other in China forum to know them as I do here.

Billy 05-09-2003 09:21 PM

GRE/GMAT/TOEFL are canceled in china because of SARS

We don't know when we can apply the test. So many students change to other countries rather than the USA. It is a lose for you and us. TES cancels coputer GRE test in China, HongKong, Taiwan and Korea because they doubt us cheating. The students get higher score than pen test. It is unfair for us to do that. But we have no way to do because we want to go abroad the USA.

xoxoxoBruce 05-10-2003 04:54 PM

Has the Chinese government made any predictions on how long they think it will take to defeat SARS?

Billy 05-10-2003 07:29 PM

No predictions

There are still no any cure medicines in China and world. The scientists are researching medicines. No one can sure what time we could find new medicine. What we can do is defend and wait.

wolf 05-11-2003 12:24 AM

We have recently heard news stories that because of a shortage of masks people, especially in outlying districts, are wearing bras on their faces.

Have you seen anything like this, or even just people wearing masks because of fears of contamination?

Billy 05-11-2003 08:07 AM

Wear face masks

It is the first time to hear that. What you heard is the renown. In fact in the outlying districts there are no people to wear face masks becasue there is no SARS.In that area some women have no bras to wear because them is expensive for them. They wear other China tradition clothes. As you know China is a big weave producing base. We have enough face masks to use.

In Beijin,Shanghai,HongKong, Shenzhen,Guangzhou there are lots of people to wear face masks. But in other areas there are few people to wear masks. It is diffcult to breathe. There are some reasons:

1. Some people are afraid of SARS. They think it is safe for them to wear one.

2. Some people have a cough or other sickness. In this time people fear the cough. For reducing troubles they wear mask to protect other ones.

3. Prevent dust. I sometimes have to wear face mask in work because my work environment has dust. In cities wearing mask may reduce breathe car air.

4. ....

May be we should call for WHO. I have no underwear. Who I can ask for? YOU?

elSicomoro 05-11-2003 08:39 AM

Nah, the UN doesn't want me. I would actually make real decisions, rather than standing around arguing with others.

Maybe you should write an e-mail to Fruit of the Loom. :)

Billy 05-11-2003 07:30 PM

Some Taiwanese use bras as face mask

The news report that they do that. In China mainland there is no report. We send Taiwan some face masks, but they don't receive them.

Hey Billy,
I work at the University of Minnesota and we have a strong relationship with Chinese students and scholars. I dont know too much about it but we have a link to your University. Here is our China Center. They have some visa info, etc. At the U of Minnesota we have the Carlson School of Management. It aint Philly, DC, or Boston, but it is the heartland!

Billy 05-13-2003 07:15 PM

Good web

If I get it,I will invite you have a cup of beer/coffee.

warch 05-15-2003 08:52 AM

You're on.:)

Billy 05-16-2003 05:27 AM

Hope you to like this beer

I like chating with friends having coffee. The feeling is so cool.

warch 05-16-2003 10:45 AM

You've mentioned that you have internet access through cybercafe, are they very plentiful where you are? Are they growing? If not, is it a long wait to get some computer time? I imagine you can enjoy a nice strong coffee at the cybercafe to keep your brain moving. But if I traveled to China, I would want to try all the different flavors of tea!

Billy 05-17-2003 10:59 PM

Cyber cafe

Now I am surfing Internet in net cafe because I cannot access Internet in office. There are lost netcfe in China because many people have no pc to use or can not access Internet in home. Now the growing slow because more and ore family can access Internet in home. It don't need wait for a long time now. Personally, I don't like tea. I can not sleep after drinking tea.

xoxoxoBruce 05-18-2003 10:24 PM

I told you "they" were watching.

Billy 05-18-2003 11:49 PM

I is spying by them

I don't care that because I just do the right thing, don't fear them.

Well see, that's the deal! The best conversations take place when you are awake!;) Coffee has always kept me more awake than tea, but I obviously have never had the powerful tea you're talking about, and perhaps you have never tasted the hearty dark brew of coffee I enjoy here. ummm... caffinated beverages of the world.

Billy 05-20-2003 05:25 AM

The differences

You can have the tea in China Town. There are many Starbucks in China now. I think I can have the coffee that you saied. Exchange to each other.

jaguar 05-20-2003 09:11 PM

Want good tea? Twinings! Best tea underage virtual slave labour can buy!

Tea keeps you awake? Try a tripple expresso, should keep you up for a fortnight or so.

juju 05-20-2003 10:39 PM

There are Starbucks in China and in Australia, and yet there are still no Starbucks where I live. Should I feel blessed or cursed?

Undertoad 05-20-2003 11:02 PM

The teas from Peets Coffee and Tea (peets.com) are the same kind and quality you find in Chinatown. For a treat I got the Golden Dragon Oolong, which has hand-twisted whole leaves. Excellent.

warch 05-21-2003 10:43 AM

Two thoughts:
a. JAG! back for talk of Starbucks globalism and child labor in the tea industry! Yea! Youre not in prison, or if you are, theyre serving you Twinings?

b. Tony! "Hand-twisted whole leaves" sounds like a delicious and I'll confess slightly erotic brew. :)

Undertoad 05-21-2003 01:09 PM

Depends how much you like the tea I guess!

After you brew this tea you have whole, full tea leaves at the bottom of your teapot. Not the finely-chopped things, or the dust that goes into most teabags.

Made in Italy! Water goes in the bottom, fine ground dark roast in the middle. Heat forces the water up through the filter extracting all the coffee goodness into the vessel above. pour. add cream. enjoy!:)
