2016 gift idea help thread

55-65yo male brexit fan (), small/token lightweight easy to mail gift. go.....

chocolate, tie clips..???? there has to be something a little more original. :/

I found a $1m Springsteen banknote that's going in with it...

Undertoad 11-30-2016 08:50 PM

I would say Powerball ticket but some lot down south won the stinkin thing

A multitool like a Leatherman is always a good gift. They are available at many price levels. xoB gifted me one once, and it has been like super awesome, that thing has gone a long way, and is still ticking. Of course the blade will make it highly dubious if not illegal in Britain, so that is a huge plus for a gent like this guy.

monster 11-30-2016 08:59 PM

yeah...... I think I'll wuss out on shipping knives, but thanks, definitely the right vein. It's my BIL, I barely know him and what I do know does not impress too much. Not going to push any envelopes.

xoxoxoBruce 11-30-2016 08:59 PM

Chocolate and have it delivered. ;)

Clodfobble 11-30-2016 09:45 PM

I think these crank-powered flashlights are super cool.

Bonus #1: they aren't actually the traditional crank, they're spring loaded squeezy things. Much easier to use.

Bonus #2: you get four with the order, and you only have to send him one, which leaves just the right number of stocking stuffers for the kids.

I'd like to know why they retired the best one.

I have 4 of these, but the scissors get dull. I used to get a new one every year for Christmas. I've carried one of them in my left front pocket for over 15 years. It's perfect. Amanda got me a refurbished blue one 3 years ago, and I'm still carrying it.

Might weigh 1 pound or so, but there are neat lighted USB inspection cameras on 5 meter long cables that can connect to a laptop or even a cell phone. Stick them in various holes to see what's inside. They go for about $18 these days on Amazon.

What's in that engine cylinder? In that wall cavity? In that pipe? In that nostril? Under the kitchen stove? Now you can see.

monster 12-01-2016 07:41 PM

neato, will investigate

glatt 12-01-2016 07:48 PM

they call them borescopes or endoscopes.

Here's one. There are tons though.

I gave these pocket lights out as stocking stuffers last year and everyone liked them. A 10 pack is $16 which would give one person enough to put in every coat pocket (or attach to zippers), on every key chain, and in every vehicle. If not for the BIL, perhaps for others.

They come with batteries in them and a split ring attached. The batteries can be replaced (1x CR2032; or, 2x CR2016) by removing 4 screws with a jeweler's (eyeglasses) screwdriver. It's sturdy (industrial contract overrun) and designed without any sharp edges to snag on clothing. This website has other interesting stuff if you go through the menu.

If you want to spend big bucks to wish him good luck with Brexit, go with this: http://www.royalmint.com/shop/The_Silver_Sixpence_2016

I will second the Leatherman, except in the UK. I have four and can't remember how I got along without them. I keep one in my truck, one in my car,one in my pocket and one in my backpack, ready for the zombie apocalypse.

I'm always looking for stocking stuffers so I just bought one lot. Except with shipping, they are $21. So instead of a dollar and change for each one, they are over $2 each. If they are good, they will be worth it.

limey 12-02-2016 08:42 AM

You could order a Leatherman for a UK address from the UK website ... ? (Or I could for you ...)

glatt 12-02-2016 09:55 AM

If the guy annoys you and has kids, you could get one of these for the kids. Only $79.

footfootfoot 12-02-2016 10:19 AM

pocket knives are illegal in the UK?

sexobon 12-02-2016 12:21 PM

Seems that it depends on the knife. Folding knives with blades of 3" or less are OK. Any knife with a blade that locks in the open position; however, is not considered a folding knife. Many models of Leatherman Tools have locking blades which are preferred here for safety (the blade won't accidentally close on your fingers). She'd have to find a model that meets both requirements and hope that her BIL isn't accident prone.

Not directly relevant to this thread, but lately I have been finding that Amazon is a rip off.

My wife wants four of a particular cookie sheet (Vollrath 5314 Wear-Ever Heavy Duty Half Size 13" x 18")

Amazon is $21.99 each
WebstaurantStore, a restaurant supply place, has them for $15.49. WebstaurantStore got my order.

She also wants a 100ml bottle of perfume (BURBERRY Brit Sheer for Her Eau de Toilette, 100ml)

Amazon has them for $92 each and about 5% of the reviews accuse it of being counterfeit because it smells wrong.

Macy's has the 100ml bottle in a gift box kit that also includes a smaller 10ml purse sized bottle and a tube of lotion, plus they had a supply of little Burberry gift pouches that have samples in them that they threw in for free, and they had a big wicker basket full of free Hershey kisses at the register. I helped myself while being rung up. And while the sticker price was also $92, when they rung it up it was only $86. Lots of attentive service from multiple friendly sales ladies.

When somebody sends you a link to something on Amazon that they want, do a little looking around. You'll probably find it for cheaper elsewhere. Amazon doesn't appear to be competing on price any more.

footfootfoot 12-02-2016 02:13 PM

Yeah, it's sort of like using wikipedia for research; it's a good starting place...

monster 12-02-2016 05:00 PM

Agreed. But if it's the same price as the best price I find elsewhere, I still tend to go with Amazon.

Undertoad 12-02-2016 06:23 PM

eBay has the best price on most items, including new and 99% of what is sold in stores.

Gravdigr 12-08-2016 02:12 PM

I asked Momdigr for a butterfly yo-yo.

Yes, a yo-yo for a yo-yo...

monster 12-08-2016 09:52 PM

got him a multi tool keyfob thing.

realized forgot other BIL (not such a rush for him) ....guess what he's getting?

I think the daughter's boyfriend is my only remaining challenge -got to find a birthday present too :(

Clodfobble 12-09-2016 02:37 PM

Mr. Clod and I sat down the other night to buy presents for the dang kids... After an hour, we had purchased exactly one gift for Mr. Clod himself. This is going to be a year of last-minute Target gifts if I can't get my act together very soon...

glatt 12-09-2016 04:18 PM

Stainless steel thermos water bottle thing.

captainhook455 12-09-2016 07:32 PM

I like the leather man and the thermos idea or an indestructible aluminum led flashlight. For the ladies some high dollar perfume, white fox jacket. Don't get anything for the kitchen unless the item is all she talks about.

Like Clod, I sat down to buy gifts the other day. After about an hour, the one gift I was able to find is back-ordered until Jan. 9th. Shit.

I bought one on a whim for Pete, because our old Thermos was pretty beat. It simply isn't the same product. It is very light weight and lacks the pour spout. I'm not sure how its gonna play out. Also turns out to be Chinese so branding does not imply USA made.

Stanley.

I have a two quart stainless steel bottle, I've had it for years. The handle failed. I called their company customer service line, ONE CALL, and a new one a arrived in a a week.

I still have and use the original just not the handle.

Five stars.

lumberjim 12-11-2016 12:44 PM

I've got 2 Hydro flask bottles. Highly recommended. Less expensive than the Yeti, but top quality. They have myriad size and color and lid options

captainhook455 12-12-2016 06:42 AM

I finally bought something the wife wanted. We went by Belks and she found a pair of zip up the side knee high boots for $90, but they were half off for 45. I didn't dodge the bullet though, because she also got slacks and a dress. She doesn't have any clothes. I have half of one closest. The other is one of those square non stick pans with glass lid that she can even put in the oven. See them on TV 3 payments of $24.99, free shipping or go to Riteaid for $49.99. She hasn't seen it yet.
