More than just Cellerites missing...
Did something get changed? Every area I click on only has maybe a dozen threads now where there used to be many pages of them.
What's up with IotD? Almost no new posts this entire month, and only 9 threads show up going in from the main forum! I have the IotD archive bookmarked, and when I tried clicking on links older than the oldest one on the IotD main page they came right up no problem. I am confused. And worried. Where's everyone and all the history? Are we broken? |
Bruce has left us so there are no new IotD posts and it is probably going away. Everything else is normal.
|
The Cellar: Going for the gold in normalcy, will settle for not being disqualified
QUOTE: Normalcy vs. normality Normality and normalcy are different forms of the same word. Normality is centuries older, though, and many English authorities consider it the superior form, for what that’s worth. Nouns ending in -cy usually come from adjectives ending in -t—for example, pregnancy from pregnant, complacency from complacent, hesitancy from hesitant—while adjectives ending in -l usually take the -ity suffix. Normalcy is unique in flouting this convention. |
Maybe Snakeadelic was volunteering to take on IOTD?
:D I believe it's still for anyone to post 'em if they got 'em, right? Also, summer is slow season. always. We've realized there's something out there...... |

Dude, you can't let IotD die. That is what has driven so many people here.
|
There have been a few times where xoB posted a reply in the wrong thread. Perhaps the condition has progressed and he's now posting on the wrong websites.

I get the having time thing. I don't get the complaining about IotD or the lack thereof. I think our more modern day IotD is gravdigr's Today in History thread. I really like that. I learn stuffs. It's all good content. We just don't always get what we want...sometimes you just might find, you get what you need. ;) |

Some people have a knack for selecting images that intrigue or move the masses. I am not that person, hence why I would need more time.
|
Some people think other people's hard work must be due to a "knack" for it. Unless you stood over previous IotD submitters' shoulders and watched them do it, you have no clue how long it took them.
|
Clod, I am merely trying to pay the ultimate compliment to those who contributed. I know hard work can be involved, but I think some folks also have a gift for such things. Particularly as I know some of the contributors beyond here.
|
I musta missed something BIG. I do, however, love me some IotD, and I bet if several of us got our heads together we could at least cough up a couple of new posts there a week. I'll be back to daily online activities around about the 25th of this month because my neighbor has to go say goodbye to his best friend since 1988, and when he travels I go with as a medical aide. His laptop doesn't do on-the-road wifi :(. But if the Cellar doesn't get wiped while I'm gone, I'd be happy to see what I might be able to put back into something that gave me YEARS of daily enjoyment before I scraped up the courage to join.
Does the forum have the code to put that little "Share it on Pinterest" button on images? Cuz I know a Pinterest account that would be happy to link up, which might get us more exposure. The weirdest thing is that I have the IotD Archive page bookmarked, and the threads that don't show up in the forum any more still pop right up from that page. I have extremely limited knowledge of how these things work, or that might make more sense to me. |
If we could just harvest all the mental energy required to come up with something to post in our 43 word ass threads, we'd have the power to Image the crap out the Day! :D
|
Look, I've got cat photos that need tending to!!! :D
|
I'm pretty sure that we can resurrect it. All I have to do is
1) Complete a forum software change, which has been pending for months now. a) Fix whatever's preventing private messages from porting <- current issue b) Create a design template that matches the current one c) Make sure old URLs resolve in the new software d) Make IotD Blog View work with the new software 2) Create (probably from scratch) an image sharing system where users can contribute IotD candidates. Integrate into forum software... a) Have the login managed by forum, not an all-new security system! b) Auto-post IotD at some certain time every day 3) Create (or add?) browser extension(s) to right-click to add URL to IotD image sharing system 4) Create The Cellar Facebook group 5) Create (or add?) Cellar<->Facebook hooks to auto-post IotD to The Cellar Facebook group (and point back to us) 6) Solicit current Facebook Cellar users to crosspost IotD to their feeds 7) Reap new users The biggest problem is that most of it falls on me... ...but it would be so nice if all this stuff was in place, so I should just hunker down and do it |

UT, I can imagine you saying all this, being both sincere and a bit sarcastic. :-)
I would be happy to help on the social media end, since part of my current work involves that. |
I think I am being both sincere and a bit sarcastic!
The Facebook bits are actually the fun part... but let's see how step one goes first. And step 1e, not mentioned; which is, move everything to the new software and let everyone get used to it, and work out any kinks that happen along the way. |
I'm sure plenty of cellarites would be happy to work out your kinks UT ;)

Has he actually properly left? |
People never properly leave, they just decide to move on. Sometimes they have reasons, most times they don't.
Bruce's last post and activity are over a month old now. |
Yeah - but that happens from time to time. I meant has he indicated that he is 'leaving' the Cellar?
|
Not to me, not like he told his daily email list goodbye.
|
Gotcha. That's ok then.
I think he's just having bit of a rough time right now (though not quite sure the reason) - I doubt he's actually left the cellar. |

Bruce did something like this before, in 2007. Except that time, he deleted a bunch of stuff. Hopefully he's okay and just taking a break, with no other issues.
I know for myself, some times are busier than others. I haven't been nearly as active in the last 11 years than I was in the first 4 (2001-2005). |
Now the IOTD "Threads in Forum" are down to just six and I can't figure out any connection between them.
I especially worry about Bruce because just a couple of months ago he defined himself with "I make IOTDs." Now he is gone and nothing posted here explains it. |
OIC, you're looking at the overall forum view http://cellar.org/forumdisplay.php?f=10
...which only shows 6 threads because those are the only threads that have been active in the last 30 days. |
I guess that is the connection between them.
Thanks, but still worried. |

Reapers don't fear new users,
Nor do the wind, the sun or the rain, we can be like they are Come on baby... CUT! Guess what? I got a fever! And the only prescription.. is more monkeys and typewriters! |
I said Doctor, is there nothing I can take. I said Doctor, to relieve this itchin' for the Cellar.
Or something. |
The elephant in the room is Facebook.
Why not a Cellar Facebook page? Facebook for the easy stuff, Cellar for the deep shit. Or dipshit. What do I know? |
Hi spode! My get off my lawn feeling is that bacefook sucks, for me, and if you're already on bacefook then why integrate? They're two entirely different things. Pick, choose, or both. But dont pick or choose for others, who really only want the cellar interface.
|
So when you get a brain tumor and come here to share your deep shit...
... but a third of the people aren't following Facebook at all, ... and another third are following it casually, ... and Facebook doesn't show all posts to everyone, Most of the Dwellars will say they don't really know you, you are just a handle and a tumor to them! So good luck with all that, but the Internet is full of semi-anonymous people with handles and tumors. We are going to support our friends who have shared things with us, not semi-anonymous people with handles and tumors. Take your tumor to Facebook! If your post is found to be "important" by the FB algorithm, they MAY show it to all your friends who logged in to FB during the hours following your post. That will *probably* happen if your friends notice and react to your post, and reply to it. *probably* Of course the post about your tumor is going to be sandwiched by an ad and a post about the most recent dumb thing Trump did, so the impact is a little diminished. Maybe you can put "ATTENTION EVERYBODY" so people do pick it up. Of course people are putting "ATTENTION EVERYBODY" on posts about lost cats of people they don't know, so... uh.... I know maybe you can make a FUNNY VIDEO about the tumor? If it goes viral your Kickstarter will cover your meds! Who is going to solve this terrible problem of community on the Internet not being REAL community? Where can we turn to, now that we hate all our real life friends for their horrible politics and ridiculous, petty concerns? IS THERE A WEBSITE FOR THIS? Nah, not really. Usta be. Good luck out there. |
Facebook doesn't show all posts to everyone
Oh! You weren't aware, Dwellar? Didn't it nudge you when you wrote that one thing and only got 7 likes? You have hundreds of friends! How is it that only a small fraction are reading your shit? Wow over half my friends have never said a SINGLE THING to me on FB! Did they unfollow me? Are they not engaged? Am I writing shitty posts? Should I be on Twitter or Pinterest instead? What the fuck is Pinterest anyway? I'm starting to not get it. I suspect others are starting to feel the same. The motivation at Facebook is $18,000,000,000 of gross revenue in 2015, so they really want you to post there. Cellar gross revenue is about -$400. Our motivation is entirely personal. |
follow the money--wise
My money's on you, UT. |
Yeah, FB is a strange beast. My posts tend to attract the same folks over and over. Which is cool, because they are friends...but sucks, because I KNOW FB is limiting my audience.
Of course, on my politics/current events page, I can PAY to target specific people...and it works quite well. But then, aren't I buying friends in a way? Then there is Twitter, which still does things linearly--for now. But quite frankly, once you have about 500 friends there, it's like pissing into the wind and hoping some of that piss lands on people other than yourself. I play social media in a similar way to how I play business--I work the game to my advantage, rather than get run over by it. Some days are better than others. |
FB sucks. I post there to try to reach family and friends who aren't here. But it doesn't work well.
I posted some horse riding family pictures on FB. Mostly for my family. Not really interesting enough to post here. Anyway, my wife was hurt and a little mad at me that I didn't take any of her and post them. Except I had. A lot. FB showed her about a third of the pictures I took. |
I actually like social media a lot...but it can be incredibly fickle.

I see fb as a business and you and all the others there (me too) are the product, or at least the raw materials for that product. The actual product is our attention, which they sell to advertisers who infect our inputs with their ads. You and I are trying to pay attention to what our "friends" and family are posting and by virtue of the art and persistence and numerical superiority of the advertisers' efforts, we pay them attention too. Sometimes it feels like stealing my attention when I'm trying to pay it to something/someone else. I find that whole experience/interface frustrating, waaaaay more than I find it interesting or appealing. I see the cellar as a gathering place for my family of choice. I don't have chunks of my attention sliced off by flashing avatars, like buttons or tallies, not to mention the whole NO FUCKING ADVERTISING! This is worth cash money to me. When I'm trying to enjoy the content of some other stream, tv, radio, internet, print, etc. etc. I find the proportion / intrusion / distraction of the advertising a real factor in my enjoyment of the content. If I'm watching television, I've been known to change the channel when commercials come on and I know I have a lot of company. Same with the radio. Sometimes, I go through my magazines and remove all the bingo cards and bound customer reply cards, sometimes even the heavier stock advertisements. I'm a big fan of ad blockers in my browsers. This kind of winnowing is practically impossible on facebook, and that lack of control combined with the volume of junk (not just the ratio of wheat to chaff) is just too much to make it worthwhile. Lots of stuff there is interesting, just not interesting enough. |
I'm going to start recruiting. Get ready for some weirdos to join up.
|
Wait for the software change though
|
When is that?
|
I dunno, like the next few weeks?
|
You need money?
|
No it's strictly open source here on out.
|
We should raise enough $ for UT to survive for a month and do nothing but Cellar updating.
