Night driving glasses

Years ago, before I wore glasses, I had some yellow shades. IIRC they help at nite, fog and rain. Guess I could have look at a truckstop. I saw some at welding supply other day, maybe safety glasses. All the colors in the spectrom. Didn't ask price. A-holes with their off road lights about blind me.

lumberjim 01-09-2016 01:19 PM

check in a motorcycle shop or hunting supply store. I have a couple pairs. They really do work

get these and look like John Goodman

They do work well. I got a pair of clip-on style for Twil.

As for those idiots who think driving around with stadium lights is cool, they're a fucking hazard to navigation. It's not you, buster, it's them. It is *wrong*, it's *UNSAFE*, to be driving around with lights powerful enough to cast a shadow of the car they're following when that car has it's own headlights on. There's a picture around here somewhere, I swear to god. My car is relatively low so even marginally out of alignment headlights can be a nuisance. Those fucking death-star, crime-scene rolling illumidiots... dangerous. I've been known to pull over and let those assholes by.

busterb 01-09-2016 02:03 PM

I need over the glasses kind. Yeah Big v. I came home after being stuck at hoof Dr. office till after dark. Was raining, in 20 mile I counted around abut 12 cars w/1 headlight and one asshole with 8 lights on his , her hi-pickup. My dilated right eye can't go that shit.

lumberjim 01-09-2016 02:04 PM

Saw those at Walmart, buster. up at the checkout with the as seen on tv stuff. advertised as HD glasses... they are amber tinted

busterb 01-09-2016 05:41 PM

Thanks. Jim, I had heard about thoses, looked at Fred's tv junk no had. I'll check at wallys next week.

monster 01-09-2016 06:12 PM

yeah, Walmart, check out the sporting goods section AND the seasonal good center aisle.

Yeah, it is getting nuts out there.

Be aware that driving with tinted lenses after sunset may be illegal in your area too.

I get the problem with too-bright lights too. And I sit much higher than you. There are jerks who drive with their brights on so they can "see better", others don't mean to but forget that towing aims their headlights up higher, blinding oncoming traffic. And then there's the new super bright lights, which annoy me no end, blinding everybody. I close one eye, so my night vision isn't totally ruined and hold up my hand to shade the light until they pass by.

It really helps.

xoxoxoBruce 01-10-2016 10:36 PM

My van had 7" Marchal headlights, that would burn the paint off the car in front at a light. I was always super careful to dim the before the oncoming cars popped up over a hill. Out west I could see those reflectors along the road for over a mile. Anyway, my buddy took it to Florida pulling a trailer with three Harleys on it, and a trucker on the CB told him to back off. he asked how far and the guy says, about a mile.

busterb 01-11-2016 06:05 AM

@ Pam. Be aware that driving with tinted lenses after sunset may be illegal in your area too.
They don't enforce any other traffic laws around here, but would be just my luck to get caught for that.
Bruce, I once had an old chevy pickup that I put an aircraft landing light in front bumper.
At idle, switch on and would almost kill engine.

Spexxvet 01-11-2016 07:56 AM

Some people find that they're effective, some don't.

Make sure they are POLARIZED yellow. Tinted lenses don't do jack for glare - only polarized lenses do. You can get regular, clips and "fitovers".

busterb 01-11-2016 08:12 AM

Thanks, Spex for that info.

About a year ago ordered some cheap yellow lens glasses fro winter driving, but they came from China on the slow boat and didn't arrive until after the snow had gone.

I tried them at night and they made a bit of difference but not much,
they were great in the rain on the highway with all the spray.

and today I got to try them in the blowing snow, they were very helpful, made things clearer and less eye strain.

"Yellow 'Night Driving' lenses have been shown to provide no benefit in seeing ability at night. They are even hazardous, because they give the driver a feeling of seeing better, which no one has yet been able to explain. Studies have shown that they actually impair visual performance and retard glare recovery. Many promoters have made unfounded claims for the ability of amber to improve night vision. They have employed mass solicitation, usually by mail. The Federal Trade Commission has correctly ruled that such practices are illegal since the lenses do not perform as claimed." - Forensic Aspects of Vision and Highway Safety", Merrill J. Allen, O.D., Ph.D., Et al.
From http://www.laramyk.com/resources/edu...iving-glasses/

Why would feel you can see better if you can't.

Surely the perception that you can see better, means you are perceiving better.

glatt 01-12-2016 10:42 AM

Don't know if they still do, but French cars used to have yellow headlights for presumably the same reason.

I thought it was to keep the bugs away. hahaha

I understand the point of yellow and amber lenses is to filter out the portions of the blue spectrum which doesn't do it for us humans (spexx, weigh in here?) and they are mostly effective at twilight or on overcast days.

I'm thinking overcast days must have more blue light (higher color temp. I'll look that up) and by filtering it out things seems brighter because we see blue light as darker?

maybe?

They increase the contrast and that alone takes strain off the eyes. In B&W photography those color lenses help to render the sky a darker shade of gray since B&W film is somewhat more blue sensitive than our eyes.

glatt 01-12-2016 12:57 PM

I have much more trouble reading blue signs at night. They are noticeably more blurry to me.

BigV 01-12-2016 01:52 PM

Leaving the discussion of color aside, polarized lenses really can make dramatic improvement by reducing the glare from the wet roads.

glatt 01-12-2016 02:14 PM

Agreed. Polarized lenses are amazing.

monster 01-12-2016 06:35 PM

All my sunglasses are polarized. Makes such a difference

busterb 01-12-2016 08:03 PM

We'll no glasses at walmart, fred's and 2 welding supplies. Next check is a truck stop. Damn I hate to go to eye Dr. and pay big bucks for something that may not work.

lumberjim 01-12-2016 09:05 PM

Hold up. Pm me your address. I've got a pair I can send you

I kept your Christmas card, but can't find the envelope

lumberjim 01-12-2016 09:25 PM

Nevermind. I found it in a PM from Feb 2009. Hope you haven't moved since

Yes. I'll just add that the blue light that reduces visual acuity is from scattering. Scattering happens when nice crisp rays of light hit gas, like the atmosphere, which causes them to wiggle, and move into the blue wavelength range. Yellow counteracts the blue, and polarization eliminates almost all of the wiggles that are not in the vertical plane. Glare is light waves not in the vertical plane.

The only negative about polarized lenses is they can cause problems viewing some electronics.

Walgreens has a "as seen on TV" area. I think I've sen them there.

Spexxvet 01-13-2016 08:33 AM

BTW, it's not what we're discussing here, but High Energy Visible light (HEV) is the new UV. Studies have shown that HEV light from screens can do all kinds of harm to people.

Also tinted windows on cars, and windshields which are themselves polarized. I had to get rid of my polarized prescription sunglasses because every time I drove I was surrounded by rainbows all the time like I was high on LSD, then I'd cock my head 45 degrees to the side and suddenly everything in front of me would get much lighter and blind me, then I'd get out to pump gas and couldn't read the damn display at the pump and had to take my glasses off, except then I couldn't see so I had to lean in and squint... I'm much happier just living with a little glare.

busterb 01-16-2016 04:57 PM

Well I had to return my glasses to eye DR. because the wonderful Va or someone screwed up. Anyway I looked at Wal-mart.No luck, but I did find a HD visor from the as seen junk. Best I can tell, if you have any kind of head on wreck, it'll take the top of your head OFF.
But wait, there's more. A big headed, good hearted guy from the pot hole state of PA. sent me some shades and a clip-on. I've yet to thank him. But I will.

I'm guessing the lenses were linearly polarized. I wear only sunglasses with circular polarization with which that doesn't happen. The illumination level through the lenses remains constant with changing viewing angle. They're also photochromic (lighten and darken automatically).

No thanks necessary, brother b. I'm still wearing my tequila shirt. We're all square in my book. I hope they work out.

Spexxvet 01-30-2016 08:20 AM

How are they working for you, Buster?

busterb 02-03-2016 08:51 PM

Well the as seen junk is about like all of that crap. I've not been out at night, so don't know
about the shades LJ sent or the night time part of the junk.
