Savages
In 1886 General miles rounded up the Chiricahua Apaches and shipped them off to jail at Fort Marion, Florida.
But what to do with the savage children? Ship them to the Carlisle, PA, Indian school for civilizing. http://cellar.org/2015/apache1.jpg A hundred or so died of civilized diseases, and got a civilized burial in Carlisle. But the survivors got civilized and you can see how much happier they are. http://cellar.org/2015/apache2.jpg |
Yep. The gooberment was at work back then.

Devastating, only one zipperhead left.

The real savage is named right after the date in the OP.

There are still lawsuits going on in Canada when they did the same thing. The final school closed in 1984.
edit: Though this source says they lasted into the '90s. |
The same happened all over the world with indigenous people. In England's memory it was Maori (New Zealand) and Aboriginal (Australian) children who needed to be taken into good, clean, white houses to be all civilised up and learn how not to respect the land.
Not that there was a colour-bar on deciding what children had to have done to them. Even the working poor could have their children shipped off for an unasked for jaunt to Australia/ NZ/ Canada/ South Africa (the so called "Home Children"). Facing a horrendously long sea voyage, to be greeted by strangers and kiddie-fiddlers and worked half to death. No, of course that wasn't the case for every little emigree, but talk about your disposable culture - we had plenty of kids to give away back then. A righteous god in a novel would have been all smitey and said we didn't deserve any more until we learned their value. |
In todays sensibilities it seems barbaric, but to be fair, what were they to do with these kids? The entire band of Chiricahua Apaches were imprisoned in Florida, should they lock up the kids too? I'm sure the Carlisle School sounded like a God send to the people who had to find a solution.
Plus it had been a long bloody struggle between the Indians and Settlers, and this marked the end. But much like the Israelis and Palestinians the butt hurt was deep. I'm sure the do gooders thought civilizing these kids would prevent future problems for the Indians and for themselves. I think it's remarkable the whole band wasn't exterminated. |
Paraphrasing 'Blazing Saddles':
Watch that "savages" shit, paleface. |
Not entirely sure of Bruce's tone for this whole post. I'm not sure if it's intended to be humor (I hope it is), but, to reduce what white people did to Native Americans to "butthurt" is an insensitivity of historical proportions.

You seem to forget the Indians did some pretty horrific things themselves, even to each other, but after 300 years they were out-numbered, out-scienced, and out-gunned, in the end. Had it been the other way around, the men/old women would have been killed, and the young women/children taken as slaves.
Butt hurt is not what was done by the Indians/Settlers/Israelis/Palestinians, it's the resulting animosity/resentment/hate, generations later. |
There is an old saying along the lines of:
"Until the lions learn to write, history will be written by the hunters." There is a lot of similarities between the "Indian Wars" and current events.... savages vs defenders massacre vs battle prisoners of war vs reservation ISSA vs Mujahideen Quantanamo vs Fort Sill archeology vs grave robbing This video is the lion's POV... Just as the Civil Rights Laws were one good thing done by Richard Nixon, signing the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act was one good thing done by George W. Bush. |

Where does that come from ? |
From the end of every TV commercial for abused animals, wounded warriors, starving third word children, et al.

Paraphrasing "History of the World, Part 1"
"It's good to be the king." And by king, I mean the White Man. |
Yes, and if Cochise had become King, history would be different.

He said on Geronimo's birthday.

Kicked his ass too. :p:

Here's one of those savages, probably weaving that robe to smother white babies with.

Poor Jane McCrea went to pieces... chopped to pieces, in 1777 by savages employed by England.
Turns out she was engaged to a loyalist, which undermined the British claim they were in control, as well as the promise to protect loyalists. Of course it pissed off the patriots having British employees running around yelling, where the white women at? You can see the cell phone picture quality varied quite a bit back then. |
It doesn't look like her portrait is going to make it onto the $10 bill redesign in 2020 now does it.

A candid shot of a savage attacking Whitesboro, New York.

Now if the Indians had a strong anti-immigration policy, North America would look something like this.

I don't understand... it says you and I live in Powhatan when we clearly live in Lenapehoking...
|
NSFW language |
The question is, the area was called Lenapehoking by whom? Your link says by the Lenape because they considered the tribes in that area bros. However when the Lenape bitched about the deal with Willy Penn, they appealed to the Iroquois confederacy who claimed hegemony over most of that area, including where you live.
Two problems. One ~ the confusion between what the natives called themselves, what other tribes called them, and what Europeans called them. Two ~ the Indian culture was not land ownership as we know it, but the right to hunt/fish/gather and temporarily camp in the area, meaning fuzzy boundaries. The author of the projected 2015 map assumes by now the boundaries would be firm like we know it. He chose Powhatan, as they were the most powerful tribe on the eastern seaboard, and projected the area would be consolidated under their name. But who knows, it could be Zapataland |
