World Cup Brasil

Starts today! I get interested in soccer every four years, like clockwork. Actually I don't get overly interested in clockwork but it can fascinate. Anyway we appear to have a pretty good young club and a damn fine coach let's see if we can avoid another Ghana mistake.

Selfies in Rio, stunning Brazilian women, food oddities, politics, the amazon, environmental and economic issues I would welcome anything of casual interest drift to your hearts content.

Go Germany

Sundae 06-12-2014 08:39 AM

Lousy timing for our first game. 23.00 KO on Saturday 14 against Italy.
I daydreamed about going to watch it in a pub, even though I knew it wasn't a great idea.

But after all it's just too late. I'd have to be there by 21.00 latest to get a seat. A seat I would no doubt lose any time I needed to go for a wee or go to the bar. A seat which would be useless during the match anyway as everyone else jumped to their feet. Altogether too expensive, too tempting.
I will stay at home, go to bed early with the radio on and set my alarm to wake up for the kickoff.

I'm not working on Sunday, so whether I stay awake or not is up to me.

Going to listen to the first match tonight though.
Just to hear whether the stadium holds up!
No, not really. To hear whether the pressure Brazil have been under works in their favour against Croatia.

Goldman Sachs has it all figured out.

Well! Who'd'a'thunk the Dutch would put five past Spain?

Sundae 06-14-2014 05:18 AM

I was listening to it. Wished I'd been able to watch, great game.

The jury is still out re me watching the game tonight. I checked out the Rose & Crown the other day; older clientele, reasonably priced soft drinks, not a Big Screen TV Pub, but that might work in my favour. The locals might all be in bed :)

Truth is, I probably will be too, with the radio on.
But having found this place I am allowing there is an option.

(I still believe, I still believe
It's coming home it's coming home, it's coming
Football's coming home)

The funny part is the after the fact articles. Apparently everyone saw that coming. :eyebrow:

limey 06-14-2014 04:52 PM

And what about Costa Rica putting one over on Uruguay!

I am pulling for Argentina. After watching the Premier League this year, I'm convinced Brits don't know how to play soccer.

Shush. We play football, and we play it very well thank you.
Even last night when we lost :mecry:

I never expected England to win over Italy, never went out thinking I would walk home in triumph. But the equaliser came so quickly and we were playing so well.
We dominated that game.
It just felt so unfair to lose.

I did go out to watch it.
And the pub was damn near empty at the start of the match. But by half time it was filling up with late 20s early 30s lasses in little dresses asking about the karaoke. Seems that it's a regular late night haunt, which I really did not expect. I was there, sober and soberly attired in a black cotton jersey top and dark denim skirt. Mutton dressed as mutton.

Glad I got to watch the game though, despite not being surrounded by other fans.
Swings and roundabouts, I had a seat, a great view of the tv and was right next to the Ladies (which was clean).
Oh and I got a free bacon bap out of it, although the less said about that the better :yelsick:

Sundae 06-15-2014 12:05 AM

The shush was to Sarge btw.
Not Bruce.

That's really cool!
It's like my milkshake bringing all the boys to the yard...

nice. I like winning

glatt 06-16-2014 07:02 PM

No cable in the glatt house, so we watched in Spanish. Yay, Univision! Somehow feels more authentic watching in a foreign language.

Griff 06-16-2014 07:04 PM

I found that and BBC and ESPN, but they all suck quality due to my 18th century internet.

lumberjim 06-16-2014 07:05 PM

yeah. when you don't understand what the fuck they are doing with all that passing, and offsides and yellow cards, and falling down dead, you might as well not be able to understand the mooks broadcasting it.

we all understand GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLL

What World Cup?
There isn't one for another four years, sorry.

xoxoxoBruce 06-23-2014 12:03 PM

For you, the rest of the world, not so much. :p:

Stadium stairs do the Macarena.

Griff 06-23-2014 03:50 PM

It would appear the American team is truly in the shit now.

Sundae 06-23-2014 04:32 PM

I'ma still listening to the World Cup on the radio (not having a tv)
I just won't go out to watch it anywhere I have to pay for drinks/ food etc after tomorrow.

Bumped into the landlady of the Rose & Crown on Sunday.
I've been the only person who has come in to watch both England matches, although there have been others at either one.
She asked if I'd be in on Tuesday and I felt oddly loyal to her. She's provided food for a non-existant surge in trading each time.

I expect she won't bother on Tuesday!

Undertoad 06-24-2014 03:37 AM

You have a USA team to begin supporting at any time now.

Griff 06-27-2014 05:40 AM

We're in the knockout round!

Smithsonian American Art Museum is getting ready for the game. Nice location to show it. A cavernous space that's air conditioned.

Glatt, that's a gorge space to watch the footie!
Wish I was there. And that England had done as well as the US in this World Cup (even if I don't know the outcome of the USA-Belgium game writing this)

Please remember that English humour is oh so very highbrow and not everyone gets it.
It's not sillyness and sniggering at things which aren't really all that funny.

But anyway, we invented football so here is how it is supposed to be played.

Ste and I still reference Charles "Charlie" Charles (one of the famous Charles brothers) from time to time.

Griff 07-01-2014 09:00 PM

Howard was so good. Nice run 'merica.

That's why we don't need no buildn spectrs here in murca:bolt:

US vs Belgium was exciting. I admit after Belgium scored its second goal, I started cooking dinner. I turned it back on to see that US had scored! Watched the rest. It was an exciting game, lots of scoring chances, but it was obvious that the US didn't have the mad skillz (except for Howard).

limey 07-02-2014 08:28 AM

You guys done good. Yeah, Tim Howard is a big plus for the team, but your guys' tenacity, and the extra legs they all grew in extra time, were very very impressive.

glatt 07-02-2014 08:43 AM

If they could have kept it tied, I bet we would have won with the kicks. Howard was that good.

Belgium played incredibly well though. No surprise that they won.

Yesterday at work, there was a pause in email traffic during the game. It matched up perfectly with the start of the game, the break after regular play and before overtime, and when the game finished. Maybe it's just coincidence, but it matched the game schedule perfectly.

Griff 07-05-2014 09:21 AM

Brasil 2 Colombia 1

Any conceits that America has closed the skills gap are gone. Colombia, especially James, played a beautiful, dangerous, wide open game Brasil looked a little tight at times but did the job. Klinsmann had our side playing an appropriate games for what we can do. We can't do what either of those teams can do. Now it is Germany v Brasil a contrast in styles that often leads commentators into the dangerous land of culture and race. Who will get fired at ESPN? :)

Griff 07-09-2014 05:58 AM

"You see your bergermeister paired his most conscientious organized Germanic male with his sturdiest most intelligent order following female to create a super-man in you will." - the ghost of Jimmy the Greek

That game was a show of horrors for Brazil. Its amazing how we ended up with the 4 old time futbol powers after all that play. This could have been the final four almost any year.

If it's 12:53 in Belo Horizonte, what time is it in Germany?

7 to 1. ;)

That was a fucking thrashing yesterday...just a merciless beating. And we only lost to Germany 1-0.

Griff 07-09-2014 05:52 PM

Netherlands out. Tough tough match setting up a very familiar final.
