Down here at Tweakerville

Oh boy do I have a sequel coming up for you all.

Hopefully a mini-series sequel

lumberjim 05-09-2014 06:29 PM

I like the smell of this.

sexobon 05-09-2014 09:52 PM

Sounds like it could be aromarriffic.

Undertoad 05-16-2014 08:07 PM

This story is ready. It is about the length of a longer magazine article.

To gain access to it send me a P.M. You must promise to never link this story to anywhere on the Internet.

Thank you in advance.

Nirvana 05-16-2014 09:37 PM

:3_eyes:

glatt 05-17-2014 06:30 AM

That was good. Thanks for sharing it. It's too bad you have to keep these stories secret. I could see that being published in a writing journal or something. It's better than some stories I've read in the Washington Post Magazine.

Undertoad 05-17-2014 08:09 AM

It has the advantage, over the WaPo, of being 100% true... only the names have been changed

Griff 05-17-2014 10:21 AM

I'd probably would have left at lunch day 1. Nice writing bro.

Undertoad 05-17-2014 11:15 AM

I must add, it's okay to talk about the story here. I'm sure the general details won't matter so much, since the names have been changed.

Undertoad 05-17-2014 11:16 AM

Also, thanks you guys!

lumberjim 05-17-2014 05:02 PM

Has American pickers been to see the collection?

monster 05-17-2014 05:37 PM

WaPo = Water Polo. Just sayin' I was all excited for a mo.... ;)

glatt 05-17-2014 06:59 PM

When I first saw the pictures and hadn't read the text yet, I was all excited like it was a treasure trove. But Tweaker sounds like he's not letting anything go for cheap.

Undertoad 05-17-2014 11:18 PM

No.. one thing I didn't put in the story (aside from the dogs) was that Andy had this annoying practice of doing an eBay search, clicking on Sold Listings, and then sorting from highest to lowest, and assuming the highest price he saw was a price that he would get.

One should actually click on Completed Listings, because then you'll see all the prices that things DIDN'T sell at, which is a bigger clue. And then you also have to assess your item fairly because small differences are important to collectors.

So he is pricing things way too high and getting nothing

I don't expect there will be a Roadshow Antiques moment where someone tells him one of his pieces of shit is worth $20,000.

Big Sarge 05-18-2014 07:40 AM

i'm interested in reading the story

Undertoad 05-18-2014 08:13 AM

OK let's do it this way

go to cellar.org/tweak

username: ut

password: ut

The point here is mostly to keep it out of Google and out of the Internet Archives. Do not copy the story. Thank you.

Big Sarge 05-18-2014 11:24 AM

he has a lot of things I would love to buy. I'm just glad you got out alive

sexobon 05-18-2014 12:18 PM

UT, in contrast, what percentage of those stored items might the pawn shop have been interested in (rough guess)?

I get the feeling that somebody's last words are going to be a variation on: "This is The Big One, Elizabeth! I'm coming to join ya honey."

Good short story.

Sundae 05-18-2014 12:32 PM

Just had a chance to read it UT.
You should write for us more, you do it so well.

Crazy times indeed.

There is nearly zero overlay!

The pawn shop will only take in things that have a predictable eBay value. The pawn shop needs a model number and a few eBay sales to show it can be sold again, with zero risk. So it does not deal in antiques.

Andy will only take things in that he secretly thinks have value. He doesn't bother checking eBay values of stuff. Sometimes he's right, other times he's wrong. It's not a good system, but there are a few things he actually knows about.

For instance, he has worked out that old gas cans sell for unexpectedly high numbers, and whenever he sees one, he grabs it up. (It's because the new gas cans suck.)

He knows that there are certain sets of Ghostbusters action figures that will fetch really big bucks. After my time there, he now knows that there's also a set that fetches nothing, and he's stuck with a bunch from that era.

Gravdigr 05-19-2014 03:36 AM

That was a pretty good read, Mr. Toad. Well done.

Spexxvet 05-19-2014 08:49 AM

Great read, UT. You should go pro.

Undertoad 05-19-2014 08:54 AM

Thank you muchly. (But t'ain't no money in it)

BigV 05-19-2014 11:34 AM

You've a talent for storytelling UT. Thanks for letting me read it.

limey 05-19-2014 05:48 PM

Great story! Thank you!

I think the story is entirely lacking in closure.

lumberjim 05-19-2014 08:02 PM

It's a good tale and well written of course, but you left his employ before anything good happened!

xoxoxoBruce 05-20-2014 12:45 AM

Bravo! Author! Wonderful!
Hey, wait a minute, that's all true.
Fuck, that's scary.

Lola Bunny 05-20-2014 10:35 AM

Did you precede it with www.

Lola Bunny 05-20-2014 11:21 AM

Yes, I did. When that didn't work, I tried it without. So I tried both.

You're trying to connect to port 443, which means you're trying to do https: to the Cellar. We don't support that, it's just http:

Lola Bunny 05-20-2014 01:15 PM

Got in! Thanks!

fargon 05-20-2014 01:50 PM

UT that was well written, you should write more.

DanaC 05-20-2014 01:56 PM

Very entertaining.

Undertoad 05-24-2014 06:49 AM

He promised me he'd pay my last week of work on Wednesday.

Normally it's Friday.

Wednesday and Friday have now come and gone and I see that his eBay listings are not getting him the values he believes in for his stuff.

I think I will not be paid for my time there.

But one way of getting paid would be to offer the above piece for publication. I expect it may fetch into the hundreds of dollars, like maybe four or five. That's about what I'm owed in total.

xoxoxoBruce 05-24-2014 09:23 AM

At those prices you could make a tidy living writing about your love sex life. You know, all those dot org groupies stalking you day and night, having to remember to close the bathroom curtains, never getting enough rest... ;)

Flint 06-03-2014 01:27 AM

You have a good voice. Very engaging. I've always enjoyed that, exposition through sideways glances. It invites the reader in.
