I think we can all agree that honeydew is the lowest of the low, and is nothing but filler in the fruit salads of life.

Clodfobble 08-12-2013 06:16 PM

AMEN! Honeydew is not even a fruit, as far as I'm concerned. I'd rather eat vegetables.

Grape, peach, and mango also have no place on my hierarchy.

orthodoc 08-12-2013 06:29 PM

Agree! Honeydew, bleh!

But where are the raspberries? Won't somebody think of the raspberries? They should be #2, right after blueberries. And very closely followed by peaches. Then apples, and ... everything except melons.

Chocolatl 08-12-2013 07:05 PM

And no love for the humble lemon?

lumberjim 08-12-2013 07:14 PM

Ever try salt on your honeydew?

Yummy

The concord grape is the noblest of fruits.

Undertoad 08-12-2013 07:28 PM

Honeydew, the name makes it sound better than it is. Pomegranate needs marketing assistance. Terrible name.

Undertoad 08-12-2013 07:28 PM

In fact if you put honey and dew on honeydew it would improve it.

xoxoxoBruce 08-12-2013 07:52 PM

Ripe Honeydew is pure ambrosia. Unfortunately the Honeydew passes from under ripe to rotten in minutes, always in the dark, always while you sleep.

Blueberries are NASTY unless picked wild in the UP of Michigan. Those Incredibly hulking Impostors in the stores should be forced to take another name. Like Yuckberries.

Raspberries
Lemons
Oranges
Grapefruit
Kiwifruit
Clementines
Plums
Pineapple
Grapes

We have excellent wild blueberries here as well. I have tame bushes that are way better than those oversize suckers. I think the blueberry breeders almost screwed up as badly as the strawberry folks. Wild strawberries are absolute dynamite. We're lucky with berries because Danny Wegman's buyers do a particularly good job keeping the right varieties on the shelf.

orthodoc 08-13-2013 06:50 AM

Northern Ontario wild blueberries are the best - I have memories of visiting relatives on the aptly-named Blueberry Island and all of us kids being able to gorge ourselves on the incredibly delicious berries. Now you need to take out a mortgage to buy a decent-sized basket from a roadside stand.

Sorry guys. Your blueberries all suck. Wild blueberries from Maine are the best. Bar none. :p:

They write award winning books about them.

And apples is a difficult category to place in the ranks. There are apples and then there are apples. An apple can absolutely suck (red delicious comes to mind) or be nothing special (macintosh) or be outstanding (a nice crisp fresh gala.) The age and variety make a HUGE difference.

glatt's list

1 - blueberries
2 - good apple
3 - raspberry
4 - peach
5 - grapes (again, there are good grapes and sour grapes)
6 - oranges
7 - pear (difficult to find a good one, but when they are good, they are great)
8 - banana
9 - strawberry (not one of those frankenberry ones)
10 - durian

Gravdigr 08-13-2013 09:42 AM

The blueberry has surpassed the peach in Georgia, The Peach State.

1 Blueberry
2 Strawberry
3 Grape/Banana (a tie)
4 Red Delicious Apple
5 Plum
6 Cantaloupe
7 Peach
8 Cuties / Clementines
9 Kiwi
10 Other Apples

Undertoad 08-13-2013 09:55 AM

Well the whole good versus bad thing is part of it. I like bananas okay, but they are all cloned, so they are all pretty much identical. They're all a 7. If they had decided to vary, then you could find some that were a 10, but no. Unlike the strawberry, which ranges from 1 to 10.

Durian?! Eeeewwwww.

glatt 08-13-2013 10:30 AM

that one was a joke. I've never had durian.

:D Nope, I just love the little red devils.

Popdigr is a Fuji man.

Sundae 08-13-2013 11:37 AM

Gosh, I barely rank any of those fruits!

1. Cherry
2. Braeburn apple
3. British strawberry
4. White seedless grape
5. Mini clementine
6. Red seedless grape
7. Pineapple
8. Fig
9. Rhubarb
10. Raspberry (last because it has to be with something - too sharp to eat alone)

glatt 08-13-2013 12:37 PM

I forgot pineapple! That goes up near the top.

Clodfobble 08-13-2013 12:59 PM

Grilled pineapple is like my top food ever, not just in the fruits category.

jimhelm 08-13-2013 01:16 PM

they have that at Wegmans. omgomgomg. its orgasmic

Sundae 08-13-2013 01:28 PM

If it was freshly picked pineapple, I'd probably have it 3rd on my list.
Had it every day in Sri Lanka and it exploded in my mouth (not literally)
But our pineapple is harvested earlier to arrive in the UK as nearly ripe.
I still enjoy it, but it's more acidic.

Specifiying "fresh Sri Lankan pineapple eaten for breakfast" would have rightfully earned me a punch on the nose.

xoxoxoBruce 08-13-2013 01:34 PM

The last time I sent my folks to Hawaii, they brought back fresh ripe pineapple. They were home about a week before I got up there, so the pineapple was dead ripe and orgasmic. Unfortunately I've never found anything close here on the mainland. :(

Sundae 08-13-2013 01:48 PM

Don't want to burst your bubble, Bruce.
But it sounds like it might have been fermented ;)

xoxoxoBruce 08-13-2013 01:53 PM

Not that far gone, but sweet as hell and not acidic.

Yeah, I was thinking that you could make it a top 20 list, and just put apples before, after, and in between the other nine fruits.

monster 08-13-2013 10:53 PM

Kenneth Williams
John Inman
Graham Norton
Julian Clary
Eddie Izzard

BigV 08-14-2013 02:30 AM

lol

Sundae 08-14-2013 08:57 AM

Eddie Izzard is the only straight man.

lumberjim 08-14-2013 09:10 AM

Inman is a great name for a fagula.

Sundae 08-14-2013 09:12 AM

Izzard is a great name for any penis-toting male ;)

so what?

Sundae 08-14-2013 11:08 AM

Was trying to make a mildly amusing connection re straight man (hetero) and straight man (comedian)
Didn't really come off.

Probably because Izzard invariably works alone. Except the updated Four Yorkshireman sketch of great repute.

BigV 08-22-2013 11:23 AM

graph the fruits

Sundae 08-22-2013 12:54 PM

Pink grapefruit. I like.
I admit it's easier as a juice though.

glatt 08-22-2013 01:00 PM

I always though grapefruit was no good, until my wife started getting crates of them shipped from Florida around Christmas. Those are absolutely awesome.

Gravdigr 08-23-2013 09:11 AM

Except with blood pressure meds.

Sundae 08-23-2013 09:21 AM

I know.
When I first bought pink grapefruit juice it was as if I'd brought home rat poison in a bottle labelled Yummy, Yummy Stuff, Get You Feeling Fizzy With No Consequences.
Mum pitched a fit. On Dad's behalf.

I actually stuck a label across the opening in case he mistook the size of the carton, and the different packaging AND the colour of the juice...
I don't have to do that any more, in the same way I don't have to label my knickers so that Dad doesn't wear them. He gets confused, but he's not a complete basket case.

I do get where Mum was coming from though.

Don't worry, all the mass-market bananas will have died off in 10 to 30 years. So eat 'em if you got 'em.

"There are some amazingly delicious bananas out there. My favorite is called the Lacatan. It's from the Philippines. And it's the — you know, banana enthusiasts, such as they are, many of them believe it's the best tasting banana in the world, and I would have to agree with that. It's got a very intense, creamy flavor. They're a red banana, and you do see some red bananas in gourmet stores here, which are related to the Lacatan. But they're quite inferior, although they're still better than Cavendish."

Spexxvet 08-26-2013 09:34 AM

Peach
Mango
Cherry
Seedless grape
Cantaloupe
Blueberry
Banana
Pineapple
Apple
Pear
Watermelon

Hold on there, Griff: you're thirty or forty years behind the times on the strawberries. Here in the heart of strawberry country, we routinely eat huge strawberries the size of a baby's fist that are packed full of flavor. It might be simply that it's short shipping distances, or it might be that the berry growers around here decided, "okay, we got size, now how about flavor?" and got flavor too.

Way back when, the bigger the blander, and the little wild ones concentrated strawberry flavor impressively -- but now you don't need to go wild-berrying to have the good stuff. I make a strawberry shortcake of the farmed stuff that will knock your socks over your back fence. Sometimes with a dollop of Mexican crema agria (like a slightly sour rather thick kefir) for a bit of adult taste. Haven't tried liqueuring the whipped cream yet...

Urbane Guerrilla 09-02-2013 09:00 PM

I don't rank fruits one over another; they are either the fruits I like, or the fruits I don't, which is a much shorter list. Hell, I see the attractions of durians. (Durian works as an ice-cream flavor.)

Melons are seeded fruits, and do have to be ripe to be fun. Canteloupe you can at least check for ripe by ear, holding it up and listening for it to slosh. Watermelon, regrettably, I got too glutted on one church picnic and now need to season either with lemon juice Russian style or with chile pepper and salt Mexican style, with or without lime juice as well. Cuts the excess of wateriness.

They don't make it here, and unfortunately those producers have such a stranglehold on the market, it's hard to find anything else.

Not unlike the roses you'll find at the floral counter adjacent to the produce section in Safeway, etc. They look uniformly gorgeous, but they could be plastic or photoshopped for that matter, as they have no smell at all.

The strawberries here also emphasize, emphasis on size, size over flavor.
