It is so hot I think I am going to throw up.

The clue is in the title.

Chocolatl 07-07-2013 05:47 PM

What's the temp up there?

orthodoc 07-07-2013 05:49 PM

Venlafaxine is excellent for hot flashes.

hot. It's cooled down to about 90. Rain is coming soon, that will help.

venalfoxine? Ordinarily I'd say yes, but it's too hot for fur.

Sundae 07-08-2013 03:23 AM

32C, hmmmm.
Not sure how hot it was yesterday but it was grim, grimmer, grimmest for heatophobes like me.
Thank goodness I'm 4 stone lighter than last year, I'm really noticing the difference.

Oh, turns out it was about 24 here. That's only 75F!!!
Yup, I'd be sick at 32, too.
Going up to 26 today (79F). And at present there's no wind :greenface

Chocolatl 07-08-2013 09:30 AM

75F is HEAVEN!

Forecast to be 95F/35C here today.

BigV 07-08-2013 09:13 PM

was around 80F today, and that made hot sweaty work of weeding, chipping, and mulching. I quit for the day goddammit.

Clodfobble 07-08-2013 09:50 PM

You have to remember though Choco, BigV lives in Seattle where most places have no air conditioning (at least they didn't back when I visited in the early nineties.)

But still... we keep our house at 78 in the summer, V. :)

BigV 07-08-2013 09:53 PM

I have a box fan, two window fans and a ceiling fan.

And a freezer full of ice and icy treats. 80 F is hot, 107 is the all time gone to hell and caught fire high. I don't actually know anyone who owns an air conditioner that isn't built into a car.

limegreenc 07-17-2013 09:45 PM

why it's so hot that...

A friend of mine said that he'd left 2 of the new polymer $20 Cdn bills in his cars glove box today, and they melted together. is that even possible?

Sundae 07-18-2013 12:44 PM

We're having a horrible heatwave here.
It has been up to 32 now (90), although I accept that Foot posted it was 90 when the temp came down :thepain:.

I start my training on Monday, and my full job on Thursday 8 August. Weather predictions are that this record-breaking run of heat will not be done by then.
My uniform is long sleeved shirt (although it can be fastened to short sleeve that means doubling the material), apron and trousers, full cover shoes. Okay I'll be working in air conditioned stores, but getting there and getting back is gonna be sweaty.

The good thing is once I start, I have three days a week from 06.30. Probably the coollest time of day.
The bad thing is, it's so freaking hot at night I can barely sleep, passing into a stupor at about 03.30 only to have Diz jump on my head at 04.45.

All I can hope is that I'll be so knackered with my new schedule, I'll pass out sparko whatever the heat. I don't hold much hope for this idea though, I've had trouble sleeping all my life and even as an active child I couldn't sleep in the heat.

Sigh.

The media are bored with saying how hot it is. They've moved onto saying, "Oh people are complaining about the heat, some people are never happy!" Yes. Yes I am. I love the Autumn and Winter and early Spring. The only reason I moan then is because other people turn the heating up. Give me a cold place and an extra pair of socks.

Big Sarge 07-18-2013 12:47 PM

We move to the ranges again tomorrow morning. Oh what fun we shall have. LOL

DanaC 07-19-2013 08:13 AM

The thing to remember about heat over here, aside from the fact we're just not used to it as a nation and therefore most homes and even businesses don't have air conditioning, is that it is a very humid heat.

I remember going to the south of France when I was a kid, when they were in the middle of a really bad drought. It was baking hot, but it didn't make me feel ill like it did/does here when it gets hot.

I went to the bakery around 12:30 and it was just too much. Had to spy my moment when there was a bit of a breeze to take Carrotchops out. Poor lamb. Even with his fur shaved almost to the skin, he's still too hot.

The electric fan has been pulling double shifts and I've been moving it around from room to room as I go :P

I did have a few really bad days eczema-wise from the heat, but *touch wood* it seems not to be building to anything nasty. Hopefully. I mainly stay indoors with the window open and the fan going, other than the obligatory dog walks, shop trips and the *coughs* FOUR FUCKING HOURS spent on superheated buses yesterday going to and from the dentists in Leeds.

Someone asked me how I was the other day. I said, I'm fine....too hot though :p They're like: can't complain about the heat now, not after the winter we've just had.

I thought....yeah, ok, but it's really no fun for the likes of me :p Until evening. Late evening, when the temperature drops a touch, but it's still light in the sky and there's a barbeque on the go, or I'm strolling quietly round the village with mah homedog. That's lovely.

Getting up at the crack of dawn to walk Carrot before the heat sets, in not so much.

The heatwave warning has been raised to "level three" by the Met Office for north-west England.

It said the hottest weather was expected over western England on Friday, with the east becoming cooler.

Level three warnings are in place for the South West and the West Midlands, but warnings for south-east England and London have been reduced to level two.

The warning alerts healthcare services to help those in high-risk groups such as the elderly and young children.
Quote:

Level three alerts are triggered when threshold temperatures have been reached for one day and the following night, and the forecast for the next day has a greater than 90% confidence level that the day threshold temperature will again be met.

The threshold temperature for north-west England is 30C (86F)
Quote:

It is the UK's first prolonged heatwave since 2006, with six consecutive days of temperatures above 30C (86F).

Research by the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine has estimated there might have been between 540 and 760 extra deaths in England and 60 to 100 in Wales due to the hot weather.

Wednesday was the hottest day of the year, with 32.2C (89.9F) recorded at Hampton in south-west London.

See: first time since 2006 that we've had more than 6 consecutive days above 86f. So, little need as a country to gear up for serious heat on the whole. Therefore when it does hit us, it hits hard. We just don't have the responses to it that would allow us to cope comfortably. A possible death toll of 900 people in the UK across 6 days of temperatures that hotter countries take in their stride.

The heat index is a way to account for this combination of heat and humidity.

In Fahrenheit

In Metric

According to Wunderground, right now in London, it's the early afternoon, and the temperature is 82 degrees F and the heat index is 82 degrees F. In Arlington VA right now, it's mid morning and the temperature is 87 degrees F and the heat index is 100 degrees F.

Admittedly, I'm sitting in air conditioning right now, but my morning commute was pretty gross, walking to the subway station.

jimhelm 07-19-2013 11:39 AM

well, it FEELS like 112 to me!

gah... I wish I had a pool

Griff 07-19-2013 12:35 PM

89 F feels like 99 F at the school today... but I'm only working mornings so I left before it got hot. Sposed to reach 95 add in your heat index. <ouch>

orthodoc 07-19-2013 12:36 PM

It is so hot here in M'town that I think I am going to throw up. Just came back from an 80's themed hospital picnic. Even the ice cream was hot.

Super rough when you're not used to, and don't have AC.

The neighbor asked if I wanted to take the kids to the (shadeless) playground at 2 today. I politely declined, pointing out the heat index was 105F. Lady, you just had skin cancer removed this spring -- 2 in the afternoon, no shade? Are you nuts? And you want to take babies out in that?

BigV 07-19-2013 04:07 PM

nutz, for sure.

An unusual weather pattern is in place over Australia.

Attachment 44855

There is a low near Tasmania, and a high south of Perth. Remember that in the southern hemisphere, winds go clockwise around a low and anticlockwise around a high. As a result, a big pool of very cold moist air is being swept up from the Southern Ocean and blasted over Southern Australia.

So we're having a top of 11 degrees centigrade, showers, small hail, and a chance of snow in the Mt Lofty ranges near the city. Although right now it is sunny outside.

limegreenc 07-19-2013 07:48 PM

cold front hits warm front

Just had one hell of a storm. threats of tornados in our area all afternoon. wind gusting to 120 mph. temp went from 112 degrees to 68 in less than an hour. light show fantastic. beautiful sunset. s'pose we'll be in our long pants tomorrow

BigV 07-19-2013 07:56 PM

footfootfoot 07-20-2013 10:52 AM

We had a very brief, intensely windy spell last night, and a minute bit of rain.

Today things are a bit more reasonable.

DanaC 07-20-2013 11:00 AM

So much cooler today! Lovely. Warm enough not to need a coat, but not so warm i have to hide indoors. Perfect.

Apparently the heat will be building back up in next couple days so im enjoying this whilst i can:)

Nirvana 07-20-2013 11:50 AM

For 3 days here the heat index was somewhere between OMG and WTF!

glatt 07-20-2013 11:55 AM

We were supposed to be getting thunderstorms and relief today. Where is it?

Undertoad 07-20-2013 12:24 PM

Western Maryland and Ohio, and headed our way by evening.

ZenGum 07-20-2013 07:37 PM

I got some small hail at my place, and there was patchy snow on the ground on Mt Lofty.
