Another cell phone thread

I have seriously fallen out of love with my motorola photon. I have 29 days until I am eligible to re up my sprint contract and get a new phone.

I'm thinking samsung galaxy s4. But then theres the htc 1. Or maybe the note2. Does anyone have any of these particular phones...or want to add one for consideration?

limey 06-02-2013 11:28 AM

I've got an S3 and Mr Limey has a note (old model).
We LUVS them.
Whaddaya wanna know?

Clodfobble 06-02-2013 11:43 AM

I love my HTC One. I have never loved a phone before. Mr. Clod has some kind of Samsung, and every time I have to use it I am reminded how I love my phone so much more than his.

glatt 06-02-2013 12:19 PM

I love my iPhone 4S. It's better than any phone I've ever had, and work pays for it. So that's enough for me, even if there are better phones out there.

I think some phones are getting ridiculously large, but your opinion may vary, or your pockets may be larger than mine.

The reviews rave bout the music apps and speakers. Also the metal construction. Negatives are.... No removeable memory, you cant pull the battery, and one reviewer complained about the reception for phone calls.

The things that make me nuts(bad nuts) about my motorola:

1. When the screen gets colder than about 65 deg, it becomes laggy, and unresponsive. Like it thinks you are long pressing, or just ignores you.

2. If i have wifi enabled, and signal strength is poor, i get no connectivity even by 3G. I have to disable wifi to get any data connection.

3. Every once in a while, (like maybe every 9 or 10 days) it stops receiving texts.... Or sending mine....like its clogged up or some shit... It usually takes me half a day to realize its happening again, so i restart and then i get 4to 6 copies of all the texts i missed.

4. The phone has a kickstand, which would be cool if the fucking charger aperature werent on the side that becomes the botom with it deployed. Stupid.

5. Reception is worse than on previous phones ive had with sprint.

So I'd like to avoid those issues on my next phone, improve battery life, and camera quality. I like the larger note 2, but dont know if that bigger size would be inconvenient in ways i have not ecountered yet. Like, would it fit into my windscreen pouch on the motorcycle ok, or shirt pocket ....

The galaxy s4 is said to be borderline too light. My phone weighs a ton, and i dislike that about it.
Other factors...
This month, the samsung s4 is $149, the htc is $99, and the note is free.

Just placed the order for my Nexus 4. I was searching for a decent phone from last couple of months and sheer amount of sets they are rolling out in the market successfully messed up my mindset (if I had any to start with).
Didn't want to spend fortune over a gadget that will be getting outdated within a year or so anyway. So went with gut feeling and purchased Nexus on instinct. Any one out there using it already?
I hope I didn't end being poorer for something stupid.

Crimson Ghost 06-02-2013 03:28 PM

The Nexus 6 is being developed by Tyrell Corp.
Let's see how well it does.

jimhelm 06-02-2013 03:32 PM

This is gonna be tough to decide.

zippyt 06-02-2013 04:23 PM

Phlghty has a note 2 and loves it ,
i have a tablet , and it ROCKS !!!

Undertoad 06-02-2013 05:50 PM

My Sammy Galaxy Nexus is still hanging in there. I do like the Nexus concept where Google can just release Android phones and tablets without any further vendor stuff.

wanderer 06-03-2013 01:12 AM

Yeah, that was the primary reason I went for Nexus. And its easily available for unlocked version at low cost. Big thing that it doesn't seem too pretentious but just a device enough for job required. That will do fo me.

jimhelm 06-03-2013 02:49 PM

ok,
I've watched 4 or 5 different comparison videos on you toob, and they all end in ties.

The one guy gave a slight nod to the S4 because if he had to choose, that's what he would go with.

I think I'm gonna go Samsung because of the removable memory and battery. If it had speakers in the front, and the camera the HTC has it would be a lot easier to choose.

The HTC seems more like an iPhone.

limey 06-04-2013 04:08 AM

The camera in my S3 is no slouch ...

jimhelm 06-04-2013 09:23 AM

My kids both have galaxy s2 epics, and tell me they will be going with the s4 when they upgrade. Apparently you can sync up to 7 s4 phones and play music in 7.1 surround sound. it would be cool to set them all up at a party.

I also like the picture in picture thing with the front and rear facing cameras. That would be great for rfn pictures.

jimhelm 06-05-2013 09:24 PM

So, today I went to the sprint store and played with them. The s4 is decidedly quicker. Might have just been the floor models, but it loads web pages faster. It's lighter, but feels solid.

Now I have to wait. I tried getting bumped up, but they wanted an extra $100..... AND! The $149 price is only for new customers. I have to pay $249 for the phone . I might switch to T-Mobile.

bbro 06-11-2013 09:46 AM

I am doing this stuff now. I want a galaxy, but I am waffling more on the plans. Virgin gives all unlimited for 55. Verizon just offered me unlimited voice and text +2gb for 60. I don't think I will use the data that much. Maybe just checking email or the occasional search, but I don't know if 2gb is a lot or not.

I have been with verizon for over 10 years and I trust its reliability. I can be somewhere that I am the only person with signal. Lots of phones don't have service in rural WV and that is where my dad works. Plus, when I fix up the car, I will probably be driving through the boonies.

I hate making decisions like this. :|

glatt 06-11-2013 09:51 AM

Reading this thread convinces me that I won't be buying Apple stock any time soon.

bbro 06-11-2013 10:23 AM

UGH! If I stick with Verizon, I have to sign another 2yr contract or pay full (insane) price for a new phone.

Glatt - serious Applers will always and only buy iPhones. I had a co-worker who bought the iPhone 5 just because it was new. Her iPhone 4 wasn't even a year old

Undertoad 06-11-2013 12:55 PM

Nobody is buying Apple stock right now. Which means: time to buy.

Yesterday was an big Apple developers conference and the tech press seems to think they have announced nothing particularly special and so their stock dropped again. It's 40% off their peak price.

Nobody seems to have noticed that a version of iOS to run in cars could easily be the next big thing...

Perry Winkle 06-11-2013 02:19 PM

I think Apple is legitimately off their peak. I don't think there will be much profit in iOS for automobiles. Developers are starting to leak away toward Linux (some of us just returning home).

Seems to me that developer interest has been a leading indicator of Apple's health at least twice in its existence.

glatt 06-11-2013 02:27 PM

Did I mention that my brother used to work for Apple and now works with the iPod and iPhone inventor making thermostats at Nest? ;)

You missing the oppurtunity a few months ago. Apple had dropped to a very key number: a P/E ratio of nine. Now it is up so much as to be a P/E ratio of 11.

The 'next big' product that so many expect include the cell phone watch and interactive TV. Nobody is talking. Curiously, nobody is even discussing what we might expect.

Meanwhile, Google is doing to Apple today what Microsoft/Intel/Compaq did to Apple 30 years ago. Another example of why we must learn from history. Since many do not learn or forget history, then the same mistakes are made again 30 years later.

I've heard some people talking about this, and I just can't see it catching on. It's like bluetooth earpieces, the ideal product may make sense but the reality is that people just look like dorks wearing them. It'll be too big to be subtle and yet not big enough to accomplish anything with it.

glatt 06-12-2013 11:40 AM

especially women. Men's watches are larger, and some men really like a big masculine looking hunk of metal on their wrist. But women's fashions seem to go the opposite direction with watches that are so small you can't easily read them. I can't imagine many women wanting a watch phone larger than a quarter.

Pete Zicato 06-12-2013 11:42 AM

I have the LG Bluetooth headphones. Very nice sound and don't look any worse than other headphones.

Perry Winkle 06-12-2013 03:19 PM

In 10-15 years "cell phones" will be a subcutaneous implant, probably in/near the ear canal (or with a "speaker" that directs sound there). 5-10 years later it'll interface directly to your brain and nobody will speak anymore.

Perry Winkle 06-12-2013 03:19 PM

"Your cell phone bulge is so big, why don't you get the new Microogle iePhone?"

Sure, I don't mean headphones for listening to music. I mean those things that hook over one ear for making phone calls, and if you're turned the wrong way no one can figure out why you're having a full-volume conversation with yourself.

zippyt 06-12-2013 10:19 PM

Those little bluetooth ear pieces are irradiating when you are talking to some body and they just turn away and start gabbing , But Verry handy when you are working on some thing and need to call tech support

Watches are bigger now, both for men AND women. I see more big watches than small for women. While I prefer more of a moderate size watch, my mom and my sister prefer the bigger size.

For me, dependability of signal is important. That's what I stayed with Verizon for many years until of certain circumstances made me switch to AT&T. If you'd like to have cell signal driving through the boonies, then just stick with Verizon. A 2 yr contract is no big deal. Before you know it, you've signed contract with them a few more times. I'm getting 450 mins of voice, 1000 text, and 2G of data for $90. Yeah, your $60 sounds pretty good to me. I'm usually surrounded by Wifi so I hardly use my data. 2G is more than enough for me. Just a funny story. Verizon has been the most reliable for me in the past years. However when I was up in the mountain in New York a few years back, I was the only one with cell phone service and I was using At&T back then. Other Verizon users had no bar. :p:

jimhelm 06-13-2013 10:50 PM

I borrowed a friends note 2. This phone is SO cool. It has a handwriting to text feature in the note pad program that I love. I used to have a Palm pilot that did that. But that was a little box where you put in one letter at a time. This waits for you to finish the word and then it goes. Really accurate, even with my handwriting. ..

The stylus makes the swype feature hella easy, too. It is huge though. ...

I borrowed it to see how the reception on the T mobile network would be at my house., but now I'm conflicted about which phone I want again. My fat fingertips make writing a Bitch, but the stylus cures that.

jimhelm 06-13-2013 10:53 PM

Oh, I am getting 4g lte here on my porch. I only get 1to3 bars of 3g with sprint. I think I'm going to switch to tmobile.

Now I just have to decide which phone again. Dammit.

Lola Bunny 06-14-2013 12:28 PM

My sister has the Note 2, and she loves it also. She doesn't have a tablet so the Note for her is like a phone and tablet in one. I think the difference between the Note and Galaxy 4 is the size.

jimhelm 06-14-2013 03:36 PM

Ok,I got the s4. This is my first post from it. lam Using the hand writing input method.. pretty freak in cool.

Lola Bunny 06-14-2013 05:28 PM

:thumb2: I'm thinking of getting that when my contract ends.

jimhelm 06-14-2013 06:27 PM

do it. If for no other reason than the screen of this thing is like one of those ebooks. It's totally flat white with letters... it looks like you're looking at paper

jimhelm 06-15-2013 03:50 PM

what a cool phone. The voice to text thing is much better than previous phones. It doesn't cut off after you stop a sentence with a period. lol, I had to stop and go back to the manual text entry to get the word 'period' To show up.... twice

My Spigen Glas tR slim screen protector and 32G microSD card arrived today.

The glass screen cover is super slippery, crystal clear and fits perfectly.

Those military grade zag covers are good, but they always have a bit of a visible ripple to them. This is like bit having one, but having one.

lumberjim 08-10-2013 06:37 AM

Ok, update.

I duckling love this phone.

Get one.

Also, I dropped it last night, and cracked the screen cover. Just a little in the one corner, but, now it looks like a phone with a cracked screen. .. only its not. I ordered another spigen glas tr and will be replacing this one. I think my screen would have cracked if it had not been there, so. .. well worth the $34.

This is my current favorite app. Mounted on a Ram X Grip cell phone Mount on the left handle bar, I now have an accurate speedo in my glance distance instead of having to look down at the gas tank.

The Black rectangle is my phone case, shown because I was using the phone to take the picture.

The xgrip has 4 little rubber grippers that keep your phone in reach.

The Ulysses speedometer app also has a program launcher that let's me start Pandora or Waze or maps or whatever app I set up ahead of time in 2 clicks.

Also, multiple trip meters that store history, Max speed records, and alarms if I go over x mph. The dial turns red at 66mph, for example. .. and you can set those speeds.

One of the few apps I've paid for. $1.99 and also well worth it.

lumberjim 08-10-2013 06:51 AM

Plus, I now have removed that ugly wristwatch from my mirror because my phone shows me what time it is.

$175 deductible. Asurion sent me a new phone. I turn it on, swap the sim and sd cards, and it starts loading all the apps I had on my old one. Pretty slick.

Lola Bunny 11-12-2013 09:49 PM

Are you still loving your Galaxy 4, Jim? I read that the internal LCD cracks with just slight movements and that it over heats. Do you have any of these problems?

classicman 11-12-2013 10:24 PM

OK, I'm due... Son says get the I-Phone. Daughter says get a Samsung.

I don't know which I-Phone to even consider.

I dislike the HUGENESS of the Galaxy.

Go...
