Brazil

I recently went on vacation to Brazil and here are some photos from the trip. Most of my photos involve other people so I don't want to post those, but here are some decent ones. Unfortunately, I only have postable photos of a small portion of the trip so there is much more to Brazil than this. It truly is a beautiful country.

My girlfriend grew up in Brazil (she currently studies in the US) so I decided to join her for two weeks over winter break (summer in Brazil). Her parents live near Sao Paulo (not shown) but we spent a week in an apartment near the beach in Guaruja.

Me at the beach eating some corn and drinking a coconut.

The apartment I stayed at for about a week.

Was this a vacation?

piercehawkeye45 01-07-2013 08:52 PM

Sorry, I didn't really put any background in the first post. I edited the initial post for clarification. Thanks.

I'm with zip!

Nice to see you PH. You look amazingly close to what I assumed. Thats a first in cellarland - for me anyway.

piercehawkeye45 01-07-2013 10:20 PM

It was a lot of fun. Everyone I talked to was really nice and understanding of my limited Portuguese, the food was amazing, and it was extremely interesting to see the cultural and infrastructure differences. Sao Paulo is HUGE, bigger than New York, and traffic was horrible but it was a lot of fun to walk through. I drank a lot of fruit juices and all the bread you eat was literally made less than 24 hours prior. If anyone gets a chance, I would strongly recommend it, however, it is a place where you have to be careful as a tourist. I was lucky to be constantly surrounded by Brazilians but I did have to change my dress and behavior in certain areas to avoid attracting attention (hence no pictures of certain regions). As can be seen, I do not look like a Brazilian at all.

The sun did kick my ass though. I wore SPF 50 and still got burnt pretty bad. Still worth it. And NOTHING is more refreshing than drinking a coconut in 90 degree heat. Nothing. Plus, the scenery on the beach was excellent in multiple ways. Not that I was looking...

I do want to go again and next time I should know more Portuguese.

Ibby 01-07-2013 10:22 PM

So you spent most of the trip at the nudist colony, no wonder you got burnt. :haha:

burns334 01-08-2013 07:18 AM

Cool, put up some more pics please and tell us more about the "other places" and how you had to dress to be unnoticed.

footfootfoot 01-08-2013 10:06 AM

The only Portuguese you really need:

Beija-me Muito

Beija-me, beija-me muito
Como se esta noite fosse
a última vez

Beija-me, beija-me muito
Que tenho medo de te perder
Te perder depois

Quero te ter bem perto
Olhar-me em seus olhos
Te ver junto a mim
Pensa que talvez amanhã
Eu já estarei longe
Muito longe daqui

Beija-me, beija-me muito
Como se esta noite fosse
a última vez

Beija-me, beija-me muito
Que tenho medo de te perder
Te perder depois

Beija-me, beija-me muito...

Awesome!

Elspode 01-12-2013 09:25 PM

Is that "Besa Me Mucho" in Portugese?

Lola Bunny 01-12-2013 10:03 PM

Sounds like it to me.

Águas de Março - Letra - TOM JOBIM

É pau, é pedra, é o fim do caminho
é a chuva chovendo, é conversa ribeira
é o pé, é o chao, é a marcha estradeira
passarinho na mao, pedra de atiradeira

Uma ave no céu, uma ave no chao
é um regato, é uma fonte
é um pedaco de pao
é o fundo do poco, é o fim do caminho

é o carro enguicado, é a lama, é a lama
é um passo, é uma ponte
é um sapo, é uma ra
é um resto de mato, na luz da manha
sao as aguas de marco fechando o verao
é a promessa de vida no teu coracao

É pau, é pedra, é o fim do caminho

É pau, é pedra, é o fim do caminho

É pau, é pedra, é o fim do caminho

É pau, é pedra, é o fim do caminho

Pau, pedra, fim do caminho
resto de toco, pouco sozinho

Pau, pedra, fim do caminho,
resto de toco, pouco sozinho.

Waters of March : English Version: “Aquas de Marco Antonio Carlos Jbim Lyrics”

A stick, a stone,
It's the end of the road,
It's the rest of a stump,
It's a little alone
It's a sliver of glass,
It is life, it's the sun,
It is night, it is death,
It's a trap, it's a gun
The oak when it blooms,
A fox in the brush,
A knot in the wood,
The song of a thrush
The wood of the wind,
A cliff, a fall,
A scratch, a lump,
It is nothing at all
It's the wind blowing free,
It's the end of the slope,
It's a beam, it's a void,
It's a hunch, it's a hope
And the river bank talks
of the waters of March,
It's the end of the strain,
The joy in your heart
The foot, the ground,
The flesh and the bone,
The beat of the road,
A slingshot's stone
A fish, a flash,
A silvery glow,
A fight, a bet,
The range of a bow
The bed of the well,
The end of the line,
The dismay in the face,
It's a loss, it's a find
A spear, a spike,
A point, a nail,
A drip, a drop,
The end of the tale
A truckload of bricks
in the soft morning light,
The shot of a gun
in the dead of the night
A mile, a must,
A thrust, a bump,
It's a girl, it's a rhyme,
It's a cold, it's the mumps
The plan of the house,
The body in bed,
And the car that got stuck,
It's the mud, it's the mud
Afloat, adrift,
A flight, a wing,
A hawk, a quail,
The promise of spring
And the riverbank talks
of the waters of March,
It's the promise of life
It's the joy in your heart
A stick, a stone,
It's the end of the road
It's the rest of a stump,
It's a little alone
A snake, a stick,
It is John, it is Joe,
It's a thorn in your hand
and a cut in your toe
A point, a grain,
A bee, a bite,
A blink, a buzzard,
A sudden stroke of night
A pin, a needle,
A sting, a pain,
A snail, a riddle,
A wasp, a stain
A pass in the mountains,
A horse and a mule,
In the distance the shelves
rode three shadows of blue
And the riverbank talks
of the waters of March,
It's the promise of life
in your heart, in your heart
A stick, a stone,
The end of the road,
The rest of a stump,
A lonesome road
A sliver of glass,
A life, the sun,
A knife, a death,
The end of the run
And the riverbank talks
of the waters of March,
It's the end of all strain,
It's the joy in your heart.

Note: You will note that the English translation of Aquas de Marco antonio carlos jobim lyrics” is longer than the original Portuguese version. Jobim added lyrics to the song when it made the transition to English. If you speak Portuguese, you will also notice that some of the English lyrics bear no resemblance to the original lyrics. For example, the beautiful fourth stanza more properly translates to "It is wood that resists the wind, the falls of the riverbank, it's the profound mystery, it's wanting or not wanting." You can find more faithful (but perhaps less lyrical) translations, such as this one or this one. In each case, however, both the original lyrics and translations are flawed. Regarding the original lyrics, trust those offered at the Jobim fan site (which are the ones offered on this page).

This translation is a little better, (and you can read about the results of selecting the best Brazilian song of all time ... guess first, of course). Regrettably, no translation can do justice to the original lyrics. You've just got to learn Portuquese

Lola Bunny 01-14-2013 12:51 PM

If you want correct translation of song lyrics, might as well as stick to the original songs. If you need to know what it's saying, then look up the translation and enjoy the original song. The song will still be beautiful that way. Well, in my opinion. :)

footfootfoot 01-14-2013 03:17 PM

BigV, Aguas de MArco is an awesome song but he's in Brazil with his (no doubt) hottie girl friend so Beija me Muito (kiss me a lot) is the obvious song. Try to follow the plot.

If the cellar wanted your opinion we'd give it to you, then make a poll to see if we agreed on the opinion then there'd be serious thread drift until it turned to a discussion of gun politics then everyone would be careful not to invoke godwin's law so the thread would never die and never get back to the OT, so keep your opinions to your self.:p:

Depends on how he made out with the girl. Maybe he's singing the girl from Ipanema.

ouch. :D

Footfootfoot, I totally teed that one up for you and you whiffed it.

Pete, thankfully, stroked it for a stand up double. Posting the lyrics and a video would have been out of the park.

:-D

Well damn. I woulda, but I was on my cell. Copy and paste on those things can be … challenging.

footfootfoot 01-15-2013 10:29 AM

What can I say? I'm off my game lately. A lot on my so called mind. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

It would have been great.
