Ammo, Lead, and Hunting
2 Attachment(s)
It's that time of year folks! While searching for cheap ammo I discovered this site
http://huntingwithnonlead.org/index.html which is all about hunting without lead. I always assumed that the lead fragments were fairly localized and noticeable. Apparently not. Xrays and CT scans of game meat show a cloud of lead specks several inches beyond the wound and wound channel. A lot of stuff has been written about lead and Condors dying from eating lead in game and fish. We all know that Condors are assholes, just like their friends, the owls. I, however, despite being an asshole myself, don't want to eat any lead. So I started looking into copper solid and lead free ammo. There are some cool rounds out there that have excellent ballistics and weight retention (95%) and consistent expansion of 1.8 - 2 x. Then I found this awesome ammo search engine: http://ammoseek.com/ you enter your variables, caliber, weight, manufacturer, etc. and it displays all the places selling the ammo and the prices, with links to the site's page. Thinking of using either the Remington Copper solid .308 165 or the Federal Vital Shock with the Barnes Triple Shock X, on left. Remington copper solid on right. X Ray shows backstrap riddled with lead fragments. Taget shows three shot group, 2" high @ 100 yds. |
Lead kinda defeats that whole eating natural meats thing. I always figured it was an issue but those scans make it look much worse than expected.

Oh Be a Man and eat your LEAD !!!!
Its (not) Good for you !!!!! Seriously thou good thinking , |

See, that there is why the cannibals died out. Just take the scalp for your belt, and go to The Lotus Blossom for cat.

If nothing else, ammoseek is an awesome tool
|
I used it to search for .40-65 and .577 Snider. No luck, means I will be reloading for primitive weapons season

See what a guy-centric thread this is?
This is PURE guy stuff. I'll bet :wolf: doesn't even hunt. chuh. |
With my Snider, I use brass 24 gauge shotgun shells and load with an oversized minie at .590. 80 grains of 2F works well.
|
That's why I hunt bear with a baseball bat. ;):p:

Dodee oh doh doh doh |
Wait, what? I thought you were a Shawnee, not a Mohican.

Got a question 3F. Have you ever tried .35 Whelen in a Handi-Rifle for primitive weapons? I'm considering one, just don't how rough the recoil might be in such a small package
|
Couldn't say; I've never tried one. As you know, recoil is more pronounced with a lighter firearm. I really like my .50 Great Plains Rifle for that reason. It weighs a ton, is easy to keep steady, and doesn't seem to have much more kick than my .22.
I also am 100% in favor of Limbsaver recoil pads. Amazing difference. |
