Where is the Cellar's place in the universe of the web?
Well, it's on the internet map.

The Cellar is much more interesting when viewed up close and personal.

Apparently, wordpress.com and go.com are assholes.

Granted, this place is...ok, that is, when you learn not to take certain elements so seriously, but as a message board, we ain't all 'at. The biggest vBulletin-powered board right now in terms of membership is OffTopic.com with more than 550,000 members. The last time I was there ('bout 2 years ago), there were around 200 new posts per day.

The hardware required at OffTopic to handle a member base that big is:

• 5 Web Servers each with Dual Xeon 3.0 Ghz Processors, 2GB Ram, Ultra 320 15k SCSI Drive. Gallery/Uploads Server with Single Xeon 2.8, 2GB Ram, Ultra 320 15k Raid Array. Database Server with Dual Xeon 3.0 1MB, 4GB Ram, Ultra 320 15k Raid Array.

How do they pay for all this? Paid Subscriptions. Up to $125 for a lifetime subscription.

And I bet Teh Cellar has been around longer.

There is a point where a forum gets too big, where community diminishes. Where you don't know the people. Where it's a handful of alphas and a bunch of poking noobs. Where it takes twice as much effort to make half as big a splash. Where you know everybody but you don't really know anybody. Where you need avatars because you never remember anyone's name.

I don't so much care for that.

Any forum with over 500,000 members is just 'way too big. It has to degenerate into a small group of alphas and everyone else just looking on. Meh. The Cellar is big enough that pretty much everyone can find a niche, but there's still community. That's pretty hard to achieve.

Just to be clear, I never said OffTopic was a better board, just bigger, but The Cellar has "personality", and I think, well...golly gee whilikers...that's swell.

I like the Cellar way of doing things. I do drop in on larger forums but more in the persona of long term member, occasional poster. They're usually based around a specific topic and I don't share any of my life there.

And sometimes I read very cliquey forums, with a ridiculous amount of in-jokes.
I read there because some of the posts are very funny, but I couldn't be bothered to learn all the rules in order to be part of them. They're as rigid as Regency England and the bon ton.

There are other forums?

I hope this doesn't make us famous. I don't want to be mainstream.


Although, it would be kind of cool to be at a party where a dozen people are raving about The Cellar, and wait until they pause and say, Oh, yeah, I was in the cellar when it was still ... [don sunglasses] ... underground.

Yes, but the ultimate 'hipster' statement (if I can believe everything I've learned from internet memes) would be to say,
"Oh, I hang out at a little forum called the Cellar, you've probably never heard of it."

Yeah, we're a good size, and a good community. But it would be nice if we could get some real new members in here every once in a while. (Spammers and trolls need not apply.)

I was thinking that recently - been ages since we had a good genuine noob. I was going to mention Orthodoc; she's kinda new post-count wise, but she's been here longer than me. Now that's underground.

Maybe we should start a few bots on other forums? We could find a porno pic of a young girl and claim to be her.

Even a whippersnapper like me used a dialup modem -- although the lowest I ever got was I think 900 baud, and certainly not with a rotary phone. My grandmother did have one of those, but never in my family.

If I remember correctly, the first time I blasted off into Cyberspace was 1987....connected to Gameboard Plus BBS via Telix using a 1200 baud modem to download stuff and play L.O.R.D.

I got DSL in 2005.
