Cellar's Place in the Universe

Where is the Cellar's place in the universe of the web?
Well, it's on the internet map.

Lamplighter 07-31-2012 06:22 PM

The Cellar is much more interesting when viewed up close and personal.

Happy Monkey 07-31-2012 06:34 PM

Apparently, wordpress.com and go.com are assholes.

Spexxvet 08-01-2012 08:56 AM

We're right at the center of the internet universe, of course!

Granted, this place is...ok, that is, when you learn not to take certain elements so seriously, but as a message board, we ain't all 'at. The biggest vBulletin-powered board right now in terms of membership is OffTopic.com with more than 550,000 members. The last time I was there ('bout 2 years ago), there were around 200 new posts per day.

The hardware required at OffTopic to handle a member base that big is:
  • 5 Web Servers each with Dual Xeon 3.0 Ghz Processors, 2GB Ram, Ultra 320 15k SCSI Drive. Gallery/Uploads Server with Single Xeon 2.8, 2GB Ram, Ultra 320 15k Raid Array. Database Server with Dual Xeon 3.0 1MB, 4GB Ram, Ultra 320 15k Raid Array.

How do they pay for all this? Paid Subscriptions. Up to $125 for a lifetime subscription.

glatt 08-01-2012 11:13 AM

those numbers don't add up.

half a million members but only 200 posts per day? There should be around a million posts per day.

There must only be about a hundred active members if they get 200 posts a day.

I took a wild guess, ok?! All I know..it was a lot. You want correct numbers? Ask Fazle.

The fuck we ain't!!

We're all that, and a bag o'chips. With a titty-twist on the side!

And I bet Teh Cellar has been around longer.

Undertoad 08-01-2012 03:39 PM

There is a point where a forum gets too big, where community diminishes. Where you don't know the people. Where it's a handful of alphas and a bunch of poking noobs. Where it takes twice as much effort to make half as big a splash. Where you know everybody but you don't really know anybody. Where you need avatars because you never remember anyone's name.

I don't so much care for that.

Me three. (Okay, I don't know how to make those cool little upward arrows ... so shoot me ... )

Any forum with over 500,000 members is just 'way too big. It has to degenerate into a small group of alphas and everyone else just looking on. Meh. The Cellar is big enough that pretty much everyone can find a niche, but there's still community. That's pretty hard to achieve.

classicman 08-01-2012 11:53 PM

Too big, too impersonal.

We've done some AMAZING things here.

Safari
Cellar Car
Christmas exchanges
Numerous interventions

(Add on your own)

That's actually a good point.

John Sellers 08-02-2012 01:58 AM

Just to be clear, I never said OffTopic was a better board, just bigger, but The Cellar has "personality", and I think, well...golly gee whilikers...that's swell.

Sundae 08-02-2012 03:58 AM

Horses for courses (and I don't just mean the French)
I like the Cellar way of doing things. I do drop in on larger forums but more in the persona of long term member, occasional poster. They're usually based around a specific topic and I don't share any of my life there.

And sometimes I read very cliquey forums, with a ridiculous amount of in-jokes.
I read there because some of the posts are very funny, but I couldn't be bothered to learn all the rules in order to be part of them. They're as rigid as Regency England and the bon ton.

Rhianne 08-02-2012 05:52 AM

There are other forums?

ZenGum 08-02-2012 06:00 AM

I hope this doesn't make us famous. I don't want to be mainstream.

Although, it would be kind of cool to be at a party where a dozen people are raving about The Cellar, and wait until they pause and say, Oh, yeah, I was in the cellar when it was still ... [don sunglasses] ... underground.

Yes, but the ultimate 'hipster' statement (if I can believe everything I've learned from internet memes) would be to say,
"Oh, I hang out at a little forum called the Cellar, you've probably never heard of it."

glatt 08-02-2012 07:31 AM

Yeah, we're a good size, and a good community. But it would be nice if we could get some real new members in here every once in a while. (Spammers and trolls need not apply.)

ZenGum 08-02-2012 07:56 AM

I was thinking that recently - been ages since we had a good genuine noob. I was going to mention Orthodoc; she's kinda new post-count wise, but she's been here longer than me. Now that's underground.

Undertoad 08-02-2012 09:54 AM

Maybe we should start a few bots on other forums? We could find a porno pic of a young girl and claim to be her.

Elpole 08-02-2012 09:57 AM

Yes, let's do that.

Or we could all post with a bunch of sockpuppets and create the illusion of higher active membership?

HugeC 08-02-2012 09:58 AM

That'll never work, dumbass

The CIA 08-02-2012 09:58 AM

Will so

JBKlycle 08-02-2012 09:59 AM

Not if you keep using socks that look like other users, idiot.

BigMcLargeHuge 08-02-2012 10:00 AM

hmmm... Maybe.

Still... I must break you.

Lord God Quirk 08-02-2012 10:01 AM

Undertoab 08-02-2012 10:02 AM

Stop this!

It's silly.

jimhelm 08-02-2012 10:57 AM

It never stops being funny though. It. Just. Gets. Funnier.

OK, that's just crazy talk. How would we ever find such a picture?

If ya'll want n00bs (sorta), I could create another account, maybe call myself Neuroclone. Or, for all you fans of it, how about Drax 2.0. :p:

The word you're looking for is "dialup."

But you whippersnappers, you probably never used an acoustic modem. With a rotary dial phone.

glatt 08-04-2012 07:43 PM

300 baud, baby. Just not to connect to the Cellar.

Clodfobble 08-04-2012 08:39 PM

Even a whippersnapper like me used a dialup modem -- although the lowest I ever got was I think 900 baud, and certainly not with a rotary phone. My grandmother did have one of those, but never in my family.

John Sellers 08-05-2012 01:20 AM

If I remember correctly, the first time I blasted off into Cyberspace was 1987....connected to Gameboard Plus BBS via Telix using a 1200 baud modem to download stuff and play L.O.R.D.

I got DSL in 2005.

asidebet 08-09-2012 01:10 AM

Yeah, well I remember slide rules. So there!

John Sellers 08-09-2012 02:14 AM

Bi poster, I see. 7 posts in 3 whole years. That's quite a feat. :D
