Been chillin' with the Jamaicans after work
last few days I've been hanging with the Jamaicans after work, drinking beers, listening to obscure reggae tracks, learning some Patois, and eating some of the most delicious goddamn food I've ever had.
Last night Mr. C cooked up one of the deer shanks from last fall after marinating it all night and then putting some amazing Jamaican Mojo onto it. OMG. They are cagey about their recipes... :( |
Work? what's keeping you busy these days? I thought you were finished with that house build. Or is that still going on? Speaking of which, you promised pictures.
|
Don't you need someone to sweep up after you all, or bring you water, or something?
*raises hand* |
*raises hand* I'm a lot closer and not really busy at all...
|
Yabbut I need to 'find myself.'
 |
I found myself... I am a multiculture-friendly construction assistant :D
|
*snickers*
I'm sure I could help in some capacity. (Watch it there, foot.) ;) |
I'm OK with chugging a little cock if that helps get me the job.

Sounds like a good gig, cocksucking aside. |

I've been found in weirder places than that.

You need to brush up on your negotiating skills. |
Well I've gotten royally boned up the ass in most of my previous jobs so this is an improvement.
|
so, we're speaking figuratively here then?
|
Look, I'm not doing you man.
unless you maybe powder down there a little more |
UT, if you want a little gig, you are welcome to help me with my network. It needs a professional touch.

I know you think you're hot and all....
but it's not the heat. It's the humidity. |
Sorry Infi and UT but yesterday was final site clean-up and pack out of all tools.
and not to put too fine a point on it, but you got your job descriptions reversed. I will keep both of you in mind for future projects. http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/...nFarm-0060.jpg http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/...nFarm-0062.jpg http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/...nFarm-0065.jpg http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/...nFarm-0086.jpg http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/...nFarm-0168.jpg http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/...nFarm-0169.jpg http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/...nFarm-0170.jpg http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/...nFarm-0184.jpg http://i1069.photobucket.com/albums/...nisonFarm-.jpg |
It's got a sweet little porch railing on it now, I need to go back and take a set of final images. The kids moved in already and have set up the interior kind of nicely.
|
Nice! I like the detail of the rafter tails under the roof overhang.
I see electrical, but no plumbing. Is there plumbing? What's the purpose of this structure? It looks kind of like a bunkhouse. Is it heated/insulated? |
Thanks.
There is plumbing, the photos are before the plumbing went in. It's a 3 season bunk house and crew kitchen. It has R10 walls and is so small it could probably work through the winter, but most of the plumbing is exposed, so you'd have to deal with heating and insulating that. When I go back, I'll take some detail shots. |
I love construction photos. What was your contribution here? Besides photographer that is? Did everyone do everything? Were you the designated painter? Framer? Finish carpenter? .... Were you Gunga Din with a dustpan (minus the sore throat, not that there's anything wrong with that)?
|
I was the chief motherfuckerwhatsincharge.
I did the whole thing, tough guy, except most of the plumbing and some of the wiring. |
Do you own that scaffolding, or did you rent it? How about all the other tools? I imagine you have quite the collection, but that doesn't necessarily mean you have everything you need to build a house.
Did you have helpers with the framing? Or did you use jacks to lift the walls? I am fascinated by the tricks people use to work alone. There's actually a book out there called Working Alone and it's full of little tips and tricks the author uses to do stuff by himself safely. Lots of clamps get used to temporarily hold the other end of stuff. |
I own the scaffolding. I bought it after renting it for a few months. It's amazing what a difference it makes.
I had a friend work with me on the framing and roofing. I pretty much own anything needed to build, plumb, and wire a house. I haven't rented a tool in a long time. I did borrow a couple of tools for this job since mine were in for repair. |
How much to completely replace t1-11 siding on a 2200 sq ft home? And build a second-story deck?
|
OK. Back to those rafter tails.
How you do that? You have to notch them for the top plate, and then put the decorative touch on the end. They appear to all be identical. Did you use a router and jig for each? Jig saw? Coping saw? :) |

R-e-s-p-e-c-t. I'm no tough guy, I'm a hack with more time than money and sense put together. I am full of admiration for your mad skillz here. I'd sweep up or bring beer just to go to school on a job like this (no blow jobs though). I've a beautiful list of projects and a motley crew of tools (I do love me some tools). I wait with bated breath for your descriptive posts. For pete's sake, scratch glatt's itch for starters. I'll be taking notes. Yours, |
:notworthy
footfootfoot you rockrockrock. Thats been a dream of mine. Definitely on my bucket list. Crack a beer/soda/water whatever and go ahead. We're all |
Nice build!

Thanks for the mad props, all y'all. UT, I'll come up with a ball park estimate for you.
Glatt, here is how I do the tails. The second part is to lay the pattern on your rafter stock, trace and cut. The plumb cuts are made with the circ saw, the scroll is done with the jig saw. Always be sure to find the crown of your rafters and put that up. Crown is the natural curve of the board. |
Thank you, sir! May I have another?

Thanks foot! Pretty simple. You just cut to the traced line.
With my crappy old Black and Decker saber saw, when I cut a curve in stock that thick, the cut doesn't stay square to the surface of the board. The blade flexes toward the outside of the curve. I'm probably doing something wrong like using a blade that's too dull, or pushing on the saw too hard. It works great in thin stock though. Attachment 39579 |

We will need a permit on the deck so it will have to be scheduled a little. Also I will be needing soffits but nothing special, painted plywood I assume. If you have someone who can do bathroom renovation, or drywall ceilings, that'd be great. |
Ahem.
Listen here, buddy...I'm getting in on this one way or another! |
Someone's gotta make the food and beer runs, and you can stay with footer in the master bedroom.
|
Well when the hell will I have time to get food and beer?
|
listen missy these men are here to do serious work and i can't have them being all interrupted and exhausted. time is money now you roll down to the Giant Market and bring back 4 rotisserie chickens, stat.
the nighttime is another story. |
Fine. But you'll drink Natty Light and like it.
|
*fumes silently*
|
Glatt,
All jig saws do that. A sharp blade, fairly coarse and slow feed can help that somewhat. Then throw some 50 grit paper on your random orbit sander and even up the cut. 50grit on a R.O. sander is great at stock removal. UT, the Jamaicans are strictly farm workers and part of this gov't exchange program where they have to take the whizz quiz when they return home. Natty Light? National Bohemian? I haven't drank that since I was a child! I'm sure I have a position for IM in addition to gopher. |

what's the rough footprint of the house? How many doors and windows? bushes/shrubs at the base? How big a 2nd story deck? What kind of siding? paint or stain? |
PM me your actual email address and I will send you photos and details.
~ if you get IM to send photos please forward them along ~ |
Count me in!
I'm thinking it would be awesome to make a community "barn-raising" type thing out of this. Of course, fffoooooottt's got most of the hard work done already (which makes it an awesomer idea), but there's so many other things we can help with. I make an awesome food and bev wench, I've got l33t decorating skills (did someone say "cheap chic?"), and fully understand the imperative of proper bong-loading and smoke-break service. Get UT in on it and we can all help him recover his cakeness. Come to think of it, my garage/shop building (such as it is) and chicken yard/fence could both use a complete overhaul. When we're done at footer's, you're all invited to my place for another project... Who wants to come to Washington? |

The framing is so incredibly beautiful it's a shame to cover it up. I haven't seen work that nice for a very, very long time. :artist:
|
Thanks, Bruce. I know what you mean. I always regret having to cover up the framing.
