I'll go first.

WHAT IS THAT!?
|
Thai sticks?
edit: and really dirty glass. |
Did a one-armed person roll that?! Did you really want us to see 'how you roll'?
I'll be back later, I got Momdigr over mah shoulder. :joint: |

I was going to guess pot, but rolled in rice paper wrappers like a spring roll.
|
Um...why is one of them blue on the end?
|
Looks like a crutch made out of something blue.

you know how you can get toilet paper in individual rolls? wrapped in a paper of sorts? we used to use that for rolling papers for our buglers. the smokes i smoke now, i do still roll my own about half the time, are rolled with flax. good stuff.....
|
I think paper technology may have advanced since y'all's days. They look like rice paper Elements to me. Stuff is seriously see-through.

Well, whats the blue bit at the thin end then?

I'm so out of touch. I don't know what a crutch is, except when you have a broken leg.
|
Ibby, when I was your age the height of smoking fashion was a paper printed with designs of tie-dye or leaf patterns that was made with flavored inks.
I guess with the price of weed these days (I was paying $30-40/ounce) you want a thinner paper. |
christ. It's 300/o in burlington, or between 15-20/g

Funny but on the floor to the left is an old Chinese carpet that once resided in my grandparents bedroom and later ended up in my house. It got so worn and frayed that I no longer wanted it in the house but could not bring myself to discard it, I figure it is over 100 years old and made the trip from China to London with my grand parents in 1929 and then on to New York in 1956 and to Texas in 2008. Something classy about having a Chinese carpet in your work shop! |
Didn't see any of those papers in Amsterdam, but then I was buying pre-rolled.
At the girlie end of the market. |
Filter? Are you kidding me?
In my day, the roach was both the rolled smokable as well as the itty bitty tip left at the finish. A doobie was smokable product in paper. A roach clip was used to hold the roach, could be an alligator clip with a bunch of feathers hanging off it, or something specifically designed for the purpose. I had a lovely roachclip made by Jerry Samuels, aka Napoleon XIV (They're Coming to Take Me Away). I preferred to smoke from bowls or bongs. One hitters or party bowls. Like most of my generation I had a lovely Mexican Onyx bowl. That's lost to the mists of history. I think I still have the roach clip in a box somewhere. I am unable to dredge up from my memory how we referred to having expended all the smokable product ... kicked, maybe? Guess that shit does cause memory impairment. |

But I am always grateful that I grew up when weed was cheap and cocaine was unobtainably expensive. Around $250 to $300 per gram, if I remember. |
I usually smoke from pieces, but I actually am pretty partial to metal bowls/stems with plastic chambers, simply for durability's sake. I also prefer hoses to necks, but not hookah-style product-on-top. I also have a handful of one-hitters that look like cigarettes (and a zippo with a false inside chamber that holds about 3/4g), that i have literally smoked standing between a secret service officer and a cop outside the vice-president of taiwan's house. heh. But when I roll, I roll about like those, with either hemp or rice paper (better flavor), and a good sturdy crutch at the end about the size of a cigarette filter, so I have something to hold onto and so I know I'm not wasting any product at the unsmoked end.

I also notice your vice had little shock absorber sound deadening plastic rings on the handle shaft. I'd never seen that before, and think it's a neat idea. The loud clink when the handle slides down after you turn it is mildly annoying. |

What else would 15 (or 30 wolf) buy back then? what's that in todays money?
|
6 cartons of cigarettes.
Or a bottle of Jack Daniels and 4 cartons. |
gosh but cigarettes are so much more expensive now too. how many LPs would it buy? how much was a 2-liter soda? what'd ordering a pizza cost?
|
Tsk, Tsk! Ya'll are a bunch of hardened criminals. Dope fiends caused by reefer madness.

A vinyl album (40 minutes of music) was $5.00 A pack of cigarettes was about $0.50 A gallon of gas was about $0.60 A stamp $0.13 A Caddy Eldorado was about $10,000 |

There was a half-gallon bottle of coca cola called The Boss. Remember, soda bottles were glass back then. |
oh yeah. pre-plastic-bottles. sheeeit. but 5-dollar LP is a good barometer. How much did ordering, say, a large pepperoni pizza cost?
still, wow. 3 albums / oz. If you assume that an album now is two to three times that, give or take, that SHOULD mean that it should be thirty to fifty bucks an o nowadays. daaaamn. edit: that is to say, i think the price of music is an important barometer there. the VALUE, not just the COST, of gas or stamps or cars has changed a lot more than the VALUE of music has. To be fair, I think the price of music is probably growing UNDER the rate of inflation as it gets more competitive - hell, vinyl costs up to $40 or $50 new nowadays sometimes - but still. the idea of getting an o for the price of three records blows my mind. 'specially since I downloaded probably ten albums this morning... |
In '80/'81, a friend and I would but a 1/2 pound for $240 ($30/oz), each keep an ounce, sell 6 oz to a Haverford College Student (who lived on Bryn Mawr campus) for $240 ($40/oz) who sold 5 oz for $50 each. We did this about every 3 weeks. I don't remember much of '80 to '84. Then I started having bad reactions, and have smoked about 4 times since '84. I miss it.

When we were young and stupid you very rarely saw grass it was more hashish which was very expensive, i seem to remember was about £60-£80 an ounce in the early 80's.
that would depend on the type. I miss getting stoned |
Now everyone is growing their own, the trend is now renting out property hot wiring the electrics and having cannabis farms.
police now fly over suspected places with heat seeking equipment checking properties for excess hot spots. there was a flat a couple of streets away from where i live got busted and they carted away plants and estimated the crop would have been worth around £30,000 |
Hashish was the first dope I ever smoked. I was so stoned I couldn't stand up. The arsehole bf that gave it to me put me in bed then went out with his mates.
Nice. |
Could have been a lot worse...
Back 20 years ago, an ounce cost about $300. Now, $200 to 250. No kidding. |
This thread couldn't be more spare of actual personal vice if it had been posted by non-pederast priests.

First time I smoked any kind of dope (no idea what was in it, very likely hashish as I knew who supplied it) was in a Beer Garden. I was 16 and had had a couple of brandy & Babyshams (don't ask).
After five minutes the world started convulsing and so did my stomach, I went out the front to get some air and was sick on the steps. The barmaid was disgusted and ordered my friends and I to clean it up. I felt a lot better after puking and found the whole thing quite funny. Even looking back I don't feel the burning shame that accompanies much lesser transgressions. I remember my friends being quick to reassure her that it wasn't because of the drink, I usually held my drink very well, I wasn't drunk. They were terrified I'd get them barred, and it was the best under-age pub in the village. Of course the barmaid didn't give a toss at that point. She just didn't want any would-be customers (or indeed anyone) seeing vomit on her steps, and she certainly wasn't going to clean them herself. I didn't mix alcohol and dope for many, many years, and was very wary for a lot longer. |
The one time I smoked (or remember smoking) hashish, '94 I think, was at a party where I didn't know anyone, and the people I came with...well, I had no idea what happened to them. Most likely, they weren't far away from me the whole time.
After what seemed like hours, but was probably only 20 minutes or so, I thought I should call a trusted friend I'd known since college to come pick me up. Except that the friend I'd decided to call was, at that point, a cop. He had lots of fun with that one at my expense for a loooong time after. |
