Fleshing - Not for the sensitive

1 Attachment(s)
I'm so proud of Addie!!! She's only 4 and here she is fleshing out a deer hide on our salting table (at my Daddy's). She wasn't sure about it, but she had a pretty big grin. Yes, I'm proud my youngest is a redneck. LOL.

I realize hunting is a sensitive subject with some, but we have an over population in our state. In fact, we have deer that starve to death during bad winters. Anyway, this doe gave us 70 lbs of meat after processing and her hide will be tanned.

is that a can of CRC screw loose?

ZenGum 02-05-2012 10:54 PM

I'm not sure if I approve, but it's a hell of a lot better tha Toddlers in Tiaras.

classicman 02-05-2012 11:46 PM

I approve, especially if the Mayans were right.

Big Sarge 02-06-2012 12:36 AM

I want Addie to be well prepared for her future. We all believe she is going to be either a stripper or serial killer

Why not both?

Sundae 02-06-2012 03:41 PM

Better a Fleischer than ending up as Fleisch.

Good on you for showing her the food chain.
An animal is killed for food. The animal is then prepared as food and hide.
We do not waste any part of the animal.
To me that's decent and respectful.
We do not waste any part of the animal. Although I think that comes from Peter Straub's Koko, which is hardly a fitting source!

I used to be ridiculously squeamish. I'd gag and retch at anything.
Blood doesn't really bother me now, although I'd steer clear of viewing graphic injuries.
Poo (and vomit) still get me though. I can gut a fish happily, but a mammal? Probably not. Too much.

I even had the dry heaves when one of our girls wet herself on Friday.
Bless her, it was just a little wet patch, but I had to accompany her to the toilet and hand in wipes and fresh underwear. The poopy smell in there meant I had to back off quick in case the little one thought I was reacting to her.

Sheldonrs 02-06-2012 04:51 PM

Has she seen "Bambi" yet? :D

Big Sarge 02-06-2012 04:59 PM

She has Sheldon & we've explained the difference. Also had the talk about Rudolph. I'm trying to teach my kids this is far more humane than sending animals to the "slaughter house". Bryanna remains anti-gun & hunting and she's the Native-American. LOL

Limey - a stripper & a serial killer? Maybe an updated version of Dexter?

"Well honey, it's harder to sneak up on them with a knife, but I admire your ambition!"

Off topic:

Big Sarge, I love seeing the pictures of you and your kids having such fun. But.

You knew there was gonna be a but, didn't you. Yeah. So. About your camera. Could we maybe have a little discussion about what kind of camera it is, what the controls are like, how you use it... something. Your kids are adorable, there's no question about that. Just imagine how much more you, and they, will enjoy those pictures if they were less blurry.

There, I said it. I hope you don't take offense, none is intended. Care to talk about taking sharper snapshots?

classicman 02-07-2012 04:40 PM

... or your hands weren't shaking ... or the kids would STAY STILL!
;)

BigV 02-07-2012 04:44 PM

It's the camera that's moving, not the bricks or the tools or the aerosol can leaving streaks like that. There are ways to make that not happen. Probably just a button or two.

Big Sarge 02-07-2012 07:45 PM

Android phone being used. I have tremors and the phone doesn't have image stabilization. Good point about the photo quality. I'll start trying to use a more stable "platform" because the pics really are blurry and I realize they can be annoying. Good point

HungLikeJesus 02-07-2012 08:36 PM

I think they're artistic. And she's very cute with her killin' knife.

Thanks for not taking offense, Sarge. I see some shots from you that are tack sharp, and some that are action shots. Bracing your hand, even against your body may help. A two handed grip, these kinds of things will help. Also turning on the flash, though that might slow down the performance of the camera due to flash charge time.

Also, I found a camera app, very well reviewed on lifehacker.com, called CameraZoom FX. It's not free, but close, $2.99. It has this feature called Stable Shot. Here's the blurb:

Quote:

Awesome Shot Stability

No More Blurry Shots

Use the on screen Image Stabilizer to capture at just the right moment. The on-screen monitor will show you how steady you are holding your device.
I love seeing your happy pictures. Your kids will enjoy them in years to come, seeing themselves as "little kids" from back in the day. Keep them coming!

Big Sarge 02-07-2012 10:27 PM

Thanks BigV for the tips. The sharper photos were done with my Nikon which was broken during a recent pursuit. I'll check the app out

TheMercenary 02-14-2012 08:16 AM

Wouldn't that be better called, "lack of flashing"?
