So, I just totalled the car....

-the one that wasn't in the shop getting a $500 repair. I guess it's one way to resolve the question of how we were going to get all 5 of us, our luggage and two sets of hockey goalie gear back to Ann Arbor from the UP in a 2-door Focus.......

Griff 12-03-2011 01:52 PM

Is everyone ok?

zippyt 12-03-2011 02:03 PM

OH Shit !!!
Are You and every body else ok ????

jimhelm 12-03-2011 02:04 PM

crap! that sucks!!! glad everyone is ok!

monster 12-03-2011 02:42 PM

yes, 'course we're ok I would let you know if we weren't thanks. We're now enjoying the tale-telling portion of the incident.... ;)

(sorry I didn't reply immediately, i was in the shower washing the glass particles off my scalp -those things stick like crazy!)

Nirvana 12-03-2011 02:46 PM

That is a sucky way to get an adrenaline rush! Wo!

monster 12-03-2011 02:47 PM

We do have pics but they are stuck on Hebe's phone right now.

Srlsy, if everyone has to total one car in their life, I'm glad this was mine. Over in seconds, no human damage, yes, we are hundreds of miles from home, yes, we just spent $500 getting the car fixed (a different $500 from the one that's currently in the shop getting fixed), yes, we just filled the gas tank, but there was nothing on the other carriageway, the crumple zones did what they oughta, the car was old, we hadn't spent anything fixing the vibration problem, and we are surrounded by 25 other families all from ann arbor with huge vans and SUVs.

monster 12-03-2011 02:50 PM

...and we have insurance.....

....and a tale to tell.... hell it's sleeting here, the weekend was heading up for boring between games before this......

jimhelm 12-03-2011 03:04 PM

glad you're ok, Monstah. and Hebe, too!

wanna fly to NJ and get you a new Nissan?[/ambulance chaser]

zippyt 12-03-2011 03:05 PM

Nothing like being in a Caravan and 1 of the Veh's Flips out !!!
Glad every body is ok !

monster 12-03-2011 03:06 PM

Nissan? Isn't that some kind of vanilla wafer or something?

I'm totally after a clown car this time.....

We were the only ones driving, but we were only a couple of miles from the hotel. thor has a tourney in St Ignace (under the bridge) and hector is 50 miles further North in Sault Ste marie. hector is rooming with his coach, the rest of us are staying with Thor, hebe and I were headed North to watch Hector's morning game and then planned to come back for Thor's which was immediately after. beest stayed back to help thor get to the rink on time

ZenGum 12-03-2011 05:16 PM

Glad you're all okay! Now for all the logistics of getting back, doing the paperwork, getting a replacement, etc etc. PITA time.

BigV 12-03-2011 08:02 PM

glad you're alll ok. I've totalled a number of cars in my day, it's not a fun as it sounds. Some cars I've totalled more than once. Good luck car shopping.

Lamplighter 12-03-2011 08:10 PM

Probably an urban myth, but I heard that when Oldmobile was first introducing air bags,
they set up a test group where some cars had them and some did not.

One customer had an accident and the air bag went off, so they got another car.
That person had an another accident and the air bag went off, so they got another car.
That person had yet an another accident and the air bag went off, and the person was disqualified from the test.

But maybe society would be better off if that first car did not have air bags at all.

As I said, probably an urban myth.

monster 12-03-2011 10:28 PM

OK so here's what happened -and do you think we can sue?

Ice storm/sleet hit. Was in the outside lane on I75 in UP Michigan. No real traffic about but was about to pass an on-ramp so had pulled into outside lane in case there was any joining traffic. Hebe put on a CD as we settled in, then suddenly the car span off the road, did 180, hit the central res barrier passenger side on, went through it, ended up nose towards the barrier, tail in the fast lane of the other carriageway.

So, the barrier is the wire things, designed the have the posts break but the wires catch the cars. the Sheriff was real pissed because the barrier is new and we were the first to "test" it, and it failed because we went straight through it. can we sue?

zippyt 12-03-2011 10:41 PM

Hellz Yes , Shoddy construction !!!

ZenGum 12-03-2011 11:32 PM

Broke the barrier in a 2-door ford focus???!!!

No, and they'll bill you for barrier repairs.

I remember my father getting billed by the electric company for a pole my mother took out. He made me go drag that sucker home.

Trilby 12-04-2011 04:32 AM

Yikes!

I'll add my 'glad you're both okay!' to the mix.

whew. The fun never ends.

monster 12-04-2011 08:10 AM

Sheriff said they'll bill the insurance...

sexobon 12-04-2011 08:29 AM

Did the incident give you the heebie-jeebies (pun intended)?

classicman 12-04-2011 11:56 AM

Happy to hear everyone is OK.
Insurance will pay for the barrier damage up to the limits of your coverage.

Heck of a way to solve the electrical issues you were having. Kinda like swatting flies with a sledgehammer. ;)

monster 12-04-2011 05:27 PM

We're home! Thanks to all the wonderful friend who gave us and our enormous quantities of luggage everywhere, and the the friend who left a truck in the drive so we can get to school etc tomorrow :) here's hoping the Windstar gets it's fuel pump/whatever fixed without further delay and further expense than estimated......

monster 12-04-2011 06:32 PM

I tried to post it as a new thread, but instead posted it as a reply to this one.

Lamplighter 12-04-2011 06:33 PM

Thank you... I know I'm fading, but was hoping it wasn't so much. :)

classicman 12-04-2011 06:37 PM

a little bondo , some paint , a little duck tape and you would be All set !!!!

Elspode 12-04-2011 09:22 PM

I'm late to this thread, having been pretty self-involved this past week. So glad you and the youngun' walked away safe and sound.

HungLikeJesus 12-04-2011 09:38 PM

You totaled all those cars?! That's impressive.

monster 12-04-2011 09:40 PM

I like to shop in bulk......

jimhelm 12-04-2011 09:46 PM

Its really fucking loud when you crash a car isn't it?

Thats what always struck me. Pow!

monster 12-04-2011 09:48 PM

Actually, it was eerliy quiet. Really. The barriers didn't make much noise, we didn't hit anything hard and there was no other traffic around when we got out. And we were just spinning.

monster 12-04-2011 09:48 PM

Nothing like as loud as your downtown 10mph fender bender (and yes, they can be loud).

ZenGum 12-04-2011 10:01 PM

Judging by the photo, that was nearly a text-book "safe" crash.

The barrier had a little give in it, the car has taken bump after bump on its cruple zones, and so all the energy was absorbed and used up. The rigid passenger shell is unharmed, as are the passengers. Good car.

monster 12-04-2011 10:04 PM

Except that the wires of the barrier were supposed to catch us, but we slipped through and ended in the oncoming lanes. the Sherrif was pissed because these were new barriers and we were the first to test them ...and they failed. Apparently, 15 other crashes requiring towing in that area that day.

monster 12-04-2011 10:09 PM

The emergency services were pretty impressed. And yes, we did bring them out. Eventually. I called 911 as soon as Hebe had stepped out of the car. She asked me if I had a preference for a tow truck. i'm like well I have AAA but I really think you mostly want to get the police here and get it out of the way. Seems like she thought I was just trying to get faster service or something. She called me 5-10 minutes later and said "they won't tow you on AAA unless you call them yourselves" (meanwhile shitload of traffic is steering round, people on both sides stopping to check we're OK and to tell us to stay away from the car....) I said there's no police here yet.... and she was "oh, I thought your car was on the median....."

two minutes later max, cop pulls up. We end up with three cop cars, two fire trucks (gas all over the road), fire chief's truck, tow truck and a couple we don't know why they're there......

zippyt 12-04-2011 10:22 PM

Good crash , Good crowd !!!
And you walked away !!!!!!!!

+25

glatt 12-05-2011 07:40 AM

Jeez. Stopped in the middle of the oncoming traffic. I'm glad you are all Ok.

monster 12-05-2011 09:32 AM

No traffic though. And was mostly on the shoulder. Woulda scared the shit out of anything oncoming and probably caused more accidents. So very lucky.

Spexxvet 12-05-2011 10:32 AM

Glad to hear everyone's ok.

Clodfobble 12-05-2011 02:16 PM

Damn, I'm late to everything. I'm really glad you guys are okay.

DanaC 12-06-2011 05:33 AM

I read but was too lazy to comment at the time :p Glad you're all ok Monstah.

daynarankin 12-08-2011 11:04 PM

That’s really tough luck! Still, glad to know you’re safe, have adequate car insurance and that you have the support of other people. It could have been a lot worse.
