As we are clearly a game to the Pams, by their admission, they are now banned.

wolf 11-01-2011 10:01 AM

Thank you.

glatt 11-01-2011 10:03 AM

It was the right thing.

wolf 11-01-2011 10:05 AM

And that is why he is the boss and we are the underlings.

Undertoad 11-01-2011 10:09 AM

It's like this: if someone truly wants to be a member of the community, we will tolerate their foibles, in the spirit of fellowship. I know you tolerate mine. But if someone wants to play games or test us for their own (sociopathic) reasons, we cannot tolerate that, as it kills that spirit.

Sundae 11-01-2011 10:14 AM

I had it on ignore.
It posted a genuine reaction to my Grandad's death, so I felt I couldn't rage against it.
But it was wrong from the outset.

It must have been a troll, surely.
I hope so anyway.
Someone is getting a lickle twisted laugh from this.

BigV 11-01-2011 10:21 AM

I support your decision UT.

I like your characterization of plural Pams. I think that's fitting. Whether they were one physical person or more, whether they were intentional multiples or more, it's possible to treat them and their posts, their foibles individually. That was how I coped, dealing rationally with the rational posts, and trying to let the shit slide by without picking it up and flinging it back. Ew, nasty.

There were many different effective strategies available to deal with the kerfuffle ignited and fueled by the Pams, this is one, wolf suggested another earlier, Sundae had applied another. This one is fine. Thanks again for your generous gift of the cellar to all of us, and thanks for taking care of it.

classicman 11-01-2011 11:13 AM

Thanks UT. I posted in the other thread before seeing this one.
The Cellar is a great place and you really push the boundaries of acceptance.
Good on you.

SamIam 11-01-2011 11:58 AM

I felt sorry for the Pam's - obviously serious mental issues going on with her. Deep down she can't be a very happy person. That said, she had no business on the Cellar. She just irritated everyone to no benefit - least of all her own.

infinite monkey 11-01-2011 11:58 AM

OH hell, I have to say it.

No, the only effective strategy was to ignore the fucking troll. Every response from "Oh, trolls are people too this might really be a troubled little girl who really needs our love and compassion" to "fuck you pam bitch liar fool" to phone numbers to jumping up and pointing out every fucking obvious flaw in this troll's story: every single one of you fanned this fire. (Not the mods or UT or those who did what I did...stayed the fuck out of it.)

You gave the troll the best troll juice money can buy.

:headshake

Next time, y'all, just SHUT THE FUCK UP! No more namby pamby love the world posts, no more yelling "attention whore" posts no more no more no more.

Jesus H Cripes on a Ritz. If I can stay out of it I'm sure the more perfect of the Dwellars can. How much more obvious could this have been?

Of course, last time I pointed out trolldom I got my ass kicked. For being mean.

Sundae 11-01-2011 12:06 PM

You meanie!
I kick yo ass!

BigV 11-01-2011 12:06 PM

let me try to explain it another way.

there are several ways to deal effectively with the situation. You, infinite monkey, name one, ignoring it. UT names another, banning. This shows two, not "only one", ways to deal effectively with the situation.

infinite monkey 11-01-2011 12:07 PM

"if a monster come in heah, I kick HIS ask"

Remember that little girl vid? Gawd I loved that! That's what you reminded me of. :)

You dealt with it three or four different ways, seemingly changing direction as the popular opinion changed.

It takes a VILLAGE to ignore the troll. The ONLY thing that keeps the troll going is the attention. ANY kind of attention. So you feed it and feed it and feed it...for what...HUNDREDS of posts?

What about this are you not getting?

BigV 11-01-2011 12:12 PM

banning is one

ignoring is one

one and one is two, not one.

Quote:

infinite monkey 11-01-2011 12:13 PM

IT TAKES A VILLAGE TO IGNORE A TROLL.

No, feed it instead. Then WAY later UT gets to ban it. Gee, that was effective.

Nope, you like the attention and drama as much as Pammy does. You can always drool on UT later for needing to take action cause no one could shut the hell up and ignore it.

We disagree. That's fine.

classicman 11-01-2011 12:17 PM

One could also fan the flames till it burned itself out.

Sorry for my harshness. It just seemed it would be obvious, especially after the fact, that any course other than extreme ignore really doesn't work. Well, banning, but we can't ban willy nilly and we don't need to ban if the offender doesn't get reactions and just goes away.

I've been wrong before.

And I really didn't want to get involved. But, after the fact, I had to say what I've been thinking.

BigV 11-01-2011 12:46 PM

: peace :

: olive branch :

(sorry, couldn't find the pictures, please accept these few words as a down payment on my thousand word balance, thanks in advance.)

infinite monkey 11-01-2011 12:47 PM

:peace out, dude:

: olives in a martini:

;)

wolf 11-01-2011 12:50 PM

I am concerned that banning will make her try harder to get back.

Although I don't think that her next post will come from Denmark, the only place in the world that can treat her rare form of pituitary tumor that presents with symptoms of everything except a pituitary tumor.

Undertoad 11-01-2011 12:57 PM

At one point, the predecessor to the Cellar went without any administration for a long time. It was then that the community developed the Passive Ignorance Silence Strike, where a troll would be ignored by all regulars. There was no Ignore feature at the time, you know, everyone just "manually" ignored the person's posts.

It was devastatingly effective. The target knew that their posts were being read, but there were no replies.

We do have Coventry, "global ignore", and recently Emma's time there was similarly effective. Pams can go there next if they are persistent.

I don't think P.I.S.S. can work in our modern day. The Internet is just too damn big; and the Cellar is bigger too. There is a constant stream of spammers, trolls and mentally ill users.

limey 11-01-2011 12:59 PM

I'm sort of with infinite monkey on this, i.e. I chose not to make any responses or references to the Pams as that is obviously what they wanted and I felt anything I said would simply encourage them to stay.
I was also rather puzzled by many people's keenness to interact with the Pams whilst declaring them irritating, but each to their own ...
Now, where's the martini for those olives? Oh, well, we'll just have to make do with this ...:apickle: ...

infinite monkey 11-01-2011 01:00 PM

That'll work for me!

How about Whopper martinis?

DanaC 11-01-2011 01:03 PM

And we all have our own distinct intinctive responses to them.

Also, it started, much as it has in the past, with her apparently trying to fit in after retrurning from a ban. So that has a lulling effect. By the time she unleashes the crazy you've already let down your guard :P

I think we always have to allow for the possibility (Pam aside, I think, she's a special case) that someone will settle the fuck down and start interacting with us as a human being instead of a troll. It's happened before. It could happen again.

Unfortunately (or fortunately) we all have different thresholds that trigger a change in attitude. We all have different levels of tolerance when it comes to personal insults. Things that will draw one dwellar in will baffle another and vice versa.

I;d say the current system works reasonably well, and worked well this time. A few days of PP all over the forum and now gone. The opportunity was there, the door was opened, she chose to shit on the floor and was escorted from the building.

Sundae 11-01-2011 01:03 PM

Whopper Malteasers?

DanaC 11-01-2011 01:05 PM

I will admit, I find her slightly fascinating. I don't mean I want her around, but when she is here and is posting, I cannot let go of the essential question, is this person just playing, or is this genuine mental illness?

More than any of the trolls, the roleplayer in me is a little drawn to Pam.

Undertoad 11-01-2011 01:08 PM

Effective troll is effective!

sexobon 11-01-2011 01:37 PM

It was OTC, a fringe element side effect of the OWS movement. They're messing with forces they don't understand. :worried:

Nirvana 11-01-2011 01:57 PM

What you are all doing here makes the troll dance with glee. I preferred pissing it off.

HungLikeJesus 11-01-2011 01:58 PM

She seemed alright to me.

sexobon 11-01-2011 02:15 PM

Appearances can be deceiving. She was probably half left and half right like everybody else.

Two great tastes that go great together!

DanaC 11-01-2011 02:19 PM

Yeah. I eventually came to the conclusion that it is genuine mental illness, one of the manifestations of which is messing with people's heads and playing different characters on message boards.

I did at one point consider that she might not be real at all. had the same feeling last time as well, briefly. Quite spooky. Like conversing with a very sophisticated AI. Y'know, the way bits of your post would be mechanistically fed back within the response and used to launch a different line of conversation.

Sundae 11-01-2011 02:34 PM

I like Troll Dancing. It's so olde worlde.
Oh, wait. No. That's Morris Dancing.

DanaC 11-01-2011 02:35 PM

And crusty jugglers?

classicman 11-01-2011 02:48 PM

That anything like a stiff neck?

Sundae 11-01-2011 02:50 PM

To cure that you need a great big bushy beard!

Aliantha 11-01-2011 06:19 PM

I think the person playing Pam is seriously ill. I hope that the posts I made projected that thought.

I feel sympathy for the person and hope that some day she will get some help.

I don't think this was the place to get it. She's better off banned.

ZenGum 11-01-2011 10:24 PM

Thanks, mods. Had to be done.

Flint 11-02-2011 08:56 AM

Undertoad 11-02-2011 09:01 AM
