How do stocks work?

I was going through my father-in-laws papers as part of his move, and found (in a shoebox of old letters and photos) 3 certificates of stocks he bought in Pepco a couple decades ago. I think he has no idea he has these, since he made no mention of them when going over finances.

So the question is, if I want to convert these certificates into a check in his name how do I do that? I've never seen one of these certificates in person before. Each one shows the number of shares he bought, and what their price was on the date of purchase. Do I get him to sign the back, and then take them to Pepco, or do I find a stock broker to buy them? Just what do you do with these pieces of paper? Or is it even possible that he already sold these stocks long ago and these old pieces of paper were just left in a shoebox? Assuming a share back then is worth a share today, he's looking at about $5k at today's Pepco stock prices. That will pay for a month in the nursing home.

You put them on before you put on your shoes, although as I recall, Archie Bunker and Meat-head disagree on whether you complete each sock/shoe cycle separately before moving on to the other side, or conversely complete the set of sock installations before proceeding to the shoe phase of the project.

I'm glad you asked, because I don't know if this debate was ever adequately resolved.

Hahahaha!

I remember that 'debate' like I saw it yesterday. I actually agree with Archie. What?

infinite monkey 08-19-2011 07:12 PM

glatt, you probably expected a better response...but I have no idea!

Don't you work with lawyers? ;)

monster 08-19-2011 07:15 PM

I figured Perry had got the sensible aspect of it covered so we could move on...?

infinite monkey 08-19-2011 07:19 PM

I realized that after I posted. I left it for posterity.

It's Friday night. What do I know? Is there a penalty for semi-drunken posting? Crap!

monster 08-19-2011 07:26 PM

yeah, it's not OK for you to be ahead of me, I've only had one or two....

infinite monkey 08-19-2011 07:31 PM

Which is it? You cannot lose track at one or two.

I've had five or eight!

monster 08-19-2011 07:40 PM

well I have two sizes on the go..... and it depends when you read my post, right? Now cracking #3....

but I totally scored in the beer dept tonight -Kroger had 24oz cans for a buck a piece!

infinite monkey 08-19-2011 07:53 PM

Sweet!

Kroger rocks. Except on Coca Cola products.

monster 08-19-2011 07:54 PM

right. I needed coke too, but they never have the best price.

infinite monkey 08-19-2011 07:57 PM

In my experience, it's not just the 'not best' price...it's the absolute worst price ever! Highway robbery! ARGH>

Given the recent actions of the market, I think you first need to ask yourself, do stocks work? Then you might ask how.

Well, Archie was right. You would look like a total imbecile if your house was on fire and you had to run outside with one foot bare and the other foot in a shoe because you got interrupted putting them on.

At the July 4th Yes/Styx concert they were $11.00 apiece!

No way. Sock/shoe, sock/shoe. You can't let your sock get dirty before it goes in the shoe. My socked foot absolutely does not touch the ground before it goes in the shoe.

HungLikeJesus 08-20-2011 09:12 AM

Maybe you need to clean the floor.

If in a shoe box, anyone knows to ask Al Bundy for flat footed advise.

It is a utility. Outstanding back dividends may be available. Ask PEPCO's investor services department for outstanding dividends, possible (unlikely) stock splits, and alternative options. They might even have a stock buyback plan. There should have been a dividend check four times annually.

It is a publically traded stock. Is traded through a stock broker. Consult a discount broker (Ameritrade, E-Trade, ScottTrade, etc) to setup an account. However the stock's value will probably have to exceed $500. You did not provide numbers or date. As a utility, current value may be less than it was a decade ago but more than it was in 2008.

Yeah, I'm weird that way. In the middle of the day I can take off my shoes and walk around in my socks, and then put my shoes back on. But the first time of the day, or right after a shower, I'm a little OCD.

Sundae 08-22-2011 10:44 AM

Spex I had to reread your post to check you weren't Flint (no offence, but Flint has some opinions on hygeine that I think are pretty OCD).

Still, you admitted it.

But honestly, you put your shoes on UPSTAIRS?!
I pad about in bare feet until I'm ready to go out.
Mum doesn't like it, apparently it marks the floors (sheesh!) but even she admits it's better than me tramping dirt around the place from my shoes.

Oh and we've rowed about my preference for bare feet over slippers since I can remember. I used to say I couldn't find them, which led to the classic childhood line of "If I find them I'll smack you with them!" which always, mysteriously, led to their appearance.

I work at a hospital, dear. I'm not doing this stuff for no good reason.

Flint is crazy.
