Facebook C&P statuses / Bullying

annoy the hell out of me.... I finally put the worst offender friend on ignore after she posted this one:

Quote:

A 15 year old girl holds hands with her 1 year old son. People call her a ****. No-one knows she was raped at 13. People call a girl fat. No-one knows she has a serious disease which causes her to be over weight. People call an old man ugly. No-one knows he had a serious injury to his face while fighting for our country in the war. Copy and paste this if you are against bullying and stereotyping. 95% of you won't.
Isn't the "copy and paste this if you're cool, most of you aren't" just another form of bullying?

And she is a friend. But really?

Aliantha 06-29-2011 09:42 PM

I don't think it's bullying. Those statuses are just the same as all the 'pass this on or you're going to grow big pimples on your arse' type emails. Just ignore them if you don't like them. Some of them are ok, but others get a bit old after a while.

Having plenty of teenagers on my fb, I see a lot of this stuff.

Crimson Ghost 06-29-2011 10:26 PM

Isn't using the "Quote" button the same as "cut & paste"?

/My flame war, let me drag you into it....

limey 06-30-2011 03:36 AM

Monster - I ignore most of them, and have put up the odd spoof to show my scorn, but just sometimes I'll do as I'm asked for people who I know have a real, personal reason ...

Spexxvet 06-30-2011 07:44 AM

ur sew nt kewl:p:

casimendocina 06-30-2011 07:55 AM

Was just looking at fb and came across this - which is the first spoof I'd seen. Love it.

Quote:

Please copy and paste this as your status if you know someone, or have heard of someone who knows someone. If you don't know anyone, or even if you've heard of anyone who doesn't know anyone, then do still copy this. It's important to spread the message, even if no-one knows anything about anyone. Oh, and the hearts. ♥ ♥...
For goodness sake, don't forget the hearts. ♥
If your 'friends' take you to task/subject you to some kind of unpleasant and unnecessary behaviour for not pasting this kind of message on your wall, then perhaps the term bullying could be applied, but surely people should be able to evaluate each of these messages for own merits (or lack thereof) and not just post blindly.

Thanks. You've just invalidated my internet raison d'etre in one swipe.

Woah, wait, what? How'd you do that, casi?

casimendocina 06-30-2011 08:39 AM

Let's wait a bit and see if he's still speaking to me. :D

Is that hard to do?;)

infinite monkey 06-30-2011 08:51 AM

what link? Are you talking about FB?

infinite monkey 06-30-2011 08:54 AM

The little arrow thingy when you quote someone.

Stormieweather 06-30-2011 10:24 AM

I ignore all those status C&P things. There is one that bugs me, simply because my mom had a huge guilt button installed in her children, and it says something like...IF YOU LOVE JESUS...THIS IS A TEST OF YOUR LOVE FOR GOD...IF YOU DON'T PASTE THIS...something somethign something, probably I'm going to hell for ever and ever and ever. :mad2:

To put someone's quote under someone else's name, just multi-quote, then remove the quote symbols in between the name and the quote you want credited.

Perry Winkle 06-30-2011 02:50 PM

I had to steal Casi's C&P message.

I can't hardly stand to look at Facebook. Now I'm defecting (read: defecating) and moving to Google+.

glatt 06-30-2011 02:51 PM

Are you on Google+ already? How do you like it?

I'm going to try it out as soon as I can.

Aliantha 06-30-2011 05:24 PM

I scoffed the first time I read this one:

Quote:

How do you expect kids to listen to their parents when Tarzan lives half naked, Cinderella comes home at midnight, Pinocchio lies all the time, Aladdin is the king of thieves, Batman drives at 200 mph, Sleeping Beauty is lazy, and Snow White lives with 7 guys. We shouldn't be surprised when kids misbehave, they get it from their story book. Copy this on your wall if you laughed - I did :)

Pico and ME 06-30-2011 07:50 PM

Is scoffed used differently in Australia?

Aliantha 06-30-2011 11:19 PM

It's like a laugh that's stiffled. Or at least that's one definition. There's the one about not really believing what you're seeing or being told, but that wasn't the definition I was using.

What Ali said, but I'd add when you snort (however quietly) in disbelief at something or say "you've got to be kidding" (either to yourself or outloud).

How would the Stateside dwellars use it?

Pico and ME 07-01-2011 08:01 AM

Usually to disregard with derision, which I pretty much figured Ali wasn't doing.

That is what I do. Or I just delete that post if I don't want to see it on my news feed.

Still trying to figure out how anon I can be on it. They want to link everything back to your EM and I am not big on that since my Google is my main one. I have one on Yahoo just for shopping, one Earthlink for business and serious shit. I may try it but only after I come up with a new Gmail address as an experiment. What do you think?

Well I have toyed with Google+ for a few days. It has some nicer bells and whistles but I think it also has some major privacy issues.

Welcome to Facebook - the place where relationships are perfect, liars believe they are telling the truth, and the world shows off they are living a good life. where your enemies visit your profile the most and your friends and family delete and block you. Even though you post what you really think, someone takes it the wrong way. If you agree post on your wall!

classicman 11-03-2011 11:10 PM

Dunno if its true or not, but ...
Quote:

A teacher in New York was teaching her class about bullying and gave them the following exercise to perform. She had the children take a piece of paper and told them to crumple it up, stomp on it and really mess it up but do not rip it. Then she had them unfold the paper, smooth it out and look at how scarred and dirty it was. She then told them to tell it they’re sorry. Now even though they said .........they were sorry and tried to fix the paper, she pointed out all the scars they left behind. And that those scars will never go away no matter how hard they tried to fix it. That is what happens when a child bully’s another child, they may say they’re sorry but the scars are there forever. The looks on the faces of the children in the classroom told her the message hit home. Copy and paste this if you are against bullying!See More

"Bullying" isn't quite the right term.

"Mindlessly forwarding on pseudo-poignant statements" is, however. And you'll find it is the same people who used to send email forwards, back in the day (the day before we built a ceremonial bonfire and then threw all the forwaders we could find on top of it, like Odin demanded).
