May 10, 2011: One body two heads

Quote:

Twins are often close, but few are as close as the conjoined twins born in China on Thursday. The girls - who were transferred from a hospital in Sichuan province to one in Chongqing - have two heads but share a single body.

The local Huaxi Metropolis Daily reported the twins weighed 9 pounds and measured 20 inches. They have two arms, two legs, two spines, and two esophaguses but share other organs.

The twins are believed to suffer from dicephalic parapagus, the Daily Mail reported. That's a condition in which a fertilized egg fails to fully divide, and it's extremely rare.

How rare? The condition occurs once in every 50,000 to 100,000 births, according to a medical literature review published in 2005. In part because of anatomical problems, about 40 percent of conjoined twins are stillborn, and 35 percent die within the first 24 hours of life.

I hope one of them doesn't snore... or chew gum.

glatt 05-10-2011 06:50 PM

Well, two heads are better than one, right?

footfootfoot 05-10-2011 07:03 PM

We're gonna need two apples for this recipe.

SPUCK 05-11-2011 05:09 AM

So which brain runs the autonomic system? Wow.

Wait! How does that fit out the birth canal?!#8@#&_!#^&%$#!!!!

monster 05-11-2011 07:07 AM

The head on the right as we look at them seems dominant.

Trilby 05-11-2011 07:19 AM

Nope. Thank God it wasn't mine.

Clodfobble 05-11-2011 07:55 AM

Man, some people will do anything to get around China's "one child" policy.

[/tasteless]

footfootfoot 05-11-2011 11:43 AM

Exceptionally large population = more chances of billion-to-one outcomes.

I feel sorry for the parents most of all.
The little girls are as yet unaware that they are one of nature's cruel jokes, the parents are fully cognisant. And probably looking back with nostalgia on the days when the local hillside was an option.

[/insensitive]

glatt 05-11-2011 12:07 PM

Clicking through to the link, the doctors/nurses taking care of the twins seem to be wearing expressions of disgust. Although maybe it's concern. Looks like disgust though.

Pete Zicato 05-11-2011 02:04 PM

I don't see disgust. Concern with a little "Oh Fuck", thrown in.

footfootfoot 05-11-2011 02:10 PM

and a tad of "eww, don't touch it."

Apparently the parents chose to give the twins up pretty much as soon as they were born. They said they couldn't afford to look after such severely disabled children.

Also, according to the report Doctors believe it is extremely unlikely that there would be any way of successfully separating them.

I still feel sorry for them. The death of a newborn is traumatic enough - but giving birth to a live baby with such an extreme mutation and knowing you've left it alive with strangers could at least equal that.

And no, I honestly can't believe they could be separated.
Even if they decided one human brain had more value than the other - some Doctors have to make those choices after all - the sheer task of replumbing would be prohibitive. I don't mean to be glib, just couldn't think of a better way to describe the diverting and restructuring of all the various vessels and muscles and tubes etc.

Left alone the child must surely die; one heart two brains - how could the circulatory system cope? It seems to me the kindest thing to do is let it go gently into that good night.

DanaC 05-11-2011 04:17 PM

Oh I still feel sorry for them. I mean, what a fucking nightmare all round. That picture is a little window onto someone's personal hell (Not Clods, hers has higher flames ;P).

footfootfoot 05-11-2011 04:19 PM

and sulfur

ZenGum 05-11-2011 08:51 PM

There's a "one cup" joke here, but it is pretty awful.

Oh, you're not calling Glatt on it, though. Why do you hate me? You are being mean to me. It is not nice. I will ask Mr Undertoad to spray wasp spray on your posts.

You didn't win the writing contest fairly. You killed my landlord and then ate his breakfast. You are a bitter scorn person. I will get my writing trophy back and I will find hopkin.

Happy Monkey 05-12-2011 12:15 PM
