A Very Heaveh Burtation (Paraphasia...?)

I've seen this referred to as Paraphasia. I don't know, but this is the kind of thing you see happen on House. But then afterwards the person collapses and blood shoots out their nose. Well they checked this lady out, and apparently didn't find anything wrong with her.

I find it fascinating that this sounds like normal speech, i.e. the structure and format of the words and sentences sound very similar to normal speech. Like the specific part of her brain that access directories of syllables got slightly corrupt and started calling incorrect entries.

By her mannerisms she appears to try to segue as quickly as possible into the next segment. She appears accutely aware of, and distressed by the fact that the part of her brain that we assume will translate our thoughts into speech has inexplicably failed.

TIA?

You hope nothing is actually physically wrong with the woman, because if she wasn't having a seizure or stroke, it's then just funny.

sexobon 02-17-2011 03:28 AM

Good thing she wasn't reporting on Gabrielle Giffords' progress when it happened.

Perry Winkle 02-17-2011 08:09 AM

See the panic in her eyes before she starts the last sentence?

She almost gets the first and last parts of that last sentence right. It's clear enough that she's trying to give the cue to cut to the pre-recorded segment.

I was at an awards ceremony yesterday. The moderator was trying to say "the next award goes to a very deserving individual," but it came out as "the next award goes to a very disturbing individual." He tried but was unable to correct himself.

A while back I felt the onset of a migraine. I had a scheduled visit from IT to show me something whizzy on my PC and was desperately trying to hang on - partly because I really needed it, partly because I had plenty of friends in IT and knew how furious they were when people booked sessions and then simply cancelled.

It just got to the point where I knew it was a taxi home RIGHT THERE AND THEN or it was curtains for me. I tried to explain to my line manager how my vision was going, and confused the word mirror for window. I also tried to say half of my vision was fading and instead said half of my head had disappeared. The email I sent to IT I was able to read back word for word from my Sent folder the next day. I'd be lying if I said I remembered it, but it was essentially gibberish. I could work out what I was trying to say, but there were random inserted words and odd subtitutions.

It was all pretty scary, but I've never had a migraine hit me in that particular way since. The one that gave me a numb arm didn't come back either. or the one that made white explosions in the corner of the room. My mind likes to mess with me.

I agree UT - if she's okay it's pretty funny.
Good catch Flint, BTW doesn't everyone on House collapse and shoot blood out of their nose? Even when it's a groin strain?

It was a complex migraine, not a heavy burtation after all

Interesting. Well you can refer to it as a complex migraine, but I prefer to think of it as a very heaveh burtation.

Undertoad 02-17-2011 03:17 PM

It's now officially funny!

Flint 02-17-2011 03:32 PM

:::huge sigh of relief:::

Sundae 02-17-2011 03:34 PM

Yay! I get an answer thanks to a website linking to someone on TV!
My case was over ten years ago, and I stopped worrying fairly soon afterwards, but nice to know all the same.

For me, the only constant migraine symptom is believing that this is a brain tumour and I am going to die. Which swiftly becomes the hope that it IS a brain tumour because I am in such pain I want to die. The added symptoms are just grist to the mill.

Flint 02-17-2011 03:39 PM

Sundae, type up some crazy shit! lol

Sundae 02-17-2011 03:51 PM

I have an ongoing migraine.
Or Tourettes.

Shit, fuck, shit-fuck-cunt-piss.
Mirror.

When I was a teenager I used to get migraines like that. My brain just didn't function properly, and yeah, wishing to die was common for me too. Mum and Dad were always ringing the doc for a house call to give me a shot to put me to sleep till the worst was over.

Dad took me to see an chinese guy for accupuncture and I barely had a headache for 10 years after that. Awesome.

By the way, Yahoo answers educates us:
"Burtation : When a black mustache is coupled with a gray head of hair."

The example below is very heavy Burtation, but he also has some darist-darison, around the eyes in particular.

Or you could refer to that as the "Bolt Action" moustache.

A hermaphrodite with diphallic terata. Not something you see every day. Unless you have it of course.

Until the migraine theory was presented, I was going to suggest cocaine.

I would have had a heart attack long before I got to that point. I don't know how folks do it.

Natural selection at work. The ones with weaker hearts blow them out in the first couple months of using.

And then, if you're famous, they blame it on other things.
