80s ballads

I just wanted to remind anyone who opens this thread about 80s ballads, as I still think they are awesome.

Currently listening to Eddie Money.

What's your favorite 80s song?

jimhelm 12-03-2010 08:01 AM

Sundae 12-03-2010 01:33 PM

Jim - vid not avilable in my country :(

Kyrie - Mr Mister.
I can admit I still love this...

..can't I?
The key change. It's always the key change. Or the bridge.

Wax - Building a Bridge to your Heart
Ballad? Mebbe not. But pure 80s.

I used to sing along to :
I'll take you any was I can tonight
Come back and satisfy my appetite
You gotta know you mean that much to me
To get you back you know I'll do anything
(HORN!)

I was a virginal 15yo but I knew exactly what was meant and I craved it...

Shawnee123 12-03-2010 01:51 PM

Cheesy, but cool as hell. I could do without Springsteen, but that's just me.

Sundae 12-03-2010 02:05 PM

Ewwwwwwwwwwww.
Sorry, Shaw. It makes my teeths hurt.

In return, the one below makes the hairs on my arms stand up.
No really - it's on Christmas compilations (profits still going to charity) and it stops me still every time. Some things we never grow out of...?

I accept it might have the same effect on you as yours does on me.
Especially as you won't recognise many of the peeps (as I didn't in yours).
But then my neice & nephew would be hard pushed to name more than one in either :)
Philistines

I could amuse you by trying to name them (We Are The World I mean)...
Having watching it three times I've realised I might be able to put MORE names to it than I can to Do They Know It's Christmas... but in Bob Geldof's defence he simply sent out a call to whoever was available that Sunday.
It's possible even he didn't know some of the people who turned up :)

freshnesschronic 12-03-2010 03:57 PM

Really Sundae? I love We are the World....awesome song. Especially the chorus by MJ.....Lionel, Stevie Wonder, Steve Perry, Bob Dylan, Ray Charles?

Maybe it's cause its all Americans, but all American music legends :)

wolf 12-03-2010 09:37 PM

I loves me a metal ballad.

wolf 12-03-2010 09:41 PM

I adored Do They Know It's Christmas, despised We are the World for it's band-wagonness (and it was an insipid song).

I watched the documentary that ran on MTV over and over, could not afford the VHS at the time. My sister had the LP.

I used to be able to name everyone on it, can't any longer. Getting older, you know.

skysidhe 12-03-2010 10:16 PM

I like those 80's songs SG. I love the rock and metal ballads the best.

I almost posted ,'Mama I'm Coming Home', or No More Tears, Or 'Changes' but decided on this one.

I love Ozzy, Lita Ford is awesome too.

Spexxvet 12-04-2010 09:42 AM

No Brian Ferry, according to wiki

kerosene 12-04-2010 11:25 AM

I love that one, sky. This is one It reminds me of:

skysidhe 12-04-2010 11:38 AM

I love Bowie Kerosene. I have that movie. I would love to have the soundtract. Mostly, I would just love to have Bowie.

kerosene 12-04-2010 11:41 AM

Me too. I grew up on that movie and I own it also. Bowie is a strange character, but there is something appealing about him.

skysidhe 12-04-2010 11:52 AM

Now days he just looks like a middle aged man.Not so different than anyone without the stage makeup. Still appealing.
To me anyway. Lately, I am most interesting in hearing the VH1 Storytellers.
Latest work.http://www.vh1.com/photos/gallery/?f...514&dyn=artist

kerosene 12-04-2010 11:55 AM

Wow, he has normalled out a lot. He still has the wicked eyebrows.

skysidhe 12-04-2010 12:24 PM

yeah, I guess. He can just be himself. :)

Clodfobble 12-04-2010 03:30 PM

His cameo in Zoolander was awesome.

You think the eyebrows are more prominent/striking than the different colored eyes?

kerosene 12-04-2010 04:11 PM

No, I just think they are more wicked. He does have really striking eyes.

monster 12-04-2010 04:20 PM

the lighter stuff

monster 12-04-2010 04:21 PM

totally wussy (played at our wedding)

Pico and ME 12-04-2010 04:24 PM

:greenface

I love his Stay With Me Tonight, though.

monster 12-04-2010 04:24 PM

Is this a ballad?

yeah, I don't play it any more, but then I don't play many ballads any more.....

(except for shinedown, second chance)

kerosene 12-04-2010 05:11 PM

I think that is a ballad, monster. Here was one for the jr high dances.

Sundae 12-05-2010 07:02 AM

Yay Monster!
I loved the first three - John Parr, John Farnham, Don Henley

Did you ever watch No Limits?
Back when Jonathan King was just odd and not a paedo (that we knew about anyway).
Another from that era

I loved Greg Phillinganes' version of Behind the Mask too - better than Eric Calpton's imho

And how can I allow an 80s thread to pass without a mention of my special boys :)
Crowded House - Don't Dream It's Over

Sundae 12-05-2010 07:14 AM

Oh and.... how could I forget?

Practically my first female crush. Excepting the Bangles of course.
(Damn - gotta find a song from them now too...)

Roam sneaks in under the radar, being 1989.
I love Love Shack of course, but this was always "my" song.
To the extent that everyone who knew me, thought about me when it came on.
That's teen success right there.

Shit - these aren't ballads are they?
But I just flat adored them, to the extent I sing them in the shower or the emplty house to this day. It's harder to be winsome when you're overweight and over 30, but indulge me... please?

Susanna Hoffs - melt. Michael Steele, double melt fantasy

Undertoad 12-05-2010 12:13 PM

Michael Steele was always my favorite Bangle for no particular reason. So tall and unique looking.

The Bangles suffered when all (?) their singles were written by other people. They could write a fine single themselves and must have lost huge millions of dollars by recording everyone else's songs. "Going Down to Liverpool" was originally a Katrina and the Waves song.

No, JK always gave me the skeeves.

loved that until it made it on to the 1-hour playlist at Chelsea Girl where I worked. now i have horrendous flashbacks when i hear it.

Pico and ME 12-05-2010 06:37 PM

One of my favorites from the 80's...

D'oh! I though the guy from Spandau was the guy from Ultravox - I always confuse those two.

I will reference this as why, as an 80's couple, Pete and I went with a bluegrass band for our wedding. :)

skysidhe 12-11-2010 10:48 AM

Original release in the 80's
This is the 2000 version. He's still so handsome.

Sundae 12-11-2010 01:38 PM

The song I half-remember is driving me crazy.
In fact I only remember about 0.01% of it, hence the craziness.

So here is some T'Pau.
I remember where I was when I first heard this song (in the cinema) and was blown away. A woman TALKING and SINGING! And she has gorgeous red hair! Wow. Many of my fave 80s songs are to do with crushes on female singers I'm afraid :joylove:

I knew this album by heart, anyway

So this one isn't a lady - just has an 80s mullet.
Never saw the video - nowhere to see it really.
But I listened to the radio every day (still do, just not music radio) and I adored this song. We went on a school trip to Alton Towers (theme park) and it came on when we were on the coach. I was convinced it was an omen. My favourite waste of time was on the coach in front. Well, it took 4-5 years, but the omen proved right... I did snog him.
