Oct 29, 2010: Lunch On The Run
Actually, lunch on the hoof, on the run.
The poor Bear was having lunch, and just went to the bathroom because he remembered he hadn't washed his paws. When he came back, he found his lunch had taken it on the lam, but he'd catch it again, you betcha. http://cellar.org/2010/bear_bison.jpg Quote:
Besides you're 800 lbs now, and that's not politically correct. Setting a bad example for the cubs, you know. link EDIT ~ See post 32 for the whole story. |
AND they're both on the wrong side of the road.
I recall we had a bear related IotD a while back, A new(ish) poster was defending bears, "they mostly eat nuts and berries and stuff, the claw are for digging worms...". I guess the buffalo owes him money. |
That's pretty gross.. Where's my Uzi so I can put them both out of my misery.
|
Could we please have some happy IotDs? I know it's hard to do and a pain and I DO appreciate your efforts, bruce. I DO!
But, honey, life is hard enough as it is - could we please have some happy pics for a week? Nature, while red in tooth and claw, can also be uplifting! Pretty please? |
"That's pretty gross.. Where's my Uzi so I can put them both out of my misery. "
Just doin' their jobs. |

I guess I've got to come out there, and personally make you happy. |

Has anyone seen the post around the polar bear coming to play with sleigh dogs as oppossed to ripping them to pieces? I was feeling all warm and fuzzy about that and bears in general. After seeing, this no longer.

Sort of dining twice on a Bison.
|
"You're not in this for the hunting, are you?"
|
Foot, you're bad. :haha:

You have outdone yourself Bruce, jaw dropping good. I am amazed.

"A bison that talented and intelligent, you don't eat him all at once."

That Badass Bear looks as if he's having a great time. A bit of jog and then when he's bored, he'll strike.

Any bear that has gone hungry for awhile, or is preparing to hibernate and needs more fat, is a much more aggressive animal. I've seen video's/pics of two other amazing friendships among animals: 1) The snake that bonded with a mouse or hamster, that was put into his cage, as dinner. The rodent actually rested right on top of the snake's coiled up body. I'm guessing the snake was enjoying the rodent's extra bit of warmth, but just a guess. 2) Three cheetah siblings ran down a very young Tommy gazelle, licked it's neck and head, and then let it go. Very unusual, indeed. |
We had the cheetah pictures here. Turns out they were just tasting that Gazelle in the pictures, they ate it later.
|
The Daily Mail made up that fairy tale story of the cheetahs letting it go! That's such a blatant lie - but more in character for predators, surely.
Well, that leaves the mouse with the snake, some "new mothers" that will nurse other young'uns, and the polar bears who play with the dogs. And the heck with the bears and the snakes! ;) |
It wasn't just the Mail, those pictures, with the same story, were all over the internet for a week or more, before the photographer came forth with the whole story. Those youngsters were being taught to hunt and didn't quite get it yet. They would catch it and mouth the neck, but didn't have the clamping off the windpipe perfected.

This is fast food at its best.
Imagine the discipline to allow ones self to be eaten in the hopes for an escape. |
By the look if its injuries, I dont think the Bison had a chance...in fact, it would probably end up enduring a long miserable death.
|
When the buffalo left the herd, his mama said....
.... bye son. |
The photographer has confirmed that the bison DID "out maneuver" the grizzly and escape - but to no avail. He had to be killed the very next day by the rangers, because his injuries from being burned, were too severe.
The reason the bison looks so "cooked" in the photo's, is that he had fallen into one of the hot springs in the area, and was badly burned before he got out. |
So the bear just wanted a warm meal?

I learned it from you.

http://billingsgazette.com/lifestyle...=image&photo=1 the photographer said the Bison had been burned in one of the area's many hot SPOTS, not hot springs. His description of the event is here: http://www.krtv.com/news/grizzly-ver...-of-the-story/ |
Excellent, we love it when a member/reader can point us to the whole story. :notworthy
|
Yeah, that makes a whole lot more sense to the picture. Thanks Adak.
|
Thanks Adak! I'm surprised that the bison could out maneuver a grizzly in the woods, although I'd guess the bear is a stronger sprinter so maybe he got gassed on the road catching up and had nothing left when they left the macadam.
|
I'm glad I came back to this IOTD one more time. Bruce's initial introduction was funny, but not necessarily meant to be factual.
I kept coming back to the post and having continuing difficulty matching the bison's injuries with a bear attack, especially since one is seldom prey for the other. The true story and outcome are much easier to believe. I agree that it is important for Cellar folks to keep after an image until discrepancies and misinterpretations are worked out. Good job. And may I add Good Job Giants!! |
Yeah, when I was interpreting those red areas on its legs as maul wounds, I had a hard time figuring out how it was standing, let alone running. Burning makes more sense.
|
I couldn't figure out how that buffalo could be mauled that much, both sides, and get away, unless the bear went to wash his hands. They usually don't go wash up until lunch is cooling. :yesnod:
