I can't quite get into it this year...probably if I were in better spirits, I might enjoy it more.

That's okay though, b/c Thanksgiving is less than a month away, and Rho and I are putting on a buffet at our Palatial Estate. Then, Xmas in Baltimore...and hopefully Dave, Jenni, Rho, and I can partake in pad gai...and I can get that crabcake dinner out of Hubris. :)

perth 10-31-2002 02:52 PM

i didnt get into it like last year. i didnt dress up or decorate as i usually do. but i really do love having the piss scared out of me, so im gonna watch a bunch of scary movies tonight. im priming myself for it by reading ghost stories while i should be working. even if you dont celebrate, i hope its a pleasant evening for you.

dave 10-31-2002 03:22 PM

you know... this should probably be in another thread but... we should have a Cellar get-together.

It could be next summer, when Jen and Paul are in town... Jenni, Paul, myself and Jen will day-trip up to Philly. Tony's already there, sycamore and Rho... plus all of the other Philadelphians in the area. perth and his woman could fly out, Hubris could bring some guns up... we'd have a big fucking barbeque and a jolly old time. That would be some good stuffs.

perth 10-31-2002 03:29 PM

i would be down with taking a trip to philadelphia. i was already thinking about being on that side of the country anyways this coming summer (i have family in ohio).

The best Halloween scare that I was involved in was when we had just moved into our "haunted house" on the lake.

All the neighborhood kids thought the house was haunted anyway, because it hadn't been occupied for five years. The house was huge and set way back on a 4 acre parcel, so it was pretty spooky just walking up to the house in the dark.

We suited up my 6'3'' brother inside a real 8' Grizzly bear rug and sat him outside on the dimly lit porch. Just as the kids arrved, my brother would stand up and growl.

A few parents nearly had heart attacks. Folks were falling down in fear. The kids were great. It scared them so much none of them told their buddies what we were up to, except that we were giving out great treats and that it was really worth the long walk down the driveway.

What was your scariest Halloween experience?

First things first Shepps...Krispy Kreme on Bustleton opens up next Thursday. You should come down here for donuts and coffee one weekend.

People keep mentioning GTGs, but they never seem to come together. We should do one though...hell, we should convince Jag to come up to Philadelphia so that his fear of every one with a gun can be dispelled. Then, we can all fight about Israel and beat each other senseless. ;)

Hubris, the meal will be one of the best kinds...a free one. ;) We'll be in Baltimore for 6 days (Dec. 24-29)...I think.

Undertoad 10-31-2002 08:34 PM

Hit me in private mail man, and we will work out the donutty plan.

What happens is Brian tries to call one for when he's in town, and nobody is ever free then.

Cool. I'll bring a gun. :-) Or several. Busleton isn't too far.

That could be arranged.

Maybe MaggieL and I will arrange an All-Cellar Mason-Dixon Marksmanship event, open to all Dwellars. Winner gets final bragging rights for one year, and also gets to have the last word in any thread that involves the discussion of firearms or military ordnance!

I'll bring my Desert Eagle.

Brian, you are so damned inconvenient. ;)

There have been other calls as well--last September, when NBN was in town (and we left poor Mitch out in the cold), and last April.

Of course, the problem now is that there are less than a dozen of us regulars posting from the Philadelphia area. To do a "true" gathering would almost have to be a convention now--we'd have to rent a room at the Wyndham and buy up a whole block of hookers. Then we'd have to cause chaos on South Street and overturn a car.

Well, fewer folks locally should make it *easier* to schedule a GTG than if there were more.

And...do you really want *one* room and a *block* of hookers? Or a block of rooms and one hooker?

dave 10-31-2002 10:07 PM

I can't justify the expense of a Desert Eagle. You have a .45 or a .50? Aren't the .50 rounds ~$1?

Then maybe we should form chapters. We have enough here for an Eastern Pennsylvania chapter. There are enough folks in Texas and Minnesota for chapters of their own. :)

My bad...a conference room. We would need a conference or banquet room. As far as hotel rooms, we'd probably need several.

But we'd still need a block of hookers. ;)

Undertoad 10-31-2002 10:28 PM

I think I could afford everything EXCEPT for the digital camera I'd want to record it all, and the extra memory cards.

Like a lot of things, ammo prices are sharply dependent on the volume you're buying in.

Also on demand; there's a lot of people carrying/shooting .45 ACP ($15/box for 20 Cor-Bon +P 165 grain jacketed hollow points) whereas .50 AE is pretty much a round for movie stars and size queens. 20 rounds of that (325 Grains, Speer Gold Dot Hollow Point) will indeed run you $20 when it's not on sale.

(.454 Casull is up there too; a box of 20 rounds of Cor-Bon 320 grain Casull will cost you $30. And make your wrist and shoulder hurt too.)

My approach is: carry a 9mm auto with a 12-round magazine, and shoot double-taps. This way, you can either put 250 gr into the target (assuming a self-defense round, most of your ammo costs are for full-metal jacket practice amm o anyway, $10 or less for 50 rounds) or settle for a single 125 gr bullet but spreak them out across twice as many targets. That 9mm slug is probably moving at a higher MV too...

Flexibility is good.

You know, i've never even seen a Krispy Kreme. Do they really exist?

dave 11-01-2002 05:49 AM

juju - Yes, they do.

9mm for CC is probably reasonable and wise. Not too big, not so much recoil - so you can get off 2 shots quickly and accurately.

What make/model do you carry? I've always had a strong liking for Glock, myself, but... just curious what other people are carrying.

What I carry

1 Attachment(s)
Baretta Model 20 - 25 calibre

Actually too small for Texas concealed carry laws, but I do anyway.

Inaccurate as hell over 10 yards, probably would only piss off a wacked out speed freak.

But, the psychological advantage is priceless if you have it when you need it... fortunately I've never needed it.

Glocks are indeed very nice.

But a used Kel-Tec P-11 found its way into my life (we're still not spending money we don't have to around here) though a barter deal with a local gun shop, and It's what I carry. The P-11 was designed to accept Smith & Wesson 5900 and 6900 series magazines, so 12 and 15 round pre-ban mags are fairly easy to come by.

A 12-round mag with grip extension and finger rest vastly improves the steadiness of the hold; otherwise I'd only be able to get two fingers on the grip. And with the gun itself only weighing 14 oz unloaded, a firm grip is necessary if the slide is to operate reliably. Mine has a black polymer grip and a "belt" clip (usually used with a waistband or pocket).

Kel-Tec made the same gun chambered for a .40 S&W, but they've withdrawn it because too many people limpwristed it and then returned it as defective. With a very light frame, a lot of the push to compress the slide spring to chamber the next round has to come from the shooter's grip;there's very little inertia in 14 oz.

Yes, there definately are Krispy Kremes. They're insanely good.

Probably. It is a bit of a mousegun. Kel-Tec makes a nice .32 auto you might want to look at. People still call even that a spitwad though

BrianR 11-01-2002 12:10 PM

I'm a Glock convert myself. I carry one whenever I can, but I also hold my dear old .45 close.

Nothing like a Para-Ordnance P-14 with pre-ban mags weighing you down when you're in a bad situation that you can't handle any other way.

All Glock and no Cock

Trying to relate all this Glock Talk to the "Happy Halloween" thread topic ...

I guess it's fair to say that, if we lived in Davy Crockett land instead of Canada, my brother would be dead.

Neither. Mine's a .44. I have a first generation IMI Desert Eagle, made before the Israelis licensed the design to Magnum Research. They came in .357, .41 (God only knows why), .44, and .50 AE. I don't think they ever made one chambered for .45 ACP, did they?

You're right, though. .50 AE ammo is pretty expensive... .44 Magnum rounds are only marginally less so. That's why I handload. ;)

Could be. Maybe down here you would have been smart enough not to pull such a stunt. Maybe not.

We do have bears down here. I think most of us are smart enough not to try to take on even a brown bear (much less a grizzly) with a handgun. It takes a *very* lucky shot to stop a bear with a handgun.

Would you have thought it was a cute stunt if you'd actually managed to cause a heart attack?

Nic Name 11-01-2002 09:51 PM

Nope.
