10/25/02: No water

My apartment complex has had no water since yesterday afternoon. Supposedly, a major water line has busted, forcing the landlord to turn the water off.

This wouldn't be so bad, except for the fact that I work at a pizza place. I come home reeking of pizza every other day. Last night I had to wash myself using a sponge and bucket of water that I borrowed from work. Because of this, I only kind of smell like pizza, as opposed to knocking people unconcious with my unbearable stench. So, I didn't feel too bad going to class, though I tried to sit apart from people.

This apartment comes with gas and water paid. So, my conspiracy theory is that the landlords just missed their payment and the water company turned the water off. Either way I can't do anything about it but wait.

The other thing that bothers me is that the landlords never actually tell us anything. The only way I ever find anything out is via little notes at the bottom of the stairs. This is pretty lame, I think. I know there are a lot of apartments, but I'd at least like a call or something.

My wife just called the water company, and they said they know nothing about a water line bursting. They are now investigating for us.

I smell a rat.

haha! get 'em juju!

i fucking hate my landlord. just found out myself that ive got another weekend down the drain because my landlords too fucking cheap to replace the washer and dryer "no, no, cheaper just to fix em again!" (and again and again and again).

Ok, the water's back on.

I really think that the landlord turned the water off to save money. I like to think that after Kathy's phone call, the water company gave them a vicious talking to.

At Woodstock, there was no acceptable running water. So from Wednesday morning until Tuesday afternoon, I had no shower.

Man, that Monday though... that was the greatest shower that ever was.

I imagine you're feeling kinda like that now. :)

Perhaps he means the second Woodstock?

You've only gone a week without a shower?

Puss.

Unless my arithmetic is off, the second Woodstock *was* when he was 13. The first one was over a decade before he was born.

dave 10-26-2002 11:23 AM

Maggie's right. I made it all up! :)

No, I was at the third Woodstock, which was from July 12 - 15, 1999. I was 18.

I watched the second one on Pay Per View. :) My parents wouldn't let me go, and probably rightly so. :)

dave 10-26-2002 11:26 AM

And I'm not saying that a week is some kinda record... but when you're trading sweat with hundreds of other people every band you see (and there were a lot)... and walking around in the sun... and you have about 3 feet of hair... well, let's just say that I got pretty filthy.

Jeff and I, who had gone up together, didn't realize each other's smell the whole way home - we had the windows down, and we both reeked, so we were used to it. But when I got into my house and there was fresh, clean air in my nostrils... good LORD did I reek.

dave 10-26-2002 11:27 AM

And by the way, I make no claim that either the second or third Woodstock events were as cool as the first. I know, I'm a whippersnapper, but I can appreciate the originality of the first.

And this also confirms I'm an old fart, since I had no idea there had been a *third* Woodstock.

Say what one will, the Philly Folk Festival always has plenty of water. Campers are on their own for *showers* of course....although many do use solar-heated shower bags. Some years there's enough insolation to use them, other years not.

Geez, Maggie... the FIRST Woodstock is soo 1960's!

Not by much...August 15-17 1969. There were only four months left in the decade.

Of course, some people hold that The Sixties lasted until Nixon resigned in 1974.

Seriously Maggie? You don't recall the shit from Woodstock '99, up at the old air force base? Fucked-up porta potties? Incredibly expensive food and water? Fires on the last night? (Dave probably knows first-hand.)

Juju, what the fuck kind of place do you live in? It sounds like your landlord is a slumlord. Are you currently in a lease, or is it a month to month deal?

16oz of water: $4.00
20oz of Pepsi: $4.00
Equivalent of a Pizza Hut "small" thin & crispy, just cheese: $12.00
Hot dog: $4.00
Hamburger: $4.00
Cheeseburger: $5.00
Veggie burger: $7.00
Bag of ice: $20.00 (no shit)

6" Subway sandwich: $4.00 (incidentally, this is what I ate - best deal for the money BY FAR).

As far as porta potties... uh, you had to wade through 6" deep fields of piss and shit to get to them, thanks to a bunch of 'em getting spilled. No way. I relieved my bladder on the tree by our tent and I didn't even consider taking a dump until I got home.

I didn't partake in the fires or looting, but they were starting to build by the time we headed out (after the Chili Peppers' set on Sunday night). Actually, that was about the time that all hell broke loose. Basically, everyone was irritated that it was really basically Profitstock and all the vendors were interested in was raping our wallets. I managed to get by only spending some $75 there and about $100 in preparation (plus $160 or so for the ticket). Lots of people dropped boatloads more. It was truly sickening, seeing the prices, but I guess they're really about standard these days.

Thankfully, the water that was free was piss warm, which tasted cold in 110 degree heat. Brad bought me a Citra for helping him make a food trip; it was almost too cold to drink.

It was a lot of fun being there, but it sucked too. All in all, I'm glad I went - but I will be infinitely better prepared next time one rolls around.

But, I have so many things. So many heavy things. And I live on the third floor!

Truly, I don't. It doesn't sound like it was a lot different from Woodstock II, except possibly a lot less violent.

But then I had other things on my mind in the summer of '99...my surgery had pretty much healed up and the results were becoming operational. I guess I just wasn't paying attention. :-)
