Flint/Pooka Florida (Posted via Blackberry)

Driving from Texas to Florida, Nat'l Lampoon-style. Staying at an Atlantic-side timeshare resort for one week.

Found out that every hotel room in Alabama is full...due to the oilspill? Not sure why Louisiana and Mississippi are not affected but Alabama is? Had to drive 20 miles back to Miss. to get a room.

Visited the USS Alabama (photos to follow) and next night stopped in Florida, north. I continue to see Mexican restaurants...?

Driving on south now, and have just logged onto the Cellar for the 1st time on my BB!

Spexxvet 06-05-2010 09:37 AM

May you have an oil free vacation. Please send us some bikini pictures of Pooka.

Flint 06-05-2010 10:10 AM

We'll see...

Btw the BB saves URLs as a link in the messages folder & the Cellar is set to "remember me" so I am all set!

Shawnee123 06-05-2010 10:29 AM

Holiday road!

Have fun, post pics.

Flint 06-05-2010 11:39 AM

Florida Turnpike South: exits say "Sunpass Only, CASH NOT ACCEPTED" & "$100 Toll Fines, Photo Enforced"

Ummm... what if I don't have a Sunpass? I can never get off this road?

Flint 06-07-2010 10:59 AM

The wifi here is unsecure (no WEP or anything...WTF?) & slow...which means I don't want to VPN into work (unsecure, as a sys admin) from here... & I may as well keep using my BB to update this thread.

The Atlantic is beautiful here. Cold, crystal clear, and full of little fishies that nip the dead skin off your toes. Many cool shells everywhere to collect and make necklaces.

We road a riverboat up the intercoastal waterway to a "tropical island" for all-you-can-eat BBQ ribs, chicken, & shrimp. And a little zoo with monkeys & alligators, etc.

Gonna have to use Canon Photostitch to put together some of the panoramic shots I am getting. Don't have it on the laptop, though.

classicman 06-07-2010 11:06 AM

Sounds like a great time - Looking forward to the pics!

skysidhe 06-07-2010 09:24 PM

I'm glad you guys are having a great time!

Trilby 06-08-2010 05:47 AM

Yay Flint and Pooka! Stimulate that economy! YAY!

Flint 06-08-2010 02:18 PM

Rode an airboat (with 2 Cadillac 472" V8s, direct drive to the props) through the Everglades today. Kids got to hold a baby alligator.

lumberjim 06-08-2010 04:12 PM

GO TO

Itookthisonmyphone.com and download the free application for your curve. then start putting up some pics, fool!

skysidhe 06-09-2010 09:23 PM

Way to go.

Now I'm thinking he won't post pics just to spite you.

The silver lining may be he might post pics just to prove me wrong.

:ipray:

I know. I know. He's just too busy having fun.

squirell nutkin 06-12-2010 08:42 AM

Without pictures this is seeming to be more like the Gaspard and Lisa story, "Lisa in the Jungle."

Flint 06-12-2010 04:05 PM

I ain't stoppin' to post pics while I'm still bein' on vacation!

But we did just stop at the Don Garlits Museum of Drag Racing.

Flint 06-12-2010 04:31 PM

Double post: just saw an all-you-can-eat KFC buffet...

Have you ever eaten a whole bucket of fried chicken and felt like you needed MORE?!

They used to have them here in PA. I went there a few times and then they shut them down.

Cause and effect?;)

We're set for going to Florida in the fall, about 10 miles north of Miami. A nice beach side timeshare. I'm hoping oil hasn't gotten there by then.

Flint 06-13-2010 11:46 AM

Atlantic? I hope the ocean is as beautiful for you as it was for us. On Friday, after a few relatively more choppy days (we had some "adventure" waves), it settled back down to where gentle waves were breaking against a little sand reef about 20 feet out, creating a shallow tidepool of warm water that the little ones could play "sea puppies" in.

Yes, but only because it comes out the other end faster than I can eat. :greenface

Sorry I haven't gotten the photos together, but here is an illustrated summary:

glatt 07-02-2010 10:42 AM

Nice.

What's that in the lower right hand corner where you have the 4 smiling faces looking at the big penis?

Shawnee123 07-02-2010 10:45 AM

I think that's the dream he teased us with earlier. The big penis belongs to...(fess up Flint.)

I love that illustration! How funny.

Flint 07-02-2010 10:45 AM

Oh, there was a jacuzzi tub in the suite. That's a picture of all 4 of us being able to fit in one tub.

Clodfobble 07-02-2010 01:42 PM

I can't figure out what the building (?) is in the middle of the bottom row. But other than that, it's very descriptive.

On the way to Florida, stopped at Battleship park on Mobile Bay, Alabama to see the USS Alabama, which was really cool because it looked like it was designed by a 10 year-old--it had guns poking out from everywhere! Also got to go inside a submarine, the USS Drum. Pictued below is the torpedo room (note the high-tech droplight aiming down the tube).

We get to the beautiful Atlantic Ocean and observe how big it is. Sometimes, an "adventure wave" gets you! Later, we talk about how these are called whitecaps. In the kite-flying picture, notice how we had the beach all to ourselves--we were getting up early and enjoying the beach before it got too hot! Pooka even got some nice sunrise shots.

Sugar Sand Park in Boca Raton, a three-story science playground. The first picture below gives you an idea of what I was drawing--a maze of wooden passageways. We went there three times during the week. There was the big park, an indoor science museum, and even a carousel.

Here, I built a little shrine where you crossed the sand bridge to place seashells and treasures on the sea altar. The kids (even kids that belonged to other people) really enjoyed decorating this thing, and it was intended as a lesson in Buddhist impermanence. Later, I noticed that it was the Flying Spaghetti Monster, so I added some noodley appendages.

We did everything sealife-themed on this vacation (mostly Pooka's planning in what toys, movies, etc. we brought) and we even watched JAWS. Pictured below (also from Sugar Sand Park in Boca Raton) you can see how the boy is just terrified of sharks.

Also pictured below is my ultimate sand fortress, and Pooka's amazing collection of seashell oddities.

On the day we started driving home, we saw this awesome orange dragster just driving down the road, parachute and all. Completely coincidentally, and 400 miles later, I saw a sign for the Don Garlits Museum of Drag Racing, in Ocala. Pictured below, my kids learn the truth about who "The King" is (not just a character from Disney/Pixar's Cars), and some oddities including a supercharged lawnmower and a dragster powered by a V-12 Allison engine from a World War II P-40 fighter plane (1700 cubic inches, produces 2000 HP on straight gasoline).

On the drive home, the girl nonchalantly reads a newspaper.

We finally make it back to Texas, and the kids are thrilled to be playing with their regular toys again.

glatt 07-06-2010 07:32 AM

Excellent vacation pics and commentary.

classicman 07-06-2010 07:37 AM

Wonderful pics. Looks like a good time was had by all.
Your kids are absolutely adorable.

Clodfobble 07-06-2010 07:40 AM

Morgi is especially rockin' that camo Crocodile Dundee hat.

Lamplighter 07-06-2010 09:33 AM

One of the few times I enjoyed watching someone's "vacation slides".

skysidhe 07-06-2010 11:12 AM

Finally some long awaited vacation pics in your "vacation thread" that has been collecting dust. It is great to see so many shots. The sunrise is amazing and we have a science playground and a carousel here that looks just like that. Almost.

It looks like you had a great time and like classic said, your kids are adorable.

zippyt 07-06-2010 03:13 PM

Good Pics !!

Shawnee123 07-06-2010 03:44 PM

Your kids look so much like both you and Pooka! Darling! :)

From the reflection I thought that was a pen in the girl's hand, I thought "she's not just reading a newspaper, she's doing the NYT crossword!"

Thanks for the pics.

Flint 07-06-2010 05:44 PM

Thank you for the positive comments, everybody.

Sorry about the crappy compression on some of these images, but I was experimenting with building vertical panoramas at a reasonable pixel width, and then compressing to a set KB limit with the RIOT plugin in Irfanview. Note that when there is no border, you are looking at a single image.

Look for more vacation photos to show up in other threads, as applicable.

jinx 07-06-2010 05:52 PM

Nicely done, love the beach pictures...

lumberjim 07-06-2010 07:29 PM

xoxoxoBruce 07-06-2010 11:12 PM

xoxoxoBruce 07-08-2010 10:42 PM

'Cept there's no Pooka in her bikini. :(

Pooka 07-09-2010 08:23 AM

Trust me... no one wants to see that... maybe next year

Shawnee123 07-09-2010 08:35 AM

Great pictures! I was a tad disappointed to not see Flint and Pooka in the pictures, but the kids were adorable to look at. It looks like the whole family had fun. :)

Cicero 07-17-2010 01:29 PM

NICE beeeeach! I wish I were there right now!!!!!

Pooka 07-19-2010 04:26 PM

Flint is in the last pic... but me... nooooo you don't want to see me in my swimmies... not yet anyway

Flint 07-19-2010 04:35 PM

I am in there a few times, but... I ƒucked up my wrists and wasn't able to workout properly during the time leading up to our vacation, so what you see here is a dehydrated, shrunken down version of the guy that was posting in the workout threads.

I beg to differ. But if you want to send some pics to the top male posters on the Cellar, we can help you make a decision.:D

Pooka 07-25-2010 05:58 PM

Awe... you guys are sweet... You might get to see some yet... I'm down 26lbs from where I was on that trip... so come close of summer I might make a NSFW post...;)

Flint 06-21-2011 10:01 PM

Oh, by the by, vacation 2011 and we are back at the same timeshare resort in Pomapano Beach, Florida.

This year my dad and step-mom flew in; we got a suite with two bedrooms and many, many, many bottles of Kraken.
