A fizzy drink. Frequently the Scots refer to it as "ginger", though.

Towards.

Rhianne 06-02-2010 07:44 PM

1 Settee
2 Fizzy drink (though as Limey says, most folk around here call it 'Ginger')
3 Towards

squirell nutkin 06-02-2010 07:55 PM

couch

tords

lumberjim 06-02-2010 11:08 PM

couch and sofa both

toward or towards depends on plurality of context....

your cars are pointed toward the finish line

your car is headed towards the finish line

Gravdigr 06-03-2010 02:30 AM

Couch/sofa
It's a Pepsi (that's what I drink), generically--it's a soda

Soda( soft drink sometimes about equal with refresicas)

glatt 06-03-2010 08:09 AM

To me, it's not the plurality of the subject, but whether there is movement. So I'd agree with both your example sentences: because toward means a certain direction while towards means actually moving in that direction. (To me, anyway--I'm not saying there's a grammatical rule about that...)

Trilby 06-03-2010 03:06 PM

couch

pop

two swords.

you may be onto something there. I noticed when i was making the example sentences that headed sounded better in the second one....

lumberjim 06-03-2010 03:53 PM

what would you say if my plane was on a treadmill flying in the direction of the finish line, but not actually moving because of the treadmill?

HungLikeJesus 06-04-2010 07:49 AM

Bed

Breakfast

I try to avoid that word.

I'd say "Holy shit, there's a plane on a treadmill!"

monster 06-04-2010 06:56 PM

sofa (US) with couch as second choice. Settee (UK)

um what was the second question? oh pop (US) fizzy drink (UK)

toward/towards depends on context, it's grammatical thing not a dialect thing.

HungLikeJesus 06-04-2010 09:26 PM

Actually, I say towards, but the s is silent.

monster 06-04-2010 09:30 PM

I say "Cellar" at the moment of orgasm ...but most of the letters are silent and some have an extended pronunciation.

wolf 06-05-2010 01:13 AM

Sofa.
Soda.

Tulip 06-05-2010 10:33 PM

What do you guys call the down/dacron filled thing thats on top of you in bed?

Doona.

Aliantha 06-06-2010 06:00 AM

I love my doona!

monster 06-07-2010 08:57 PM

duvet.

but merkins call them comforters and they're a bit different

jinx 06-07-2010 08:59 PM

Duvet. Comforters are different.

I prefer quilts.

skysidhe 06-07-2010 09:15 PM

I grandmother used to say, Davenport. I say sofa or couch. I would call something a settee if it was a little entry way thing or some other small type sofa. The kind you look at but never want to sit on unless you are swooning. :P

Interesting that I bought a duvet cover to put on my comforter. I bought a quilt for the patchwork design.

I go toward unless someone comes towards this way.

I drink soda pop.

Gravdigr 06-10-2010 08:08 AM

What covers the duvet?

monster 06-10-2010 10:17 AM

a duvet cover.

Sundae 06-10-2010 11:08 AM

Sofa (John Betjeman taught me not to say settee)
Soft drink if out, fizzy drink at home
Towards

And yes, a duvet goes on the bed, in a duvet cover.
But quilt is often used to mean the same.
And in most places, duvet is pronounced DOO-vay. Although I did know a lad from the West Country who called it a JEW-vay. But then he said tuth-brush as well.

ButButBut...If the duvet cover covers the comforter, the duvet cover also covers the duvet??? See, now I'm confrused?:3_eyes: The duvet cover is naked!

monster 06-11-2010 09:57 AM

right. nekkid. does that disturb you?

Cloud 06-11-2010 10:10 AM

I call mine a comforter, and I put a duvet cover on it. Sometimes, but they're usually too big and flop around and annoy me.

Oh, no, I'm fine with that...It's just that...well, you know...naked and all, it might get cold...
