2 random inquiries

1) how do you pronounce the word, "roof"?

I say both "rewf" and sometimes, "ruf"

(rhymes with hoof . . . no, wait, that word has the same problem. Uh . . . doesn't rhyme with "rough" . . . more of a schwa sound. doesn't rhyme with anything? kinda rhymes with French "oeuf")

2) how do you write your "7s"? With a line through or not?

I've written them with a line through ever since 6th grade when I had a teacher from New Zealand.

classicman 05-28-2010 10:21 AM

r-ewwwww-f
and no line

GunMaster357 05-28-2010 10:24 AM

I would pronounce roof like hoof, poof, spook...

But as I'm French, I may mispronounce.

And I write the "7" digit with a bar in the middle.

jinx 05-28-2010 10:24 AM

Roof - like boot, not like pussy.
7 - no line

lookout123 05-28-2010 10:25 AM

Geez, jinx. You have to relate everything to cats, don't you?

Undertoad 05-28-2010 10:26 AM

roof - rhymes with toof
no line in 7s, however! occasionally a diagonal slash in zeroes. (Comp sci major)

Pie 05-28-2010 10:42 AM

lumberjim 05-28-2010 10:53 AM

REWF, LINE

Cloud 05-28-2010 11:03 AM

not sure anyone pronounces "roof" like me--I think it's an inherited Southernism, like "crick" for creek. But I might just be making that up!

And the funny thing is, I use both. I'd say, My rewf is leaking so I sent somebody up to the ruf to fix it.

glatt 05-28-2010 11:04 AM

rewf

line at the top, who needs one in the middle? I'm not a German. they put the line in there to differentiate it from their 1s, which they write like a capital A without the cross slash in the middle.

dmg1969 05-28-2010 11:27 AM

I pronounce it "rewf"...like aloof.

And I prefer my sevens without lines...much like my z's.

Cloud 05-28-2010 11:56 AM

rhymes with "toof" UT? nooooooo! rhymes with "woof"!

Undertoad 05-28-2010 12:06 PM

talking dog and man go into bar. "This dog can talk. If you give me a free beer, I'll make him talk."
"OK, let's hear him talk." says the bartender.

"What's the texture of sandpaper feel like?"
"Ruff, ruff."
"What's on the top of this building?"
"Roof, roof."
"Who was the greatest baseball player of all time?
"Ruth, ruth."
The bartender pulls a sap from behind the bar and chases them out.
As the man and dog are running down the block, the dog looks up,panting and asks
"D' ya think I shoulda said Dimaggio?"

Clodfobble 05-28-2010 01:21 PM

I say rewf, but there are lots of others around here who say roeuf. It's a Southern accent thing. I betcha BusterB says "roeuf."

And I always cross my sevens. But I'm surprised at the number of other people here who say they do, because I've never run across anyone else in person who does it, except for the random person I decided to copy when I was in third grade.

wolf 05-28-2010 01:34 PM

long "oo" roof, used to cross 7s, then decided it was pretentious. Do cross Zeros to properly differentiate from Ohs, although not consistently.

lafs. I brought these items up with my cow orkers at lunch. They just shook their heads in bemusement and made half-admiring and half-disparaging remarks about my internal monologue.

:p:

Tulip 05-28-2010 09:28 PM

rewf
I sometimes cross my 7's and sometimes I don't. Habit I picked up from all those french classes. In one of my classes in college, I had to demonstrate this particular teaching method (forgot the founder's name). This classmate commented that I did it wrong because it looked like Vietnamese learning style. She noticed that I crossed my 7's. Duh....I started school in the states, don't even know how schools are taught in Vietnam.

I occasionally put a diagonal slash in zeros too. :p:

monster 05-28-2010 09:35 PM

British monster: r-ew-f
Michigandan monster: ruff

Line.

monster 05-28-2010 09:37 PM

Southern thing? Everyone around here says "ruff" and you can't get much northerer

monster 05-28-2010 09:41 PM

The crossed sevens thing is weird in the US (and in Britain a little) because ones are usually a simple vertical line, but in mainland Europe is common for the 1 to be written with a "roof/rewf/ruff" but no base so it can look like a 7, so the 7 is crossed to differentiate.

Cloud 05-28-2010 09:49 PM

well, not sure. the "ruff" spelling to me seems to rhyme with "rough" and does not equate to what I'm saying. But I suspect there are more regional variations than we might think

monster 05-28-2010 10:59 PM

wolf 05-29-2010 12:29 AM

I slash my Z's. Realized this because I did it tonight, especially since the Z followed a 2 in an authorization number from an insurance company. I usually write everything else in an extraordinarily sloppy cursive, so I don't think about it.

Clodfobble 05-29-2010 01:46 AM

Oh yeah, I didn't mention, but I slash my Zs too.

Cloud 05-29-2010 08:31 AM

big or small Z?

That's how I sometimes write my 1's too, and that's why I sometimes crosses my 7's.

Clodfobble 05-29-2010 10:46 PM

Zorro: You recognize that famous sign?
Old Man: Si senior. It is a Two.
Zorro: That is a Z!
Old Man: But in the school, that is how they teach my granddaughter to draw a Two.
Zorro: *I* say it is a *Z* - For El Zorro!
