Ohno! Love that short track speed skating! The womens' mogul event was cool as well.

Less positive observations: They pretend they're journalists with repeated showings of the luge death, but I have not see coverage of the the anti-olympics protests.

wolf 02-14-2010 10:52 AM

The Opening Ceremony was cool, missed the torch lighting because I had to deal with a nut. Put up with the whole parade of nations and the speeches, missed the good bit.

Was wondering why women (and men) not wearing jingle dresses were dancing in that style, but then I remember that Native or not, they were all Canadian.

FoxNews has coverage of the protests.

Griff 02-14-2010 01:34 PM

mmmm... guns-n-skis

lumberjim 02-14-2010 04:23 PM

Awesome Nordic combined race. We're #2!!!

glatt 02-14-2010 07:28 PM

Aw crap, I missed that? The Nordic skiing and shooting is one of my favorites.

xoxoxoBruce 02-14-2010 07:54 PM

I'm hoping the Canadians do well.

US ice dancers, Tanith Belbin and Ben Agosto, train less than two miles from my house, and had a hell of a time getting to the games because of the snow.

The story that surprised me most was the three athletes from India had no uniforms.

That's biathlon you're thinking of glatt. But that was on too, this afternoon.

xoxoxoBruce 02-14-2010 08:48 PM

Woo Hoo, Canadian beat the Frenchman in Men's Moguls.

Cloud 02-14-2010 09:14 PM

watching the mogul skiiers hurts my knees

lumberjim 02-14-2010 09:48 PM

judged sports are a joke. a really bad nasty hurtful joke.

if I ever met a figure skating judge.....man or woman....I would strike them.

lumberjim 02-14-2010 10:15 PM

nordic combined

xoxoxoBruce 02-14-2010 10:16 PM

Exactly. Anybody who has ever done cross country skiing knows how your heart is freaking pounding out of your chest, and then to stop and quickly relax to focus on taking a shot is incredible. It I tried it, I'd be shooting the cameramen behind me, I'd be so wild.

not to mention the condoms for curlers.

the official condom sponsor of the US Curling Team

Hurry hard!

glatt 02-15-2010 04:57 PM

I'd heard that the Olympic village is a free love fest. All those young, fit, attractive athletes with nothing to do after their competition. Lots of partying and hooking up.

Cloud 02-15-2010 05:01 PM

good for them!

I think most leave after their competition is over though, don't they?

jinx 02-15-2010 06:00 PM

Watching the men's 15K XC while on the treadmill today was awesome!

jinx 02-15-2010 07:37 PM

Will Bode hang on to the bronze? It's a nail biter...

Griff 02-15-2010 07:39 PM

You guys watching on DVR?

jinx 02-15-2010 07:42 PM

No I was distracted by the fetch-obsessed cat.

That was pretty interesting, in fact all five of them are.

Ha! Turbo used to do that when he was younger. My husband could play that game with him the whole time he was watching a Colts game.

you know, I didn't even read past the condoms--but you're right. Very cute little story

xoxoxoBruce 02-16-2010 10:20 AM

It's interesting that the vendor/supplier/sponsor ties, are not always a goal of financial gain... some are emotional.

Cloud 02-16-2010 12:04 PM

yeah, "just for the fun of it" or to honor past ties. That's the kind of employment perk that is good for the soul, as well as good for the company.

The "big" sports get the sodas and sneakers and whatnot, but those curlers, they've got some stones, baby!

Shame on the U.S. loss to Germany today. Quite an exciting match.

Yes, I really did watch it.

skysidhe 02-16-2010 09:12 PM

I wish I had internet on my phone so I could get Olympic feeds.

xoxoxoBruce 02-16-2010 09:28 PM

When did they start marking the downhills with blue?

classicman 02-17-2010 05:28 PM

Quote:

For Franz Klammer's downhill, they still had markings at the edge of the course between the gates. They just weren't painted.

The crosswise markings were absent. but have been used for years on undulating terrain and in poor weather.

I think they painted the full course because they had fog cancellations and possibly prepared the course to be run in the fog. That was a lot more paint than I've seen on any downhill run though Turin was almost as bad.

Griff 02-17-2010 08:58 PM

Lindsey Vonn- "Holy Mother of Fuck, I'm the Olympic Champion."

Anya Pearsons threw one hell of a yard sale but apparently she's okay.

Cloud 02-17-2010 10:13 PM

Lindsey Vonn: I thought she was screaming in agony at the end of her run at first.

Hey! We're up in the medal count from yesterday.

Cloud 02-17-2010 10:23 PM

LOL! I love how the snowboarding athletic "uniforms" are plaid [flannel] and baggy pants

lumberjim 02-17-2010 10:29 PM

I thought they were ghey.

Cloud 02-17-2010 10:40 PM

Snowboarding is not an Olympic Sport. It's just a bunch of slackers smoking up and fooling the whole lot of us.

glatt 02-18-2010 10:53 AM

True! During the half pipe qualifications last night, I saw one of the Americans pull his iPod out of his pocket, fiddle with it, and then start bopping his head around like crazy. I figured he was waiting for his turn to go in the back stage area, but then his coach tapped him on the shoulder, the camera angle changed, and he started his run down the pipe. He had been in the starting gate, playing with his iPod.

lumberjim 02-18-2010 11:28 AM

I know for a fact that I kick 15% more ass at Tony Hawk Skateboard video games when this song is on:

mental training is just as important as physical training in athletes, I hear. I'm sure this was part of pysching himself up for his run. Just because they do it differently, doesn't invalidate the method.

Obviously. My point was it's not a method I've seen used in any of the other winter games. Snow boarders are more casual.

Cloud 02-18-2010 12:03 PM

I thought your point was that he was goofing off beforehand. Okay then.

and . . . boy, curling is boring to watch. and they're all so serious!

lumberjim 02-18-2010 12:22 PM

Cloud 02-18-2010 12:34 PM

Olympic sock races!

Undertoad 02-18-2010 12:35 PM

A old friend of mine who is Canuck-raised, says that the brushing is just superstition and can't possibly have any effect.

Cloud 02-18-2010 12:38 PM

it's hard what to imagine just exactly what it does. move the air currents? make the ice smoother? give the "athletes" something to do?

lumberjim 02-18-2010 12:44 PM

read the part under Sweeping

Happy Monkey 02-18-2010 12:55 PM

I don't know how tough the brooms' bristles are, but I imagine they could scrape up little piles of ice shavings in the path of the stone, or remove any piles remaining from earlier.

Like figure skaters in a way, I believe they time things with the music.

Talking about all this stuff reminds me of the time I went to the ski jump in Innsbruck. Bergisel ski jump in Innsbruck is open year round for training. You don't need snow to use it. They have a slippery plastic on the jump itself, and the landing area is covered in a very long stranded astroturf style carpet. Every once in a while, sprinklers turn on and wet it down, just like the produce section of the grocery store. Speaking of food, there's a cafe at the top with spectacular views of the valley and of the jump itself. You can see the athletes up close as they go through their training runs.

glatt 02-18-2010 01:38 PM

There's a little elevator/train car that takes you to the top, and the public rides the same elevator as the athletes. Kind of neat. It's probably limited access during actual competitions. Then outside the cafe there's a little observation platform where you can watch the guys getting ready to jump.

A running joke at this place is the grave yard just beyond the landing area. If you land wrong, they say you will end up in the graveyard. But it's actually about half a kilometer away.
