Have you filed your income tax return yet?

I heard I'd have 11 minutes of bad luck if I don't do a poll.

So tell me, have you done your taxes yet?

Pete Zicato 02-04-2010 10:26 AM

I haven't yet, but I need to do it PDQ so I can submit Z_let #1's fafsa.

Pie 02-04-2010 10:38 AM

We've got ours ready to go, but we're still waiting for the 1098 from our old house in Jersey.

limey 02-04-2010 10:52 AM

I voted yes, but our deadline is 31st January, midnight. I filed it with 5 hours to spare!

glatt 02-04-2010 10:55 AM

Excellent, Limey. Even if you were last minute by your country's standards, at least you are done and don't have to think about it now.

Cloud 02-04-2010 12:59 PM

don't have all my paperwork yet.

They're supposed to get everything to you by Jan 31st.

Cloud 02-04-2010 01:31 PM

who is? everyone? it's the oil and gas royalty stuff that tends to trickle in . . .

Pete Zicato 02-04-2010 02:09 PM

I think so. I know W-2s are due by then.

Cloud 02-04-2010 02:29 PM

got that one

Yah, they had sent it to our previous address (the one we sold!) and our mail-forwarding had expired. I called 'em and got a new one sent to our current address. We should have it in a week or so.

dalej8 02-04-2010 03:20 PM

Done mine online - hope i sent it to the right place!

Juniper 02-04-2010 03:28 PM

I always did it right away when I was getting money back. The last couple years I've had to PAY (ugh) so I will take my time!

Sheldonrs 02-04-2010 04:00 PM

Did mine on line 2 weeks ago and got my refund 1 week later. :-)

Griff 02-04-2010 04:22 PM

I'm pretty sure we don't have to pay taxes anymore.

Cloud 02-04-2010 04:56 PM

too poor, eh?

Clodfobble 02-04-2010 05:01 PM

That January 31st deadline is bogus. Obviously they never enforce it, because no one adheres to it. We're still missing at least half our forms, and I know from previous years' experience they'll continue to trickle in until the end of February.

Griff 02-04-2010 05:29 PM

Nah, the national debt is so big and they just give the money to AIG or some warlord so I figure they don't really expect us to pay any more, you know, in the interest of fairness.

Midnight January 31st.
Most employees in the UK pay tax PAYE - Pay As You Earn. This means that the money is taken from your wages before it even reaches your bank.

However there are obviously many, many self-employed people who still have to file tax returns. Paper returns have a deadline in October I think. Online it's January. Not only is it advertised on TV and in the papers, but for years I lived with people in the arts and entertainment industry, and they all paid their own taxes. It was a nice smug feeling to know I didn't have to panic when the dates rolled round :)

jujuwwhite 02-05-2010 04:51 AM

Filed already, got the state bank and spent it on parent's well. Waiting on the Federal and it will go towards Capn's new smile. It's ok though, they take care of me all year long and tax season is my turn to give back.

Scriveyn 02-05-2010 04:52 AM

Taxes are deducted from the earnings (except independent workers). Then we have to do a decalaration for any extra income and deductible expenses. Deadline is end of May, but you can easily have it postponed as they can't process it anyway. Takes about 6-9 months until they get down to it.

It would be so much more efficient if you directly gave it to your favourite warmonger or tax-guzzling multi-national.

How does that work? Do you have to send anything, like your W-2?

I do mine electronically and it gets direct deposited so it speeds up the process drastically! I don't ever have to send anything in as long as the figures are correct.

Employers can issue electronic W2s and file them directly.
