Which magazines do you subscribe to?
In real paper and/or online?
In paper, we get New Scientist and Lego Brickmaster, and also The Beano via grandma in the UK. Also USA Hockey magazine and Splash -the USA Swimming magazine- both of which come with the kids' memberships to those organizations. Online we get access to New Scientist that is a paid service for those who don't get the paper version. i don't really use that, though, not sure if beest does... |
The economist and Discovery, but I've about had it with Discovery. I love the economist though.
|
Make is the only one I get.
I used to get some wood working ones, but have canceled those because they just regurgitate the same stuff after a while. |
Economist
The Atlantic Soundings Outdoor Life Field and Stream National Geographic Southern Living Motorcycle Consumer News American Rifleman And I get 3 or 4 others that are part of membership in various organizations and except for Boat US I trash them mostly. |
I love magazines, but have mostly replaced subscriptions with online viewing.
Consumer Reports--online subscription, as previously mentioned. Wired--I get this, but don't think I actually paid for it--came as a freebie. Ornament--a beautiful magazine on artisan jewelry and wearables which isn't duplicated on the Web. Pain Magazine--a body modification industry rag The Point--the Association of Professional Piercers publication, which comes with my membership (also available online in .pdf version) |
Wired (freebie from amazon.com; due to expire soon, won't be renewing)
Newsmax Whistleblower America's First Freedom Leben Better Homes and Gardens (momwolf's subscription) |
I don't subscribe to any mags at all. I regularly read the Vortex magazine (the Big Finish magazine: since they started putting onto their site as a freebie).
Years ago (early 90s) I used to subscribe to Focus, the BBC produced science and technology magazine. I loved it. Got it delivered and everything. Then rather bizarrely, they changed their strapline from 'leading science and technology' to 'the leading men's interest magazine'. It has since changed back but it kept that 'men's interest magazine' strapline for a little while. I was furious. I cancelled my sub. I buy it now and again, because it's a good magazine. But I boycotted for about a year. It so pissed me off that 'science and technology' was being sold as 'men's interest'. Mostly I buy magazines as and when something appeals to me. I used to buy PCGamer and PCZone pretty regularly. The babe on front of PCGamer did used to annoy me (usually sporting a white scientist coat, a sciency-looking clipboard and pneumatic breasts), but I forgave them as the gamerz they were. Can't change the world overnight. But from Focus I expected better. [eta] a recent cellar post hooked me back into PvPOnline. Way back in the mists of time, I used to occasionally dip into it. I was a UO gamer and had rather enjoyed the UO stuff Scott Kurtz had done (Tales from the Tavern or something, and another one I can't recall). So, having read the recent stuff, I decided to go back to its start: 1998. Wow. I am completely hooked. I am reading them in order. It's like a trip down memory lane, all that late 90s and early naughties zeitgeist. Stuff I'd totally forgotten about: like the y2k bug, and the launch of Baulder's gate 2, the Sega dreamcast and Garriott (Lord British) leaving Origin. The beginnings of Everquest and Prince changing his name to a symbol. People having LAN parties and getting excited about a 486 with a brand spanking new Voodoo card. StarWars episode one and Attack of the Clones. It's all there. So anyhoo, I am now at June 2001. I am completely hooked on it. God help me, I found a new obsession and it comes with a back catalogue. Eek. |
In print:
Uh.... wired freebie... And... That's it. Online: Sciam, New Scientist, The Economist, NYTimes, CSMonitor, Businessweek. |
Only subscription right now is Esquire.

I have Better Homes and Gardens but it doesn't help me with either. Their online magazine is better.
I usually get Time,Newsweek or US News & World Report. Mother Jones catches my eye once in a while but I haven't bought and issue yet. I also think the NY Times would be a good one except it is so expensive. |
I forgot, We're getting SPIN too. It's an accident and we aren't paying for it. I thumb through it to see if I know any of the bands. I usually have heard of one in each issue.
|
Spin's probably good? It HAS to be better than R.S.
|
Reader's Digest
Smithsonian Mrs. dar gets some teacher-type magazines. darlet#2 gets various fashion/glamor magazines. I used to get a number of computer/programming magazines, but they've all folded or are crap now. |
We get food network magazine... my sister got it for us for some reason, fundraiser maybe. My grandmother gets the kids Nat Geo for kids, Click, Ask, and Highlights.
|
Forgot one.
I also get National Wildlife, or whatever the magazine that comes with a membership to the National Wildlife Federation is called. I joined for the "adventurers bag" (a khaki map-case type bag that has a little mesh holder for a water bottle on the side). They also keep me in address labels. And holiday cards. And lovely recycled gift-wrap. I assume they have to be losing money on me somewhere in there. |
My H has gotten Playboy for 10 years we have never paid for it. I am so predictable but I only get an online magazine called thedogpress.com Mostly because I write articles for them.
|
I am really quite surprised at the number of subscriptions here.
Mr. Clod gets Fine Woodworking, and that's it. We get nothing else in print, and nothing online. For a long time I was being sent Game Developer magazine for free, but they eventually stopped a couple years ago. |
Hey there Morgan:) Welcome to the Cellar!
|
I don't subscribe to magazines anymore. The only subscriptions I've ever paid for were for Time, National Geographic, Wired, and Maxim.
I get a whole ton of computer industry magazines, but I get those for free. |

In light of my earlier comments this made me laugh: May 2002 PVPOnline.
|
I just get C&E.
|
We also get an annual free publication from the IRS..... it's a sort of math puzzle thing.... and you send it in and sometimes you get a cash prize, but other times they want $$ for their so-called "free" magazine

My mom paid for something like 3 years in advance of Family Circle and Woman's Day, so I'm getting the rest of her subscription. Just didn't seem worth the effort of canceling it, and it's a reminder of my mom.
I find most women's magazines kind of dull - feature articles are like "duh . . . most sensible people already know that," you know? And they're recycled fluff, what the industry calls "evergreen" articles because they're always in demand. That's one reason why I quit writing freelance feature articles; it felt disingenuous because the only type of articles I was really qualified to write based on life experience were in magazines I didn't want to read! Well, that and the fact they're really rude to writers and don't pay shit. I get Time and Reader's Digest on the Kindle. Also get Writer's Digest in print. WD went downhill for a while catering to amateur fluff, but has improved a lot recently. My son gets the Lego magazine, Boy's Life, and USA Wrestling. Daughter doesn't want anything regular but sometimes gets some teen girl type mags from the school library. Husband doesn't read. :) There are lots of mags I'd get if I had more time to read them. The New Yorker is one, also I really dig Mental Floss. |
The Atlantic
The New Yorker TriQuarterly Scientific American The Army Times |

Chemical and Engineering News |
I get Time magazine, but I didn't subscribe it. My uncle subscribes it and gives me the magazine after his wife finishes reading them. Well, that's how it started in the beginning. Now, he just gives me the magazine when it arrives. His wife once asked me, "Do you understand reading that?" :p
|
Now that the 2 years subscription to Good Housekeeping (yes, those of you who have seen my house may laugh at this point!) is about to expire I was just reviewing this question. No, I don't want to renew, and I don't want another magazine, either.
Online I "subscribe" to Knitty and a couple of similar titles ... |
