Is Black Forest Cake/Gateau...
....a cake that screams 1970s? If not, what is? My friend who has decided to make her entire house/life 1970s is coming for lunch on Weds and it's her birthday.....
Red Velvet? Seems like rainbow cake was popular then, too.
I don't think red velvet cake made it to the UK. it seems popular here right now. What is rainbow cake?
Definitely a UK 1970s sophisticated dine-out at a Berni Inn experience!
I've posted before about a restaurant called The Dolphin in Leyton, which was like a perfectly preserved 70's restaurant. I went there with a South African friend, so he didn't get my sheer joy (prawn cocktail! Mattheus Rose! sweet trolley!) but he certainly enjoyed the food.
If you can get patterned carpet, you're well in. If not, make creamed mushrooms with special mushrooms. You'll see patterns everywhere. ETA My 70s menu: Prawn cocktail no need to use English prawns (ie shrimps) but use shredded lettuce and Marie Rose Sauce made from salad cream & ketchup decorated with cayenne pepper OR sliced melon decorated with cayenne pepper Ideally roast Ideally pork or beef. Yorkshires must always be served. Also acceptable - chicken kiev, steak & kidney pie, chops Please note the above are only acceptable if guests turn up unexpectedly. Roasts should always be available. Sweets As mentioned above. Black Forest Gateau. Offer with cream. Because it's not sweet enough. Sherry Trifle. Should have enough alcohol content to render the guest unfit to drive without recourse to any liquers. Fruit Trifle - tinned fruit where the only identifiable items are grapes and cherries, and neither taste as such. Served with - Matteus Rose, Hock or Blue Nun. |
My memory of the food of the 1970s mostly consists of mixed frozen vegetables. :shudder:
german chocolate cake?
Rainbow cake. There's another kind of rainbow cake, but it's a newcomer.
Ambrosia Salad
Thanks, Dar.
What about german chocolate cake, cloud? sg, that's great but I'm only doing cake 70s style. the rest will be whatever i can throw together from the fridge/freezer in the hour I have after skating class  (Likely to be extrememly loaded baked potatos Brit-style). There are four of us usually. This week it was lentil and barley soup followed by apple crisp. Week before was chicken pizza made on the grill outside followed by Brownies, before that chicken salad (Brit translation: chicken mayo and grapes and some other stuff) and accompaniments followed by cupcakes. |

Also I'd probably barf trying to make it (not that anyone would be able to tell if I stirred it in well enough....) |
Aw shoot, just saying it could be extra...I love the stuff.
with or without monster barf? :p
By rights there should be advocaat.
Oh yes, advocat! That's like a training drink for children.
Or perry if you want something lighter. Babycham, you know (barf! barf!) Or creme de menthe at a push, but you can put that in some cocktails so I guess it's still valid in a noughties drinks cabinet... |
"Mattheus Rose"? Mateus Rose'? Damn, that brings back memories of hot sweaty times. :haha:
The German chocolate,Pineapple upside down and bundt cakes were popular in the 70.s Red food die was banned at that time so we didn't see red velvet cake for awhile.
Black Forest Torte. I think here in the US the black forest didn't really get popular until the 80s? I live so far out west I had not heard of one until then anyway. But if what you mean by style is a theme cake then what about a Watergate cake with cover up frosting? http://www.mom-mom.com/watergate_cake.htm oh and there were dump cakes. YUK |
oooh pineapple upside down cake, that'd work! Does everyone else agree 70s for that? Thanks, sky.
Yeah. It does sound like 70s to me.
Looking back, it's hard to remember if the stuff I remember from the 70s was 70s stuff or was just kids' stuff. I was a kid back then, and surrounded by kids' stuff. I remember a funfetti cake which had like little gumballs or something mixed in it. |
y/w monster mmm The thought is making me hungry. I might have to make one of those myself.

My mom always made red velvet cake for my and my brothers' birthdays, because we liked it so much. I should dig up a recipe.
I love pineapple upside-down cake. As far as Black Forest cake goes... it doesn't say 70s to me. It says "I'M A BLACK FOREST CAKE!! GO GET A KNIFE SO YOU CAN STAB ANYBODY WHO TRIES TO INTERRUPT YOU WHILE YOU SNARF ME IN ONE SITTING!!!" |
Ok then i'm going with pineapple upside down-cake. In UK, it had maraschino (?sp) cherries in the middle of each pineapple ring. Here too?

It was the first cake we made in cookery (later Food & Nutrition)
With three children learning at two different schools, Mum was heartily sick of it by the time my bro brought home the last one. |
erm... what would Americans eat with it? nothing? ice cream? cool whip? we always ate it with hot custard.......
coffee
tea or nothing Hot custard sounds good though. |

I like pecans better than those day-glo red cherries, but I want to be authentic....
I dunno which is more authentic, but evidently my mom was not the only one to put pecans on it.

NO nuts in pineapple upside down cake.
It's in Leviticus or something. BTW remember Mon - you didn't bake it if you don't provide a photo. |
that's OK, if I didn't bake it, I don't have to share ;)
You should probably make some tuna casserole, three bean salad, and Waldorf salad too. And mimosas or Manhattans to drink.
or not. Cake is enough. i have cherries, i have pineapple rings......
I hope I am not too late. I want to mention to make the cake the same day you serve it. The cake gets mushy around the pineapple the next day. Pecans won't.
I'm hearing that Merkin and Brit pineapple upside down cake are different. Well tough, she's getting the Brit version  and it's possibly getting made tonight, but the brit version has a syrupy bit round the pineapples, so soggy is not so much of an issue, but thanks, I will keep it in mind.
Can't you just open a few packs of Twinkies?
No. That word has rude connotations. i will never eat a twinkie. NEVER
She's turning 42 and her present finally arrived today -complete set of the Hitchhiker's guide....
When I make pineapple upside down cake, it's basically just a teacake with pineapple rings on the bottom of the cake pan and then brown sugar sprinkled over before the cake batter is poured in.
I've never used cherries before, but now that it's come up, I think i'll do that next time. I love waldorf salad. Yummo! I guess I really am a child of the 70's. |
Don't know about cake but I have a vicious Spangles craving...

bah. here's a pic of the pic......

It looks different from what I grew up with. My Mom used a 13x9 and the top was brown. Like this:
http://www.sprytesplace.com/pineappleupsidedown.jpg But with pecans instead of cherries. |
Thats beautiful Monnie! Love the serving set too!
yeah, well, the syrupy thing (brown sugar/butter) wasn't working so by mutual consent with my friend who arrived early, I gave up on that. which resulted in it sticking to the pan a little and not so brown on top.... but it was yummy. And is now all gone. :) ...I lied, there was a crumb. NOW it's all gone :yum:
I must show you mt "serving set" -it's actually my roast dish and gravy boat I made.... the base of the roast dish is interesting and I don't think I put it in the ceramics thread... or maybe I did?
Pineapple Upside Down cake is my favoritest cake ever.
The best part is the brown sugary pineapply goodness that sticks to the pan! I can do without cherries (my brother says I'm Unamerican if I don't like cherries) or pecans...but the cherries make it prettier. |
Here's a cool looking cake for you to do the next time, Monnie. It's bound to make a great impression.
