Caraïben

If you were to chose a week where would you go and why?

I lean towards St. Martin, for the nude and topless beaches.

I am open to other locations, but need justification.

I know I am not all that popular here but would be interested in honest assessments.

Thanks in advance.

Jamaica, for sentimental reasons (honeymoon location, 11 years ago).

I've only been to St. Thomas and St. John, and of the two, I like St. John. It's relatively unspoiled. St. Thomas has more of a nightlife, if you like that sort of thing.

TheMercenary 07-27-2009 08:47 PM

Thanks.

Any input as to why?

Why would you go there again?

Why was your visit so special that you would do it again?

Nothing personal, just in general.

Went to Negril Jamiaca for our honeymoon. was great but horrible.... it's a lovely area, not overcrowded, lots to do, but we were broke brit studentss and our whiteness at that time of year implied American to the locals. they were pissed off that we didn't tip big.

Clodfobble 07-28-2009 07:13 AM

We did a cruise around the whole area, but to be honest we didn't bother much with shore excursions, we just sat on the boat and ate and relaxed and ate some more. :)

We did go snorkeling in Jamaica, which was awesome, but I deeply regretted letting one of the women on the ship bully me into those stupid hair braids. I held my ground on the idea that cornrows look retarded on white people, but she pushed and pushed until I let her do a French braid just to make her go away. She slathered it with Vaseline that took about 8 intense washings to get out, and only then informed me there was a $20 charge. I was so pissed.

I have heard Jamacia has a huge crime problem and it is generally not safe to leave your All Inclusive without a guide. Anyone?

monster 07-28-2009 11:15 AM

Dunno it was 15 years ago we were there. we met people like that too, clod. But the snorkelling was fantastic.

Pie 07-28-2009 11:32 AM

We were in Port Antonio (waaaay off the beaten track) in 1998 -- definitely a little rougher than the all-inclusives. Didn't feel much worse than any large American city tho. Watch your purse, don't assume everyone is friendly, etc. Basic common sense.

Went back in 2005, stayed at two resorts in Negril. Much more luxurious. We were looking for a lazy vacation, so we didn't venture much off the property, except for a few walks along the shore. The most sinister thing that happened was someone approached us and asked if we wanted to buy some weed. We said no thanks, and that was that.

It's all hot and beachy.

Wouldn't go.

Sheldonrs 07-28-2009 12:50 PM

I would not feel comfortable going to Jamaica. They treat homosexuals like punching bags according to my Ex and some other friends that have been there.

casimendocina 07-28-2009 01:04 PM

Not everyone's cup of tea and definitely not your usual beachy resort type holiday, but if I had a week and an unlimited budget to go somewhere new, I'd choose Cuba. I've heard mixed reports about how much of 'the real Cuba' you get to see (apparently, non-Cubans get shunted off to the resorts) and the vibe and attitudes, but would still like to experience it for myself.

I really hope the Dems change that policy on Cuba and open it up for free travel and trade.

Sundae 07-28-2009 02:05 PM

I'd go back to Cuba like a shot.
I know that's not an option for you, but it's gorgeous.

Yup. (1) Who cares if they are commies or not, now that the cold war is over.
(2) If you dowant to overthrow communism in Cuba, don't isolate them and give them all the material to whip up paranoid xenophobia. Trade with them, share a little wealth, let them see what they are missing and could have. Don't coerce them, just corrupt them. Much easier and more efffective, with fewer deaths.

And think of all those old cool cars they have kept running for the last 60 years.

One week?
Scotland. Hate sand. Love Hills of Heather, good ale, and cloudy weather. Nuff said.

Might be playing devil's advocate here, but aside from the obvious hostilities created, am inclined to ask 'why does it not matter now, but it did when the Cold War was in progress'?
