Did you know...

...that the Northern Hairy Nosed Wombat is more endangered than the Sumatran Tiger or the Giant Panda?

I didn't.

That's what I learned today. (among other things)

Do you have a 'did you know?'

NoBoxes 07-03-2009 03:22 AM

... that starting this thread with something learned today sounds a lot like the What I Learned Today thread.

Aliantha 07-03-2009 04:01 AM

Yeah...I thought of that after I'd written most of it, but then I thought I'd leave it here because the fact that I learned it today is incidental to the point of the thread. :)

Shawnee123 07-03-2009 10:57 AM

Oh, I have one. (Well, it was a couple days ago...but it'll count.)

Microsoft Excel has a row limit. Up in the range of 65000, I think. I was combining spreadsheets and it ran out of room! Easy to rectify, I just sorted and deleted extraneous accounts before I added more, but in my weird brain I thought Excel would go on infinitely.

I felt like I had found the end of the universe!

Did you know that you can break plastic bottles? Yes, my mom dropped and broke the Heinz relish plastic bottle. I thought the purpose behind plastic bottles so that it won't break. :eyebrow:

The latest version doesn't have that limit. It goes to over a million now.

ZenGum 07-03-2009 09:58 PM

Therefore, the universe is expanding.

toranokaze 07-03-2009 10:53 PM

Somethings no matter how hard you try, it just isn't enough

Ahhh, yes...I'm due for an upgrade to my Commodore 64 at work, and will be getting Office 07. Never considered it might be an 03 limitation.

Did you know that Mary Queen of Scots spoke with a French accent all her life?
It's worth knowing if you ever intend to impersonate her.

It also shows Lord Blackadder was a poor impressionist.
(although his impression was an anachronism to begin with of course - something pedants like me noted)

ZenGum 07-06-2009 08:27 AM

Did you know ...

... the sum of two complex conjugates is real?

Pie, that was for you.

Isn't that the definition of "complex conjugate"? :)

Did you know that LabView is for pussies who can't code?

Aliantha 07-08-2009 06:34 PM

Did you know that the world record for eat hotdogs is 68 in 10 minutes?

I'm still wondering how anyone can fit that many in their guts at one time.

Of course; I was just trying to talk dirty to you. ;)

Did you know

that these #@!*% things that represent profanity in comic strips are referred to as 'grawlixes'? Well, they are.

Did you know

that Mort Walker, the creator of "Beetle Bailey", and "Hi & Lois", wrote a book called "The Lexicon of Comicana" to address his made-up terms for representational graphics in comic strips? Things like 'grawlixes', and 'plewds' - the flying sweat droplets that indicate someone is working hard, or stressed out.

Did you know

that Mort Walker is still alive, and, at 91, still supervises daily work at his studio?

Did you know

that "Beetle Bailey" has been in the Army for 65 years? Still a private.

Did you know

that Mort Walker volunteered for the US Navy at the outbreak of WWII? He tried out for the Amphibious Scouts (you may have heard of them by their later name: Navy SEALs), but was disqualified from the program because his penis was too big to allow him to maneuver in close quarters.

Yeah, I learned a thing or two this morning about Old Big Dick Mort.

*Citation Needed.

Of course, now that it's on the Cellar, we can cite to it.

Tell it to Wikipedia.

glatt 05-11-2015 09:25 AM

That's what I'm talking about. Anybody can edit wikipedia, and a statement like that one would normally be followed by a citation on wikipedia if it was true. Apparently Mort Walker isn't a topic that gets close scrutiny, and so an unsupported claim like this one can be up there for a while before it gets corrected.

Gravdigr 05-11-2015 09:30 AM

Did you know

that Mort Walker invented a device for prevention of misdirection of urinary flow? The patent mentions Hypospadias(<--prolly NSFW wikilink), so, something must have been going on down there...

I understand that. I'm just telling you that's where I got my info.

Gravdigr 05-11-2015 09:34 AM

Ya gotta admit, though, "I couldn't be a Navy SEAL cuz my dick is too big." is an attention getter.

BigV 05-11-2015 09:41 AM

Your link was an attention getter. Dickbait, if you will.

So I was curious about that entry in wikipedia on his early life. The only citation for everything there is (p.35 Anderson, Captain John D. & Walker, Mort Mort Walker: Conversations Univ. Press of Mississippi, 28/01/2005)

But that page as found in Google Books, contains absolutely none of that information.

Attachment 51477

I'm not somebody who has gotten into the whole maintaining Wikipedia articles thing, but that whole paragraph should be deleted since the citation bears no resemblance to what's on the cited page, although when you read the whole chapter that citation is from, it touches on a few of the things in that paragraph. But nothing about Mort's manhood.

Lamplighter 05-11-2015 10:44 AM

Grav always has at least one good amusement each day.
I don't know where he gets them, but if Wikipedia is his source, all the better.

:D

glatt 05-11-2015 10:57 AM

Yeah. He does.

Looks like I got this outta the way early.

After a quick perusal of the book at the link in Glatt's post, all this amusement can be killed with these two quotes:

Attachment 51478

Attachment 51479

He didn't volunteer, for the Navy or the Army, he was drafted...There are no privates in the Navy (snicker).

So, there ya go.

Apparently not.

Ah, well.

Maybe the truth is not out there, after all. Trust no one.

Undertoad 05-11-2015 11:35 AM

I have fixed the Wikipedia page.

xoxoxoBruce 05-11-2015 11:37 AM

Party pooper. :p:

Undertoad 05-11-2015 11:45 AM

Yeah the edit was made a few months ago by the user "BenStein69".

You figure it's the real Ben Stein?

xoxoxoBruce 05-11-2015 11:49 AM

I'd bet a lot of money there are many people named Ben Stein.
I'd easily be persuaded BenStein69 is not one of them.

So in wikipedia, can a person go look up other edits Ben Stein has made and see if he inserts penis references all over Wikipedia?

Undertoad 05-11-2015 03:01 PM

Oh I think I misinterpreted that... it was the fellow AFTER BenStein69 who added that bit, and that account was deleted, so...

ETA, yeah BenStein69 is a fine Wikipedia'r and has contributed significantly to Wikipedia's understanding of Family Guy.
