June 18, 2009: lightning Strike

From an email, I got these pictures showing the results of a lightning strike on a plane.
There wasn't much information, but from the pictures you can see it's a ASA( Atlantic Southeast Airlines) plane.
ASA is a Delta Connection carrier, flying small Bombardier jets.

I'd hate to be the one doing that pilot's laundry. :yelsick:

nil_orally 06-18-2009 03:09 AM

I see the body of a baby Jesus. They should put this on Ebay.

SPUCK 06-18-2009 05:31 AM

That's what the email fishermen want you to think..:headshake:headshake:headshake:D

It was caused by a circuit breaker failure that burned the entire circuit breaker panel out and melted the wall - while the plane was grounded and being powered by shore power.

Fine. I bet you don't believe in the tooth fairy, either. [/snit]

sweetwater 06-18-2009 09:18 AM

I see a dolphin! No wait, it's a shark! Ummm... errr... no, I've decided that it's Alfred Hitchcock. Is that why they painted "Danger" on the plane?

Welcome, Derek!

Pretty cool photos! I was completely intrigued when i saw this to get some more pictures from it... unfortunately i came across this:

ASA Airlines flight 5533, a Bombardier CRJ-200, experienced a cockpit fire on the ground shortly after external power was applied to the airplane in preparation for flight. The captain and one flight attendant evacuated the airplane via an airstair without injuries. They were the only individuals on the airplane at the time. The fire department extinguished the fire after it had burned an approximate 18 inch hole through the left upper cockpit crown skin. The flight, intended to be conducted as Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Part 121 scheduled service, was to be flown from Tallahassee Regional Airport (TLH), Tallahassee, Florida, to Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL), Atlanta, Georgia.

It happened on Sunday March 1, 2009.

Bummer... would have been a pretty cool lighting strike. Anyone have some marshmellows to roast?

classicman 06-18-2009 09:52 PM

psst - see post #3

My daughter is a pilot for Delta Connections. She flies an Embraer ERJ 145--the "Brazillian Princess". Her plane was struck by lightening once, in flight, leaving a small ding in the airplane. No great damage, but rather stressful! I'm relieved that this happened on the ground with no injuries to people.

Clodfobble 06-19-2009 10:15 PM

Interesting. I've never in my life heard of a female commercial pilot (if for no other reason than a large number of commercial pilots are ex-military.) When did she decide on that as a career path?

xoxoxoBruce 06-20-2009 12:05 AM

There's a lot of female pilots in the military. There are 23 on the Blue Angels team, and Maj. Nicole Malachowski holds a position on the USAF Thunderbirds team. Remember the IOtD of the all female C-17 or C130 crew in Iraq? It would only be natural for these women to move to commercial aviation.

lumberjim 06-20-2009 05:39 AM

You know where a female Pilot sits, right?

Oh sure, there are certainly some. But I think there are fewer female-pilots-to-male-pilots than there are female-military-to-male-military overall, because women still can't go into "combat," and that's a lot of what the planes do. But my cousin's wife flew planes for the Navy, I certainly know it's possible. Then again, she also wanted nothing to do with commercial flying after she got out. :)

not ET.....but there was a cartoon show/movie of some kind that had an alien that was shaped that way. it was glowing green, and making a moaning sound......

dammit....what the hell was that!? it had like....sad eyes, and it's mouth was open in an O shape.....

Trilby 06-20-2009 10:07 AM

that's from the Simpson's episode where Scully and Mulder go to Springfield to see the glowing green "alien" which turns out to be Mr. Burns after his death-cheating treatments every week.

He'd get a vocal chord scraping, drops in his eyes and a shot of morphine, go floating thru the woods saying, "I bring you love,"

remember?

if you go to the Wikipedia page of The Springfield Files (episode name) you'll scroll down and see a pic of the glowing green Mr. Burns...I don't know how to put it up here. Just look and see if it's the one.

yes....clearly my memory is just a mish mash of swirling crap that has become so entangled with itself that I've combined the 3 eyed fish with the ONE eyed fanged aliens.

I blame it on lack o weed

'sokay.

I have two areas of expertise: the Simpson's and Monsters/Witches.
