More Things You Can Make A Piano Do

For those of you who didn't get into part one, here's something for the purists.

This an old jazz ballad, "But Beautiful". It actually incorporates some of the motifs from the first experiment (the grace-note chords). Enjoy!

But Beautiful

smoothmoniker 06-12-2009 12:43 PM

Man, I really wish my mother had let me get piano lessons when I asked for them. Very cool, sm.

Undertoad 06-12-2009 03:04 PM

It really is. Wonderful dissonance in chords, time, dynamics. I admire when you go all staccato on certain notes and passages.

The first one inspired me... to remember that I have no decent recording setup. The second one inspires me... to remember that this is probably a good thing.

this was all recorded on a cheap rig. $400 mic, $300 audio interface, into a laptop. It's my go-anywhere mobile rig.

Clodfobble 06-12-2009 03:11 PM

Heh... even my "nice mic" is cheaper than that. Of course, mine's strictly for recording voice, so the demands on it aren't nearly as great.

smoothmoniker 06-12-2009 03:22 PM

This is the Audio-Technica AT4050, bought used for about $400, and I think it's one of the best mic values you can find. The clarity and depth sound like something you'd here on an AKG 414, or something else in the $1000 range. It's my goto mic for everything from piano to vocals. I really love the versatility.

Thank you, Smooth. Just beautiful. What a great way to start my Saturday morning!

This is outstanding, thanks smooth!

So pretty. Thanks.

It's raining outside on a Sunday afternoon in the fall. You just painted the hallway of your 4th floor apartment in Chicago. There is a park across the street, and you're standing in the doorway of your balcony looking out over the kids playing over there. You're thinking about having a tuna sandwich and maybe some tomato soup for lunch.

Thanks, Griff.

I really have no excuse SM... no $400 mic, but my pre-amp has a direct-in, and has been used for recording that way and sounds very nice.

DanaC 06-15-2009 06:54 PM

I dont know why but I can't access the pages.

Clodfobble 06-15-2009 07:53 PM

They're relatively large mp3 files--right click and Save Target As, see if that helps.

Undertoad 03-09-2017 05:50 PM

sm still has these pieces up and I enjoyed them again.

It's a really high skill Jazz piano playing. But, I want the video version of how to play the song. It would be useful to learn the song by looking the solo playing video.

xoxoxoBruce 03-20-2017 01:49 PM

I thought Jazz was mostly improvisational, and if so you'd need a lot of videos to cover variations.
