Women With Short Hair

Warning: I am going to post something personal and it might get whiny. So stop reading now if personal and whiny offends you. :)

I am 41. This does not bother me, necessarily, so I'm not gonna hide it. But see, I had been growing my hair long because my hubby liked it and I thought it made me look good. Really, my hair is rather on the bushy side and curls exactly the wrong way. Unless it's freshly trimmed, it always looks unkempt and ratty. I'm not very good at styling it, or maybe I just don't like taking much time to do it. So I thought it might be time to chop it off and enjoy a nice simple, elegant short 'do.

I tried all weekend to get hubby to take a good photo of me, he refused. Because he HATES it. This is the best I've got, a somewhat blurry snapshot my daughter took of me and my son:

I like it. It's sort of...well, elfin! I'm short. Maybe I'm not the prettiest little elf, but I like my hair this way. I think I'll get some highlights, maybe just run my fingers through it with some Sun-In. With a little gel, damn it's cute!

Well, he came home on Thurs. after I got it cut and started making comments about how he was now married to a BOY. 'Scuse me? I did not get a breast reduction too. He says he was only teasing but ever since then he's been treating me like I'm leftover meatloaf.

I am pissed off.

I am REALLY pissed off.

Thanks for listening to me vent!

My Mum has a thing about no women past her twenties should have long hair.
She even considers my jaw length bob slightly borderline.
The two times I have had hair extensions (which made me feel like a glamourous shampoo model) she has hated it and damned me with faint praise.

Takes all sorts I spose.

Oh and FTR - I came home in a new pair of glasses that I thought made me look ultra chic and sexy.
My (ex) husband hated them.
To the extent that he actually said they made me look UGLY.
He came round to them in the end, and even liked them.

I think short suits you.
He'll get over it. Men have a problem with change sometimes, being such visual creatures.
My sympathy anyway.

Oooh, your so cute when you're angry.

DanaC 03-30-2009 05:52 AM

Juni, you look bloody marvellous.

Oh what are they like when they don't like sommat? I used to dread showing J a new outfit. Like if I'd decided to just really go for it and be a little outrageous (my usual tendency in clothing) and come back with somethng I really like, that really seems to speak of who I am...he'd hate it. I'd put it on and he'd get 'the face'. It was not good enough that he not like it, he had to hate it and it had to make me look awful!

*smiles*

He just likes what you had. He'll get used to this. At the end of the day it's your hair. You don't just look good for your husband you look good for yourself. He doesn't own your look, and frankly, sulking about it and refusing to take photos is just a little bit childish and selfish.

glatt 03-30-2009 07:35 AM

I like your haircut. Your husband is being a bit of a jerk, but he'll come around.

TheMercenary 03-30-2009 08:19 AM

I think it looks great. Give him time to get use to it.

I hope he didn't marry you for your hair. :D

dar512 03-30-2009 09:26 AM

+1

Looks attractive to me, Juni.

No, but I married him for his hair. He used to have beautiful light-red hair down to his butt. He cut it off in 1997. I suppose he would look pretty silly with it now though!

Thanks everyone for the compliments.

I wanted so bad to get a good photo so I could share it with all my online friends! Whenever I try taking it myself I end up with some weird expression; I always look like I'm in pain or something!

morethanpretty 03-30-2009 10:40 AM

You go Juni! Its your hair and your confidence. He'll probably come around, he just needs time. From what I can tell it looks great, you have plenty of time to get a good pic for us. We'll wait.

lumberjim 03-30-2009 10:41 AM

can i use it in the collage?

Sheldonrs 03-30-2009 10:55 AM

On the bright side, being treated like "left-over meatloaf" isn't so bad so long as someone eats you before you go bad. :D

Pie 03-30-2009 10:58 AM

Left-over meatloaf's especially good in a sandwich.

...What?

Juniper 03-30-2009 11:03 AM

Sure LJ, why not?

Yeah, I thought about that analogy after I'd posted it. I *like* leftover meatloaf. Unfortunately in our house I'm the one that usually eats up all the leftovers. :)

DanaC 03-30-2009 11:04 AM

I reckon, your hubby just thought it was White Boy Day.

It ain't White Boy Day is it?

Undertoad 03-30-2009 11:20 AM

Meatloaf's better the next day.

Most men are extremely driven by visual, and some utterly so, which is why this can be a big shock to the relationship. Your best bet? Go down on him a few times and let him see your new cut doing that. I'm absolutely serious. He'll get a new visual to put into his mental hard drive.

Shawnee123 03-30-2009 11:37 AM

Be sure to bite down hard.

Juniper 03-30-2009 12:11 PM

Maybe he'd feel gay or something.

classicman 03-30-2009 12:27 PM

Maybe thats what he is afraid of - He's turned on by it and it scares him.

(I HAVE NO IDEA) :bolt:

Juniper 03-30-2009 12:54 PM

LOL

Sheldonrs 03-30-2009 12:57 PM

I personally like touching a guys' short hairs. :D

Pie 03-30-2009 12:58 PM

My husband prefers my hair longish, but is smart enough to say "I have no opinion" when I ask him if I should get it cut. :whip:

I've been thinking about going back to a pixie-like cut (like you have, Juni, really cute!) but can't decide if my face is too fat for that. How many chins is too many?

Tulip 03-30-2009 01:11 PM

Juniper: Your hair looks great, and you are pretty too. :) Your husband probably wasn't used to seeing you in short hair and was in a slight shock. But he'll get over it, as everyone said. And you can try what Undertoad suggests. ;)

When you get tired of having short hair and wants to grow it out, you can try straightening it with a very good hair straightener. It'll get the job done but very expensive. You'd need to start saving for it now. ;) That's when you'd want to grow your hair out. In the meantime, enjoy your hairdo. ;)

Tiki 03-30-2009 01:15 PM

I think the short hair is adorable on you!

Some guys have a real attachment to hair length, and sometimes it's good t just indulge them, but if you feel strongly about it you should do what you want to do.

My husband preferred my hair short, but I think I look better with it long, so I started growing it out as soon as he left.

sugarpop 03-30-2009 07:27 PM

I think it's cute. You can play around with it, spike it up sometimes, put some green or purple highlights in it, or dye it pink, like SG. :D Very elfin. Here are some pictures of gorgeous women with short hair. Clearly, it is very feminine. count yourself among them.

Funny how different guys can be Juniper. I happen to be a bit turned on by women with stylish short haircuts. From my own experience, my wife has a hair style not too different from yours and when she comes home from the stylist after a cut the night plays out very well for the both of us! ;)

Crimson Ghost 03-30-2009 09:16 PM

You look fine, Juni.
Some women can go with the short hair.
You happen to be one.
Go with it.

sweetwater 03-31-2009 09:12 AM

It's your head, and if you're happy then he should be happy for you. But perhaps you can sneak a wig into the house and surprise him some night - and get one for him, too! - and just have fun with it. IMO, your hairstyle look.

skysidhe 03-31-2009 10:25 AM

I had a friend visit whom I hadn't seen for a year or so. I had my hair cut in to a a line bob which I think suits me and I always get compliments when I do cut it like that but the first thing he said when he saw me was,'Why do older women always cut their hair short?"

(I've forgiven him but it did sting alittle )

I thought it was trendy but the reality for the other person can be quite totally different so I get your pain juniper. Oh and it IS cute!!

There, now the thought is complete. I have no idea why it did not post before.

Isn't that like "rewarding" him for being kind of a jerk about it?

Maybe he should go down on her and see her be completely sexual in the new do - wouldn't that net the same result?

...just sayin

Undertoad 03-31-2009 06:04 PM

No the idea is for him to get a new visual.

If she got the cut downstairs, that'd be fine, but in this case we need him to look at the head.

He's being a jerk about it, but the time to reform him is long past. It's not "punishment", it's more like a conversation: "hey honey how about seeing things... my way?"

SteveDallas 03-31-2009 09:15 PM

:corn:

FTR I like longer hair, especially in a ponytail or pigtails.

But more than that, I tend to not go around making judgments about how people dress or wear their hair, and that includes people whom I happen to be married to.

zippyt 03-31-2009 09:23 PM

I'm sure most men would prefer it if "conversation" meant "blowjob." :)

Tulip 03-31-2009 11:29 PM

Many men prefer long hair. I see nothing wrong with that, just preference. But if a man loves his wife/gf, he'll learn to accept it in time even if he would happier if she wears her hair longer. :p

Trilby 04-01-2009 03:49 AM

Juni, I've seen you IRL and have a better understanding of how you look; and baby, you look MAHVELOUS in this short 'do! I LOVE IT!

Men usually are just averse to change. Your hair is adorable and you look 20 years younger----maybe that's his gripe! He's jealous! :)
