Let It Snow x 5

Let it snow, let it snow,
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow....!

Snowing in Chelsea RFN. Can see it on the TV (football match)
That's approx 50 miles away - it's coming!

Sadly for us, it might get held up in the Chiltern Hills, which protect Aylesbury Vale, but the amounts forecasted mean we have to get something!

Heavy snow due over the next two days. Mum and I are so excited - we're walking round the house singing Let It Snow and really annoying Dad. Then again, he kept singing It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas all December, until he got it into our heads too.

My camera is on charge, so I will be able to return with lots of pictures for you.
What?
I haven't seen a proper snowfall since childhood!

wolf 02-01-2009 03:45 PM

Since Global Warming has turned out to be Microclimate Cooling, you might get your wish more often.

Yay! Snow!
Of course it's worse in London than here.
It never snows in London, and if it does, it's over and done with in a couple of hours. I move away, what happens? Snow fest!

Never mind - we had some here and are promised more.
Some pics for you.

Our rather busy patio - there are more feeders on the bushes behind me, which the birds have been very grateful for, and I went out to give them water this morning.

Diz is really not sure about what all this is.

In the Alfred Rose Park - only one tobogganist, sadly. I assume it's because we haven't seen snow in 10 years so most parents wouldn't even think of buying one.

Me, your faithful snow correspondant.

Adorable girl!

footfootfoot 02-02-2009 08:04 AM

Do you guys even have snow shovels in Britain? I saw that BigV was using a coal shovel in Seattle.

? We have shovels? More than that I can't say.
This is the heaviest snowfall in 18 years, which probably answers your question :)

coal shovels are good for warmer climes that get more ice/sleet type stuff than snow. A flimsy snow shovel won't touch that.

I've got a grain shovel, which is kind of a cross between a snow shovel and a coal shovel. And two snow shovels.

HungLikeJesus 02-02-2009 09:22 AM

We have three snow shovels in the garage. By the front door we keep another shovel, year round, to make a path to the other shovels.

glatt 02-02-2009 09:27 AM

I'd laugh at your joke, but I have a feeling you are serious.

monster 02-02-2009 10:02 AM

No, they don't have snow shovels. They have no idea that there are special shovels for snow  If I ever go back, I'm taking one as a souvenir. I now have about 6, although I gave a couple to my new neighbors when the first snow came down this season.

monster 02-02-2009 10:04 AM

..we keep a shovel in each car, one on the deck and the rest in the garage. I ain't joking either. I will often stop on the road and shovel my way to the garage if it's snowed while I'm out. garage is attached, so no need to shovel the way over there from inside the house.

In Surrey this morning. :)

Undertoad 02-02-2009 10:13 AM

And we have a shovel for the back yard. Little dogs hate snow and also hate pooping next to the house. So the thoughtful owner digs a 20-foot path to the far trees.

glatt 02-02-2009 10:14 AM

After my wife and I got married, and we were living in an apartment, we didn't own a snow shovel. We lived in an apartment after all. Parked on the street. Why would we need a snow shovel?

We got about 3 feet of snow in a freak storm, and had to resort to a cookie sheet and broiler pan to dig out car out. Would have bought a shovel after that, but they were sold out.

yeah, the one on the deck's to let the cats out.

we should all club together and mail SG a snow shovel

Sundae 02-02-2009 10:36 AM

Much as I would appreciate a Cellar gift, I fear this is the last snow for the next 18 years. I'll probably have moved another 36 times by then and no doubt have lost it :)

More snow due in the next 5 hours, but that's our lot.
If there's a noticeable difference tomorrow I will take some more pics, but as I said we're protected by geography here, so we might already have hit the peak.

DanaC 02-02-2009 11:17 AM

White-out in Northowram today. Had to stay home from uni (awww :P). I took pilau for a walk, with every intention of then going back out with camera...but I was so fucking cold by the time I'd walked Pil I couldn't make myself go back out the door!

Sorry :P

Cloud 02-02-2009 01:12 PM

snow! and cute pic!

I've never owned a shovel in my life. Don't need to shovel snow, or bury anyone. Even when I lived in snow country, I lived in an apt, and they did the walks.

wolf 02-02-2009 01:17 PM

Also live in an apartment, shouldn't need a snow shovel, but have one and an ice chipper, in case Mr. Plow decides that there should be a three foot high pile of ice chunks in back of my car.

The last place I lived I was often trying to dig my car out when the maintenance guys were snow blowing the walks. One of them would usually run the blower near my car doors so I only had a couple of inches to get through. I even had the plow guy dig me out this one time (it was one of those two foot storms). It was actually really cool to watch how he was able to manipulate the plow truck and someone manage not to damage my car.

Clodfobble 02-02-2009 05:04 PM

Even if by some freak accident it did snow a couple feet here, I still wouldn't need a snow shovel, because the city would just shut down by unanimous agreement. Everywhere would be closed and there would be nowhere to go.

But I do remember fondly when I was five years old and it snowed a few inches. All the kids were using their pool floats as sleds. :)

Aliantha 02-02-2009 05:28 PM

I saw all this on the news this morning. It all looks so beautiful, but what a problem for commuters!

DanaC 02-02-2009 05:42 PM

More of a problem for their employers *grins*

Aliantha 02-02-2009 05:45 PM

lol...yeah, I hear it's costing your economy a fair bit in lost production...which is really nothing to lol at I guess.

xoxoxoBruce 02-04-2009 03:20 AM

I just looked out and 1" to 3" my ass, I've got over 6" out there. :(

DanaC 02-04-2009 03:40 AM

Ffs. Phoned the travel info line and was told buses between Halifax and Leeds running normal services. So trudged through sludge to bus stop and stood there for twenty-five minutes with my toes gradually freezing into a block, only, when the bus arrived, for the driver to tell me they're not going as far as leeds today.

Ffs. I have stuff I need to get from the library. I am giving a presentation on Monday and have no fucking books on the subject! It's gonna snow again tonight, or tomorrow they reckon. I can see it being fucking Saturday by the time I can get to a library. There's bugger all available online for my purposes. And I have an overdue book out on inter-library loan....which means if it's very overdue the university could lose its borrowing priveleges at that library.

Oh, and I am currently missing the second lecture of the new module I was so pleased about starting. Grrrr.

On the plus side, the garden looks quite pretty and Pilau's delighted I am back home so soon.

Mad Professor - a beautiful picture. And a beautiful street, I may have to marry you. If you don't marry Sheldon that is.

Tis my Dad's hat I'm afraid. Of the two of us, he is the more image conscious. He bought a hat from River Island just before Christmas because it looked like the one Simon Webb wore on I'm A Celebrity... Mum says it makes him look like a drug dealer. May be some racist overtones there!

I'm rarely be-hatted as I am the Guinnes Wold Record Holder for the hottest person in the world. Or something like that. I just thought it was worth preserving some heat for once in my life. I had to take it off when I got back to my garden. Making my miniature snowman made me hot again!

I can attest to this. My body is total shit at temperature regulation, but in this instance Sundae makes me seem normal :P

meph 02-08-2009 05:21 AM

I've been living where it doesn't snow so much after most of my life in the colder climes. So when it does snow, the locals are utterly unprepared for it and generally shut down the area. They can't drive or walk in it either. But the driving problems are exacerbated by the design of the roads, all concrete with no asphalt, lots of overpasses/bridges which freeze up and little to fight off the worst such as snow plows and salt trucks for the roads. The drivers are too inexperienced to handle driving in bad conditions and that makes it so much worse.

The most recent was an ice storm that was gone by noon. But since the road right in front of my place is 3 lanes each way, I got to watch the folks find out the hard way they can't adjust for the conditions.

I have no idea how they'd handle a minnesota winter but it'd be fun to watch if you're morbid.

DanaC 02-08-2009 05:47 AM

I was listening to a guy on the radio the other day. He was talking about the fact that Britain grinds to a halt very time there's a really heavy snowfall. People had sent in various emails about how pathetic this was, and how in other countries they just get on with it, and also how we used to just get on with it years ago too.

The fellah on the radio pointed out that we only get very, very heavy snow occasionally. This last was the heaviest in several decades. We don't get anywhere near the amount of snow we used to here. Used to get a white out at least once most winters. White outs lasted longer than 24 hours usually.

To have the infrastructure in place, ready to deal with snowy conditions at the drop of a...well snowflake, I suppose, would be very expensive. It's just not cost effective to maintain the systems and staff training that would be necessary to deal with these conditions as efficiently and swiftly as Canada, for instance.

Sundae 02-08-2009 05:52 AM

Yay!
I knew I'd found my home here!

I had to switch off Radio 5 the other morning because people were moaning about Britain "grinding to a halt". I told them all to fuck off. I don't know if they heard me.

I came in here to tell Mum about it, asking whether the Aussies at present were saying, "This is ridiculous, we can't even take a bit of heat! They manage it in the Sudan! Aren't we rubbish?!" in my best Aussie accent.

She laughed anyway.

I love this country.
I love being English.
I love our national identity.
Just sometimes I wish we weren't so flaming negative. Smacks all round.
