Ice storm 1/28/2009
1 Attachment(s)
There's about 1/4" of ice coating the trees -- I've definitely seen worse. And we haven't lost power (yet). But...
My street is an ice rink. They won't plow or salt it because some ass-munch neighbors parked on the street. Kids were ice-sledding on it earlier. So, what does it look like in your neighborhood? |
Before the ice storm hit I took a photo of the corkscrew willow:
Thus: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...crewWillow.jpg This is after the storm: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...wWillowIcy.jpg And a willow overhanging some cattails: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...ndCattails.jpg I have a thing for textures, obviously! |

No ice here, just your regular snow, but I think the plows are on strike and it's too cold to melt, or even get dirty. this is the street this evening -after hundreds of cars have driven up and down it.
|
im glad it doesnt look like that here...its close but no bananas
|
we got 3" of snow, and then 3/4" of ice to top it. the plow put about 2' of plow muck and ice balls all over my sidewalk. it's only 30-35 feet, but i nearly died from it. then the neighbor's old wife was out there shoveling her driveway.....which i sometimes use to park in front of jinx.....so i helped her out a bit too..... I was drenched in sweat by the time jinx rescued me.

... We've been iced over in North Texas; I've been working from home for the last two days. |
South Texas, on the other hand, is still pretty warm. It technically froze last night, but warmed up to light jacket weather again by late afternoon.
|
*scowls* *storms out of thread muttering* *slams door*
*sneaks back in to look at SW's amazing pics again.* |
Lovely pics!
Sweetwater, I really, really like the three pics you posted. They make the breath catch slightly in my throat. |
That corkscrew willow is amazing, sw.
|
I have heard that those are the trees used to make those funky walking sticks, but so far all I've done is gather a few of the fallen twigs and plan to paint them up like little snakes.
|
Great pics, sweetwater.
Pie's street looks like a... a... pie. |
sweetwater, I love your pics.
I wanted to take some pics of the snowy river, but HG's beater car was in the line of sight and I wasn't about to tromp around in snow if I didn't absolutely have to. :o |
I've just made that willow and cattails one my desktop! Thanks SW.

Crybabies!
I had to pilot a semi through it ALL from Oklahoma City to West Memphis. I made it 90 miles the first day, taking 10 hours to do it. I gave up and parked at a small truck stop at exit 231. Got stuck on ice there and waited 24 hrs for a tow truck to come and get me out. Then, I went a whole six miles and gave up again after getting stuck TWICE on ice on the interstate, getting going again only after the truck behind me gave me a shove. That took 4.5 hours. Parked on the street all night and got going the third day and made it to W. Memphis by 6 pm. Sheesh! I would NOT let the student drive in it either! He's from Florida and doesn't know how to drive in snow. Squeals like a girl when the truck slips sideways into another truck, too. He now trusts my driving skilz a lot more than he used to. I took a few pics but you'll have to wait until I find the cable to d/l them. |

Ugg, winter camping. The last time I did it was for survival tng and it was only good because it was instructive. Not something I relish to repeat.
|
HLJ, all trucks in snow-prone areas such as the I70 and I80 corridors over the mountains must carry chains, and use them if the chain law is dropped and they want to go. Most of us refuse to chain up and just park until the roads are passable again.
My company has chain banks just outside of those areas and our drivers must stop there and check out four sets of chains to carry (or else a $750 fine) and return them on the other side. We are not permitted to take the chains out of that region. Should we need them again, say for a trip to Seattle, we must do the check-in and out procedure each time we enter a chain-required area. I do not chain unless I happen to be up there when the chain law drops. |
|
Further proof that nature is just amazing! Excellent pics!
|
Jeanie Mac - he followed it on purpose!
Great link tho, ta. Interesting (to me) points: Spanish on the sign. Nebraska? Blimey. His decision never to include random people in his photos - comes across as an invasion of privacy thing rather than an artistic decision. Okay I'm nowhere near his level of talent - he may exhibit professionally for all I know - but it never occurred to me there was anything wrong in having people in photos. I mean, they're not doing anything wrong. Just walking down the street. Hmmmm. |
If I'm not taking a picture of a person, then the person is in the way of what I'm trying to take the picture of. I spend a lot of time waiting for people to get out of the way.
|
[aging ingenue]Would I be in your way?[/aging ingenue]
|
No, 'cause if you were around, it would be you I was taking pictures of.:yum:
Well, maybe a random artsy shot of your clothing strewn about the room. |
:biggrinlo You always write what a girl wants to read :biggrinlo
|
If'n ya likes my writin', ya oughtta see my pictures... that I haven't taken yet but have planned in my mind, over and over and over and over and over and over...

We had a great time, as you can see. It's much nicer when you bundle up right!
|
ok, back to your thread.
dar, if you return to the upper left hand corner in the winter again, I'd be happy to put together "enjoy pleasant weather" and "winter camping" for you. |
Quote:
en·joy (ěn-joi') Pronunciation Key v. en·joyed, en·joy·ing, en·joys To receive pleasure or satisfaction from. To have the use or benefit of: enjoys good health. To have a pleasurable or satisfactory time. Enjoy oneself To have a pleasurable or satisfactory time. survive /sərˈvaɪv/ Show Spelled Pronunciation [ser-vahyv] verb, -vived, -viv⋅ing. –verb (used without object) 1. to remain alive after the death of someone, the cessation of something, or the occurrence of some event; continue to live. 2. to remain or continue in existence or use. 3. to get along or remain healthy, happy, and unaffected in spite of some occurrence. –verb (used with object) 4. to continue to live or exist after the death, cessation, or occurrence of: His wife survived him. 5. to endure or live through (an affliction, adversity, misery, etc.). They are two different words that infer two different experiences... just saying, ya know. :haha: |
Awwwww, great pics V.
You look like you swallowed the sun. |
Bruce has got it exactly right. You camp in the snow to prove you can survive. You camp in nice weather to enjoy camping.

Thanks for the offer in any case. |
BigV thinks we all don't appreciate how much fun winter camping is.
We all know BigV is nuts. :lol2: |
