Brrrrrr...Its cold!

We've been in the single digits with -15 wind chill for the last day or two. Its so cold that the few window we didnt get around to replacing are frosted over. Its amazing...

Pico and ME 12-22-2008 02:44 PM

The house was built in the 60's and those are the original windows.

Bullitt 12-22-2008 03:18 PM

Nice! er.. Ice! Yeah.
It's been a bit chilly here as well, got down to something like 3 degrees last night, -18 with the wind chill* (10mg salt taken simultaneously). Makes my current lift op job real fun.

glatt 12-22-2008 03:25 PM

I was feeling sorry for myself that it was in the teens this morning in Virginia, and I had to break out my down parka, but it's downright toasty here compared to you guys.

kerosene 12-22-2008 03:28 PM

Last week we had -12 and -14. I was afraid to know what the windchill was.

HungLikeJesus 12-22-2008 03:45 PM

We have a coat rack mounted on the inside of the front door. During that cold spell last week the coats all froze to the door.

Soooo, not looking forward to soccer practice tonight. It's only 70 right now. It could be as low as 60 by then.;)

Madman 12-22-2008 04:24 PM

I hope you got a wood stove! I'd hate to pay your heating bill.

Nirvana< hits Lookout in the back of the head with a snowball ;)

BrianR 12-22-2008 05:42 PM

it was 40 this am in Baton Rouge and windy too. I had to walk a mile to the truck repair place early and then walk back again. Guess no one here believes in courtesy vans.

chilly for this area.

jinx 12-22-2008 08:11 PM

On friday, all the doors on the jeep were frozen shut, but the kids and I managed to break in and head out. But then, when we were leaving the gym that night the lift gate was frozen shut. The boy had squeezed the handle, disengaging the latch, but neither one of us could pry the door open. About half way home I hit a bump and popped it open.

Pico, when I lived in upstate NY our window looked like that throughout most of the winter. The windows in this old house wouldn't survive that I'm afraid...

xoxoxoBruce 12-22-2008 08:44 PM

20 degrees (13 degree wind chill) and here comes a guy on a motorcycle!
He must have wanted to go somewhere, really badly.

HungLikeJesus 12-22-2008 08:57 PM

Yesterday our neighbor stopped by to deliver a gift. He was wearing shorts and a short sleeved shirt. It was 2°F.

I had that happen when the trunk of my old Accord froze shut. I hit a speed bump, it flew open; I groaned an looked for a place to pull over. I went over another speed bump and it magically closed and latched itself. Whee!

Okay, I don't get your funny foreign temperatures, but I know it's pretty damned warm here. I went down to the Spar today in a vest top, with my Mum's fleece over the top. I was on my way to a walk round the park, but halfway I had to take the fleece off. Sleeveless in December! Although I do recognise I am the hottest person I have ever encountered (living down South and all)

All I can say is that the spare room where this computer is, is still the coldest room in the house. Hence coming in here to check the Cellar after my morning shower/ drying my hair - to cool off!). This was my bedroom growing up and we regularly had ice on the inside of these windows. Another 60's house. Although we have double glazing and central heating now it's still the room that gets the least light - only when the sun is setting. Why oh why oh why didn't the estate builders take into account topography and the path of the sun when building houses? The majority of houses on this estate face East/West. And there are so many with vertiginous gardens. Ridiculous. Lazy, lazy brutalist architects.

We hit -6 around KC on Sunday night/Monday AM. Yesterday, every call we got at work was about frozen pipes. Today, at 3:30, Selene called me, frantic. The pipe that runs inside our garage to feed the backyard faucet bib broke. All of our vinyl albums are in a large plastic bin with a lid. A cracked lid.

Just got through a little while ago pulling over 300 albums out of their soggy sleeves. We've saved the music, but the covers are *dead*. All that fucking album art and text...lost.

On the bright side, I now have a definitive reason to buy that USB turntable I've been pondering for the last couple of years.

This is not the effect of global warming.
This is not the effect of climate change.
This is because you Americans just pissed of the Wicked Witch of the North by not voting for her. Freeze, my Pretties!

I'll try. The key is to relax and not move around to much while you sip ice cold beer under the shade of an Old Growth Oak as that naked woman with the big hooters fans you.

I am more worried about the fact that if we don't get a hard freeze the bugs are going to take over the whole city. But in this area the months of Jan and Feb are often much colder than Dec.

300 wow

Does homeowners insurance cover such a thing?

I know it won't bring all those covers back but it may buy your turntable?

wolf 12-24-2008 03:01 AM

32 degrees with freezing rain.

I am stuck at the nuthouse.

Luckily, I have some leftover fried dumplings and an egg roll from ordering Chinese earlier tonight. And an emergency microwaveable ramen noodle thingy.

At least I won't have to resort to eating patient food or drinking generic Ensure.

Not yet, anyway.

Sorry! What a soggy mess. There are very expensive document restoration places that could freeze dry those albums and carefully pull them apart, but I bet you could buy new ones for cheaper, even if they are very rare.

Griff 12-24-2008 08:42 AM

Bummer Spode.

footfootfoot 12-24-2008 02:34 PM

I'll put this here even though it is no longer so cold, it has started to rain. The Glacial Death Star Icicles just let go and came crashing down on the roofs (rooves?) of the bay windows, sounding like the hammers of hell. The fuckers came down in chunks weighing 50 to 75 pounds each.

Last year one of them crushed our steel wheelbarrow. BAM!

I wonder if they took out any shingles on the way down?

wolf 12-25-2008 04:10 PM

Ah, Pennsylvania winters.

Tuesday, sleet and freezing rain trapped me at the nuthouse.

Today, temperatures over 50, and expected to remain so for the next couple of weeks.

TheMercenary 12-25-2008 07:22 PM

It was crazy weather today. What a Christmas. 77 degrees. I should have gone to the beach.

Bullitt 12-26-2008 05:02 AM

Going to be 60 here Saturday.. wow.
