WTF Song Lyrics.
Ok....What in the hell does prince mean?!?
Song: Kiss Lyric: You don't have to watch "Dynasty" to have an attitude. It screws me up every time I happen to hear it. What?!? |
YOu don't have to watch Dynasty to pretend you're rich and beautiful (and neurotic)?
That's my interpretation. |
Well that's implying that Dynasty is watched, just so someone can act like that. That's the wtf part.
Like the same person couldn't have an attitude outside of watching Dynasty. Proper response: Yes, I know I don't have to watch Dynasty to have my attitude, as I've been getting it from your momma. |
What's the "pompetous of love"?
|
It's Steve Miller mis-hearing an earlier lyric by the Medallions... "puppetutes" a word coined by Vernon Green.
In 1954, Vernon Green of the Medallions wrote a song called "The Letter" in which he used the words "puppetutes of love", a combination of "puppets" and "prostitutes". A puppetute was a woman of your fantasies who would do anything you wanted. |
|
"You are so beautiful...to me"
Translated: I don't care if everyone else thinks you're a butt-ugly skank "God is watching us from a distance" Translated: Because he doesn't want to get too close |
"I love you just the way you are"
Translated: if you do change, I'm outta here. |
The whole of Wonderwall by Oasis.
Especially "I don't believe that anybody Feels the way I do, about you now" Apparently it's a love song. But I always heard it as an old geezer singing to an ex-stripper when they were both in their 80s. Everyone adored her in her youth, but he was the only one left who was still overwhelmed. |

Which reminds me
"I love you best, when you say nothing at all" Not jumping on a bandwagon here - the first time I heard that song I disliked it. I commented that it was basically saying, "Shut your trap and just let me look at you woman!" Triple post. Sorry. |

That line always sounded caustic to me. Like someone respected and admired by everyone, screwed up. Alternatively, and ironically, they are the only "one to save him"... after all...."they're his wonderwall" (main admirer). It fits in the context with the rest of the song, I actually get the song though. He is saying someone has disappointed everyone, bet he still digs them. |
you know what I'm pissed off about?
ali explaining the mundane about "pompetous"...totally harshes my mellow. I'll never listen to that song the same again. Though, the song remains the same.... |
My roomie freshman year hated Lionel Ritchie's Stuck on You, citing his non-committal namby pamby use of the word "guess" throughout, like he couldn't be sure.
I'm stuck on you I've got this feeling down deep in my soul that I just can't lose Guess I'm on my way Needed a friend And the way I feel now I guess I'll be with you 'til the end Guess I'm on my way I'm mighty glad you stayed |
I saw a Lion, he was standing alone...with a tadpole in a jar.
-Misty Mountain Hop Led Zeppelin top that |
After nine days I let the horse run free
cause the desert had turned to sea There were plants and birds and rocks and things There was sand and hills and rings The ocean is a desert with its life underground And a perfect disguise above Under the cities lies a heart made of ground But the humans will give no love |
He was trying to sound "casual"(Lionel Richie). Hey, did you notice his accent in that song, like he's almost a hick? Why in that song only is he trying to be country? It's confusing....

I never understood why Prince was makin' love to chili dogs in Erotic City.

I thought he was DEAD!
edit: Cash I mean. Speaking of Beatles: Number 9. Number 9. Number 9. WTF????? |
He's feeling better...

I'm sorry, what were you saying?
My mind was wandering... |
Uh...WHO?
I showed up late one night with a neon light for a Visa But knowing I'm so eager to fight can't make letting me in any easier |
You're way on top now
Since you left me You're always laughin' Way down at me But watch out now I'm gonna get there We'll be together For just a little while And then I'm gonna put you Way down here And you'll start cryin' Ninety-six tears Cry Cry I had a friend who was absolutely convinced that the implication in this song was that he was going to rape her for breaking up with him. |
This is a little tangent here, but how about that commercial for that Lincoln using Space Oddity (Major Tom) as the music? I like this commercial, mainly because of the music. It must be targeted at people like me, if I like it. But did it occur to any of the geniuses who put the commercial together that the song goes on to talk about how Major Tom dies is his rocket?
Ground control to major tom Your circuit's dead, there's something wrong Can you hear me, Major Tom? Do they really want me to have that association in my mind when the commercial is ending? Lincoln, will leave you stranded in isolation to die a slow lonely death. |

Oh I always thought it was grim. Which is why I like it, like most of the "The Stone Roses" stuff. Sounds sweet right? Well. No. It's really not. I love tons of music that sounds sweet but is actually quite nasty if you listen to it. I mean, how dirty is My Bloody Valentine in all their songs? It sounds like a bunch guitars and a sweet girl or guy making a noise. Those guys are dirrrty birds. Dirty!! Some people would never know what they were trying to hum. |

In the spirit of the holidays:
Now this song sounds really nice and sensitive. But the main chorus line, "I don't care how you get here, just get here if you can" bothers me. First of all, you don't care about my method of transport and all the surrounding circumstances, but then you say, just get here (sounds resolved and good right?), and then qualify it with something flippant like: if you can... The song sounds dramatic and full of longing. But I can't handle the apparent lack of care, and then the disclaimer after such a demand. If you took the lyrics out of the dramatic appeal of the song, wouldn't that sound like someone who really doesn't give a flying flip if you are there or not? I don't care how you get here, just do it if you can, mmm'kay? |
I like Brenda Russell singing that song better. She wrote it. I just never cared for Oleta singing it...but maybe because I heard it first on a Brenda Russell album.
Don't know if there's a good youtubey version as I don't have sound. :) |
"Someone left the cake out in the rain
And I don't know if I can take it 'Cause it took so long to bake it And I'll never have that recipe again" - it's only a cake mate. |
Don Henley - The Boys Of Summer
Nobody on the road Nobody on the beach I feel it in the air The summer's out of reach Empty lake, empty streets The sun goes down alone I'm drivin' by your house Though I know you're not at home But I can see you - Your brown skin shinin' in the sun You got your hair combed back and your sunglasses on, baby And I can tell you my love for you will still be strong After the boys of summer have gone I never will forget those nights I wonder if it was a dream Remember how you made me crazy? Remember how I made you scream? Now I don't understand what happened to our love But babe, I'm gonna get you back I'm gonna show you what I'm made of I can see you - Your brown skin shinin' in the sun I see you walkin' real slow and you're smilin' at everyone I can tell you my love for you will still be strong After the boys of summer have gone Out on the road today, I saw a Deadhead sticker on a Cadillac A little voice inside my head said, "don't look back. you can never look back." I thought I knew what love was What did I know? Those days are gone forever I should just let them go but - I can see you - Your brown skin shinin' in the sun You got that top pulled down and that radio on, baby And I can tell you my love for you will still be strong After the boys of summer have gone I can see you - Your brown skin shinin' in the sun You got that hair slicked back and those wayfarers on, baby I can tell you my love for you will still be strong After the boys of summer have gone -------------- Yup, he's a stalker. |
... But now you make me feel so ashamed because I've only got two hands...

Delia's Gone by Johnny Cash Delia, oh, Delia Delia all my life If I hadn't a-shot poor Delia I'd have had her for my wife Delia's gone, one more round, Delia's gone I went up to Memphis And I met Delia there I found her in her parlor And I tied her to her chair Delia's gone, one more round, Delia's gone She was low down and trifling And she was cold and mean Kind of evil make me want To grab my sub machine Delia's gone, one more round, Delia's gone First time I shot her I shot her in the side Hard to watch her suffer But with the second shot she died Delia's gone, one more round, Delia's gone But jailer, oh, jailer Jailer I can't sleep 'Cause all around my bedside I hear the patter of Delia's feet Delia's gone, one more round, Delia's gone So if you woman's devilish You can let her run Or you can bring her down and do her like Delia got done Delia's gone, one more round, Delia's gone Cash had some dark stuff... |
That song apparently referred to the 1900 murder of Delia Green (at 14 years old) by her lover, 15 year old Moses Houston, after she called him a SOB. It's been covered by Pete Seeger and Bob Dylan, among others.

This is probably over the Wtf line and into WTFNSFW territory.
Thing is... The music for this song is absolutely top notch. Excellent guitar riff, powerful drums, great melody, totally catchy... Until you begin to decipher the rather disturbing lyrics. I give you..... Prison Sex, by Tool. Maybe have a listen first. Try not to listen to the words, and don't watch the video It took so long to remember just what happened. I was so young, vestal then, you know it hurt me. But I'm breathing so I guess I'm still alive Even the signs seemed to tell me otherwise. Got my hands down, and my head down, And my eyes closed, my throat's wide open. I do unto others what has been done to me. Do unto others what has been done to you. I'm treading water. I need to sleep a while. My lamb and martyr, you look so precious. Won't you, won't you come a bit closer. Close enough so I can smell you. I need you to feel this. I can't stand to burn too long. Release in sodomy. the one sweet moment I'm whole. I do unto you now what has been to me. I do unto you now, what has been done. You're breathing so I guess you're still alive. Even the signs seem to tell me otherwise. Won't you, won't you come on up closer. Close enough so I can smell you. I need you to feel this. I need this to make me whole. Relief in sodomy. have you witnessed that blood and flesh can be trusted. i. Have you witnessed the blood and, this can't be trusted. i. Only this one holy medium brings me piece of mind. Got your hands bound, and your head down, And your eyes closed, you look so precious now. I have found some kind of temporary sanity in this. Shit, blood, and come on my hands. I've come round full circle. My lamb and martyr, this will be over soon. you look so precious. You look so precious now... |
I've had Tool's 'Undertow' since it came out.
'Prison Sex' is an outstanding tune. The whole album rocks, really. |
I'll see your 'Prison Sex', and raise you a 'Die, Die, Die My Darling' by The Misfits, and more recently, by Metallica.
I prefer the Metallica version: Ah Yeah Die, die, die my darling Don't utter a single word Die, die, die my darling Just shut your pretty eyes I'll be seeing you again Yeah, I'll be seeing you, in hell So don't cry to me oh baby Your future's in an oblong box Don't cry to me oh baby You should have seen it a-coming on Don't cry to me oh baby Had to know it was in your card Don't cry to me oh baby Dead-end soul for a dead-end girl Don't cry to me oh baby And now your life drains on the floor Don't cry to me oh baby Die, die, die my darling Don't utter a single word Die, die, die my darling Just shut your pretty mouth I'll be seeing you again, yeah-yeah I'll be seeing you, in hell Don't cry to me oh baby Your future's in an oblong box Don't cry to me oh baby You should have seen it a-coming on Don't cry to me oh baby Had to know it was in your card Don't cry to me oh baby Dead-end soul for a dead-end girl Don't cry to me oh baby And now your life drains on the floor Don't cry to me oh baby Die, die, die my darling Don't utter a single word Die, die, die my darling Shut your pretty mouth I'll be seeing you again I'll be seeing you, in hell Die-die-die Die-die-die Die-die-die Die ____________________________________ It's a toe-tapper. |
Personally, I prefer the original.
Based on "Die! Die! My Darling!" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0059106 |
