Star Trek

I MUST see this. The only thing I find strange is that this is a prequel to the original series. It's the younger Kirk, Spock, Scottie, etc.

So why does the ship look more advanced and high tech than anything even in the Next Generation series? Where are the blinking L.E.D.s and the lame ass computer voice and the doors that go "shooosh" when you walk through?

I like the guy they chose to be Spock. He's Sylar on Heroes. He really does kind of look like a young Leonard Nemoy but the guy they chose to be Kirk is too pretty. I see he's messing with alien chicks though. Right on Kirk!

Sundae 11-18-2008 07:35 PM

Out of a whole world they only chose Americans to go to Academy.
N'er, mind eh?

Cloud 11-18-2008 08:05 PM

Kirk, too pretty? nope!

What part of America is Scottie from?

I think it would be funny to have some guy there with a thick Steve Irwin type of Australian Accent working the con...

"Incoming vessel Cap'n. Krike she's a beauty!"

Radar 11-19-2008 02:06 PM

The enemy wessels are approaching! I noticed in the trailer they've got the John Cho (The guy who played Harold in the Harold & Kumar movies) playing Sulu.

Leonard Nimoy will also be playing the older version of Spock, I assume in a cameo.

Shawnee123 11-19-2008 02:54 PM

Now we can find out what Spock really says about baby...spocks.

Rock Paper Scissors Lizard Spock

I hope someone saw that the other night because it's funny! Oh wait, here it is:

I don't know, but I'll have to ask Limey where in Scotland he's from, because I've never heard an accent like that before!
(yeah okay, I forgot - I was a Next Gen onwards fan, never thought of the original series.)

A nation sadly overlooked in the Star Trek genre - and I agree it would be super superb. Hang on, wasn't there one in the last (crap) series?

Again, I never thought of Uhura as anything other than American, but I suppose that's because all the cast were foreign to me. I certainly don't remember her saying, "Jambo, Captain!" or eating goat

Sulu is presently in the Australian jungle eating rice and beans. He's a favourite to win I'm a Celeb this year, although the British voting public is notoriously fickle. In fact I'm killing time until the next episode at 21.00.

Sheldonrs 11-19-2008 04:21 PM

cough, cough, NERDS, cough, cough.

ZenGum 11-19-2008 06:54 PM

A Steve Irwin style alien zoologist would be awesome.

"Crikey, captain, watch out for that Betelgeusian Blatterbug. Those antenna are chock full o' deadly poison, they'll leap right up at ya and wipe that nasty stuff all over ya face. You'd be a dead-set drongo to go tanglin' with some fearsome creachya like that... here, let me get a stick and poke it some... "

Thirty seconds later:

"Scotty, this is Kirk. Beam Irwin straight to sickbay. Yes, again."

Shawnee123 11-20-2008 08:54 AM

We must be in the Sirius system.

Radar 11-20-2008 11:47 AM

They should get Hugh Jackman to play the role of the Australian space dude.

Because the effects were so clunky to start with... if they wanted to make stuff look like older technology, as compared to the Christmas tree lights and cardboard boxes of the original series, they'd have Sulu plotting courses on a pocket calculator.

Alas, it's true. A geek was a circus sideshow act. He or she would bite the heads off of live animals for entertainment and shock value.

geek  Slang.
–noun 1. a peculiar or otherwise dislikable person, esp. one who is perceived to be overly intellectual.
2. a computer expert or enthusiast (a term of pride as self-reference, but often considered offensive when used by outsiders.)
3. a carnival performer who performs sensationally morbid or disgusting acts, as biting off the head of a live chicken.

lumberjim 11-20-2008 06:07 PM

i thought it was actually a dove he bit. and not a bat after all.

dar512 11-20-2008 09:19 PM

Article says both. At different times.

Sundae 11-21-2008 06:19 AM

He thought the bat was rubber. It was just dead. I'm sure we've all made that mistake.

DanaC 11-21-2008 06:42 AM

But Sundae, there were non-Merkins on the Enterprise in ST TNG...not least Captain Picard.

I'm delighted at their choice for Spock. I love that actor.

Sundae 11-25-2008 07:35 PM

My bad all round. I was reacting simply to the trailer, and my memory of finding out Deanna Troi naturally has an English accent - like it was some flaw which had to be airbrushed out.

Turns out we get a real Scotty in this film too - good old Obi Wan himself!
Silly for accents to bug me, when I loved Ewan as Alec Guinness and Tennant as an English Doctor.

Why do I hate America?

lumberjim 11-25-2008 08:31 PM

been talking to a certain aussie amerihater?

Sundae 11-25-2008 09:08 PM

Tcha, stop baiting. Typical bloody American war-monger.

I think I must secretly be in love with America. I think I'm in denial. No Cairo jokes plz.

They didn't get Ewan McGregor for Scottie. They got Simon Pegg (the guy from Shawn of the Dead)

Everybody knows that in the future Australia is a vast desert wasteland ruled over by evil warlords who control the scare resources and prance about in chainmail capes and skintight leggings, sporting well-coiffed bleach-blonde hair.

And of course, there is one lone man who opposes them all.

And his wacky friend with the one-man helicopter.

And a feral child.

And a dog.

I seem to be living in a parallel universe these days. To the point I wonder if I'm narcoleptic.

Thank you, Radar. Pegg it is. An Englishman as a Scot. I'm beginning to get why they hate the English :) And yes, I'm going to see it. I sorta was before, honest...

You're all also forgetting that Yvonne Strahovski, the uber babe in Chuck is Australian. In fact she does such a great non-accent in the series that it seems odd when she uses her real speaking voice.

Not only is her character hot and dangerous, but also a nerd lover.:D

Read this hysterical article by Wil Wheaton about WILLIAM FUCKING SHATNER at Suicide Girls.

Part 1: http://suicidegirls.com/news/geek/20562/

Part 2: http://suicidegirls.com/news/geek/20634/

Wil Wheaton is now a famous blogger, and his current blog is:

If you don't know who Wil Wheaton is . . . or Suicide Girls . . . or Star Trek . . . there's no hope for you. You're dead!

Griff 11-26-2008 11:16 AM

C'mon now, Kirk has a point. What is a 16 yo kid doing at the helm?

Cloud 11-26-2008 11:20 AM

driving the boat, obviously! quick reflexes, and all that. Poor Wesley, nobody loved him.

SteveDallas 11-26-2008 12:46 PM

Even Wil Wheaton didn't!

That's precisely why I'm having a problem convincing myself that I want to see this movie. At least the people putting together Star Trek Phase II (used to be Star Trek: New Voyages, has permission from both Paramount and Majel Roddenberry) went to the extra effort to get the look and the FX correct. They also have some of the original screenwriters and ST novel authors contributing scripts, along with regular appearances by actors from the original series.

It occurs to me that I'm probably not the first person to mention this. (EDIT: Actually, I am. Ha.)

Dude111 07-21-2019 01:49 AM

To me the original series is the best! (And 6 movies)

Happy Monkey 07-21-2019 02:34 PM

I've been a Trekkie forever, but I'm not going to subscribe to a streaming service just for Trek... There's too much good stuff available from too many other sources.

But that does look good. Good cast, at least.

Peterdowe 07-23-2019 04:26 PM

I have to agree with that. The original will always be the best.
