Obama's Aunt - Illegal Alien

WASHINGTON -- Barack Obama's aunt, a Kenyan woman who has been quietly living in public housing in Boston, is in the United States illegally after an immigration judge rejected her request for asylum four years ago, The Associated Press has learned.

Zeituni Onyango, 56, referred to as "Aunti Zeituni" in Obama's memoir, was instructed to leave the United States by a U.S. immigration judge who denied her asylum request, a person familiar with the matter told the AP late Friday. This person spoke on condition of anonymity because no one was authorized to discuss Onyango's case.

Information about the deportation case was disclosed and confirmed by two separate sources, one of them a federal law enforcment official. The information they made available is known to officials in the federal government, but the AP could not establish whether anyone at a political level in the Bush administration or in the McCain campaign had been involved in its release.

Onyango's refusal to leave the country would represent an administrative, non-criminal violation of U.S. immigration law, meaning such cases are handled outside the criminal court system. Estimates vary, but many experts believe there are more than 10 million such immigrants in the United States.

The AP could not reach Onyango immediately for comment. No one answered the telephone number listed in her name late Friday. It was unclear why her request for asylum was rejected in 2004.

Great, another 'relative' story. I used to be Billy Carter and Roger Clinton. This year it's Joe McCain and "Aunti Zeituni". Not much of an issue unless either candidate intervened on their behalf.

BTW, GWB didn't have a ne'er do well relative. GWB was the ne'er do well relative.

Obama on Aunti Zeituni: If she's illegal, follow the law.

I agree, deport her ass in the morning.

They can't, until they deport the millions in line in front of her. I know some Nigerians in MA, that were told to go home over 12 years ago... and every couple of years since. But they don't go and the government can't seem to find them, although they can send them letters every couple of years.

elSicomoro 11-02-2008 01:03 AM

Based on what I was reading earlier, the City of Boston isn't allowed to ask about immigration statuses. So unless ICE hauls her away, it's essentially a non-issue.

elSicomoro 11-02-2008 01:06 AM

Correction...from the article I posted earlier:

She said that although Onyango entered the system under federal guidelines in a federal development, she now lives in a state-funded development. State law forbids the authority from even asking Onyango about her immigration status. That means the federal deportation order has no bearing on Onyango's eligibility for the state-funded project where she lives, Agro said.

"We're not convinced that the deportation decision will affect her housing at all right now," she said.

This is apparently the sister of the father that abandoned Obama and his mother?

Fucking Republican bullshit grasping at anything they can. Its embarassing. This couldn't possibly be more pointless.

[thenew]Spode you should find this frightening, but you're apparently too busy hating America.[/tw]

Have you seen Republicans making any hay out of this? I haven't. The only mention of it that I've seen is from reporters, both those reporting the original event, and those reporting process stories about how they think this might or might not effect voters.

I'm prepared to be wrong, and if I am, then shame on the repubs for their stupidity, but I haven't seen this in any of the campaign communication, either speeches or ads. Have you?

Cicero 11-02-2008 08:15 PM

Oh I thought you said an illegal Allen. I was about to be pissed. F'ing Allens. ;)

Actually it is embarassing that anyone would jump out and blame this on some Republickin conspiracy to screw with Obama. It had nothing to do with the repubs. But people have become so rabid in their interpretation of the news they automatically assume the worse and lay blame at the foot of those they oppose. In the end only embarassing themselves.

"The Democrat campaign has implied that the story might have come from Republican sources – “the American people are ... pretty suspicious of things that are dumped in the marketplace 72 hours before a campaign,” said Mr Obama’s chief strategist David Axelrod yesterday.

In fact, the story came from a book that has been read by millions, including just about everyone connected to the Obama campaign.

Dreams From My Father was first published in 1995, and the story of how Mr Obama returned to Kenya in 1988 to trace his roots has become the cornerstone of his political biography. Yet the US media appears to have overlooked the passage indicating that at least one relative of Mr Obama’s had moved to America and might still be there. "

Well of course it's going to be blamed on the Republicans. Just like it was blamed on the Democrats when some kooky lawyer in Maine spilled the beans about George Bush's DWI just before the election in 2000.

But the fact remains that the Republickins had nothing to do with it. It was investigative reporting from the Telegraph.

Sundae 11-03-2008 10:02 AM

Actually, wait, what?
I call shenanigans. All your press are up Obama's arse and are pinko liberal commies... what are they doing reporting this? Could it be that he planted the story himself? Did she send him one too many naff presents for Eid el-Fitr?
