virtual machine

I got a new laptop that runs vista. I'm not diggin it. I heard that you could set up a 'virtual machine' and run xp.

how do you do it, exactly?

anyone ever actually done it?

smoothmoniker 09-01-2008 12:31 AM

yup. Works.

Well, haven't done it on a windows machine, but I've used the VMware stuff before, and it rocks.

My daughter has Vista and HATES it.

Perry Winkle 09-01-2008 11:28 AM

You can always install OS X on your PC.

Undertoad 09-01-2008 11:31 AM

Run Linux and install Windows under a Xen instance. All the kids are doing it these days!

I've been running Vista since Dec. I've had no problems with it, it is easy to work in, mostly point and click. It doesn't seem to be that much different then XP, though I don't use mine for a network. The new GUI is easy enough to get around in for a knuckle head like me.

Griff 09-01-2008 12:42 PM

Vista crashes my machine almost daily.

Now remember, if it was easy to do, everybody would do it.

Corollary: If it was easy to do, you and I would be unemployed. (OK, well, or at least employed in different fields.)

Undertoad 09-01-2008 06:26 PM

I'm totally happy to do this for you for free. The question is, is this what you really want. I mean, I roll Linux on my desktop at work and love it, but that's not to say it's not a hassle sometimes. With a virtual machine you would probably run into some problems still, especially with custom hardware like you get on a laptop.

I'm dying to set up a decent Linux desktop for somebody, if you want that.

lumberjim 09-01-2008 08:56 PM

I don't really know what Linux means, to be honest. i do know that I was v comfortable with windows xp. and this thing is sweating me already. maybe I'll get used to it.....but for having 4G of ram, it really doesn't seem to be that much faster.

Undertoad 09-01-2008 10:19 PM

Sounds like the thing you really need is an XP "upgrade".

lumberjim 09-01-2008 10:23 PM

downgrade? you mean?

Undertoad 09-01-2008 10:45 PM

yes.

Flint 09-02-2008 01:25 PM

Yeah, just take it back and get XP. Unless you're a glutton for punishment.

lumberjim 09-02-2008 03:56 PM

how do you do that, exactly? xp was not offered as an option.

SteveDallas 09-02-2008 05:03 PM

Use your best car dealership negotiating skills to convince them. (Whether you're entitled to the "downgrade" by your M$ license seems to be beyond question. The question is how much Worst Buy is going to help you in doing it & what they will charge for it.
